"Pass this bill"

Wait, you mean politicians play politics with bills before they are passed?!?

Papa G did you know about this because this is new to me.

"No politics, no delays. Pass this bill!"

Denny's shilling for Obama and the Dems and trying to blame the GOP for there being no bill in the House is very funny to me.

Anyhow, I take that as a "no", eh Denny? I'm not talking about amendments, I'm talking about the actual bill that must be passed RIGHT NOW (except it doesn't even exist in the House). The one the President is waving around like Moses with his tablets RIGHT NOW!!

I don't mistake the president's urgency as some lack of a bill he presented. I'm not shilling for the guy, he's promised to focus like a laser beam on jobs a few times before, only to go on vacation the next day.

It looks like his strategy is to look like he actually cares this time and that he's the only one with the sense of urgency. He's doing what W did when he wanted legislation passed- he went on the road and made speeches. Direct appeal to the people.

I think the people are skeptical of the plan and of his agenda, so it's not likely to work out. Yet he is doing what he should do , aside from what he's actually trying to get done.

Personally, I'm skeptical myself. I don't think the bill is going to spur job creation in a meaningful way. It's really expensive, and runs up the debt some more. The urgency on his part is based on the hope that it does help the economy enough by election time to help him. And it gives him a (weak) argument to run against a "do nothing" or "obstructionist" congress. That argument surely to become barfoisms on this site over the coming months.

Still no House bill yet, but meanwhile, some interesting info from the Senate bill. As I said, Obama was trying to rah-rah his base with this crap. Meanwhile, I applaud the reasonable Dems in both the House and Senate for not pushing this flaming turd/political stunt. He fooled a few of the posters on this board though into thinking he was serious though, didn't he?

The entire joint session speech was a joke. This entire "Jobs" bill is a joke. This entire presidency is a joke.

http://www.investors.com/NewsAndAnalysis/Article/585316/201109191846/Dumb-And-Dumber.htm

But when he urged Americans during his weekly Saturday address to read the bill and decide for themselves, we thought we'd give the 155-page bill another try. Our conclusion: It's even worse than we thought. Among the dumber ideas tucked in:

Wage insurance: The bill would let states use unemployment funds to make up the difference between an over-50 worker's previous wage and what he gets paid at his new job. Why not? Isn't it written in the Bill of Rights somewhere that no American shall ever be forced to take a job paying less than his previous one?

Bridge to nowhere: Obama claims his "Bridge to Work" idea will let people on unemployment "participate in temporary work as a way to build their skills," citing the Georgia Works program as an example. But as Reuters reported, only 92 had signed up for that program since February and, according to the person in charge, it's "fraught with problems."

48th federal jobs training program: Obama would also create a $50 million training program for transportation jobs. Does he really think another federal jobs training program on top of the 47 existing failures — costing a combined $18 billion — will make a difference?

Let's share: Borrowing from job-creation machines such as Italy, the bill would let companies cut workers' hours, rather than lay them off, with unemployment insurance making up most of the difference in pay.

Sounds great, except that it would be ripe for abuse. And while more than a dozen states — including California and New York — already have similar "work share" programs, almost no one uses them because of all the fraud-preventing red tape involved.

Given all this dreck, is it any wonder that so few have bothered to take Obama up on his oft-repeated call for citizens to flood lawmakers' offices with demands that they "pass this bill"?

Where is the House bill? Was it introduced today, or were those mean GOPers obstructing the hopper again?

To expand a bit on the matter of Obama's now-nameless bill missing its baptism, the problem is that Obama got it over to the House, where it is constitutionally required to originate, but none of the House Democrats came forward to sponsor it... which is even funnier than saying Obama didn't submit it.

So, Obama did submit the bill to the House, but none of the House Democrats wanted to risk their political lives by touching it, so it just kind of sat neglected in the caucus in-box.

Yeah, I've posted that in this thread more than once. You then said that no Dem would submit it because the GOP would just "table" it. So, thanks for confirming what's already been posted by me and changing your stance.

so obama wants to tax investment income? hah, that's a great way to stimulate the economy.

Well, clearly "PASS THIS BILL" didn't resonate with the public, as almost two weeks later the bill still hasn't been introduced in the House. Also, President Failbama now has added the caveat that any bill that is passed must include tax increases, which makes the House even more relevant.

Time for another joint session of Congress to try a new political stunt? :)

Another day, another opportunity lost to PASS THIS BILL!!!, or to even have someone introduce it to Congress.

I don't mean to trivialize things, though. I'm sure we'll see it introduced into the House any day now...

The president is so focused on jobs he seems to have focused on raising taxes on a handful of millionaires instead.

Come on....1470 isn't a handful! Who cares if it's one one-thousandth of one percent of taxpayers, or if his raise is successful that it will pay off one one-thousandth of one percent of the deficit! Sound bites and class warfare sell!

Edit: I would surmise, though, that there are more than 1470 people who are either a) committing fraud through welfare/food stamps, b) committing fraud with unemployment or c) committing fraud with SS/M/M. Instead of changing laws b/c people have found loopholes, how about enforcing the ones we already have? Instead of inventing new taxes, how about just collecting on the ones we already have? The IRS is stiffed on about 300B a year in unpaid taxes, and we're worried about raising rates for those who DO pay?

For instance (and I'm just spitballing here), collecting the $1B that Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway owes in taxes is 3x the amount you'd get if 1470 millionaires were taxed at the average of 22.75%.

Still not able to PASS THIS BILL!! because there is not a bill to pass in the House.

What's the next campaign gimmick by Obama? This one was obviously a dud, and he wasted a joint session of Congress on it.

He's moved on to class warfare.

No bill for that (taxing the .03% who have private jets), either.

Time for another trivial gimmick?

If this thing is such a slam-dunk way to create jobs, why is Reid putting it on the back-burner?

President Obama still is pressing Congress to pass his jobs stimulus bill immediately, but his own party leaders in the Senate, where Democrats have a majority, have pushed that vote off yet again.

Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, said Monday night that when the Senate returns from a weeklong vacation, the chamber will work instead on a bill that would push to label China a currency manipulator, which would make retaliatory steps in order.

“I don’t think there’s anything more important for a jobs measure than China trade,” Mr. Reid said.

Late Monday, before he closed down the Senate, Mr. Reid locked in an early test vote for when senators return next week.

Mr. Obama two weeks ago sent Congress legislation he said would create jobs by extending and expanding temporary tax cuts and boosting infrastructure spending, which he offset by increasing taxes over the long term.

The president has been traveling the country demanding that Congress act immediately, but even his own party has not been keen to rush the legislation.

Mr. Reid is the Senate sponsor of the measure, but he said there are other priorities.

“We’ll get to that, but let’s get some of these things done that we have to get done first,” he said
.

"Vote on my bill! It hasn't yet been introduced in the House, but vote on it!! This is NOT a political stunt!!"

(CNN) - President Barack Obama is set to blast a top congressional Republican Tuesday for announcing that the GOP-controlled House of Representatives will not bring the administration's $447 billion jobs bill to a vote, calling the decision another setback for an already shaky economy.

Obama strongly criticizes House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, in excerpts of a speech scheduled to be delivered in Texas. The excerpts were released early by the White House.

"I'd like Mr. Cantor to come down here to Dallas and explain what in this jobs bill he doesn't believe in," Obama says in the excerpts. "Does he not believe in rebuilding America's roads and bridges? Does he not believe in tax breaks for small businesses, or efforts to help veterans?"

"Come tell Dallas construction workers why they should be sitting home instead of fixing our bridges and our schools," the president says. "Come tell the small business owners and workers in this community why you'd rather defend tax breaks for millionaires than tax cuts for the middle-class."

"And if you won't do that," he adds, "at least put this jobs bill up for a vote so that the entire country knows exactly where every member of Congress stands."

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/10/04/obama-blasts-cantor-for-denying-vote-on-jobs-bill/

Cantor should sponsor the bill, introduce it, and put it to a vote after holding a press conference noting that no DEM would even introduce this stinker. More Dems would vote against it than GOP members for it.

Obama is so freaking pathetic. I imagine not one member of the media will ask Jay Carney why no DEM has inroduced the bill in the House.

Senate GOP tried to get a vote on the "Pass This Bill!!" bill today, but Harry Reid and the Dems blocked it because there were more important things to do. How anything can be more important than the bill that Obama presented before a joint session of Congress is a bit of a mystery, isn't it?

Senate Democrats forced to block Obama's jobs bill

Senate Republicans tried to make Democrats hold a quick vote on President Obama's jobs-stimulus bill Tuesday, but were blocked by Senate Majority Harry Reid, the Nevada Democrat who is sponsoring Mr. Obama's bill but who said other matters take priority.

Mr. Obama has traveled the country calling for Congress to pass his plan immediately — including most recently Tuesday afternoon in Texas — but the tax increases included in his bill are opposed by Republicans and even many Democrats.

With that in mind, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, tried to force a vote, which presumably would have resulted in a humiliating defeat for the White House.

"I'd like to give him that vote," Mr. McConnell said.

The Senate is currently debating a bill that would push for compensatory tariffs on exports from countries that manipulate their currency — which is designed to punish China.

Mr. Reid said that bill has been waiting for years, and takes precedence over the president's jobs-stimulus. He tried to get an agreement to short-circuit a filibuster and bring up the president's bill later this month, but Mr. McConnell objected that.

"What a charade we have going on here," Mr. Reid fired back, calling Republicans' effort "ridiculous on its face."

Mr. Reid said "a majority of the Senate" supports Mr. Obama's bill, and said the president's repeated calls for immediate action were aimed at Republicans last month, when Congress was fighting over how to add emergency disaster relief to a stopgap spending bill.

"Of course the president was calling for his jobs bill, recognizing that what was going on here … was a waste of time," Mr. Reid said.

But even after the disaster funding situation was resolved, Mr. Obama has continued to pressure Congress.

Meanwhile, the White House has refused to say whether it supports the China bill Mr. Reid has prioritized ahead of the jobs measure.

BUMP

Am I still trivializing things, or is Obama serious about this "Jobs" bill?

The main building at Dinosaur National Monument in Utah was closed permanently in 2006, but reopened yesterday because the Stimulus paid to rebuild it.

It's nice to visit the park, isn't it. Too bad Republicans, even the ones who were for the Stimulus then, say now that they were against it.

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/52677217-78/quarry-dinosaur-center-building.html.csp

But, in 2006, what was known as the Dinosaur Quarry Visitor Center was closed because of structural instability. The building was in danger of collapsing. Iverson said that when the building closed, the Douglass family was devastated and never expected it to open again...

Monument superintendent Mary Risser, who made the decision to close the building, said the park service had tried to get funding to fix the building’s numerous structural problems since the 1990s, but it lost out to funding for other park service projects.

But the plans were done, making the project "shovel ready" when the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 — commonly called the stimulus package — passed Congress. The new visitor center and Quarry Exhibit Hall received $13.1 million in funding, but came in $4 million under budget.

wouldn't give a fuck if I went there or not.

They should just raise admission to make it self-sufficient.

As I show every day on this board, I try to not insult dinosaurs.

Obama is coming across looking like a moron. I am embarrassed for him.

It is embarrassing how incredibly partisan this bafoon is:

Senate Democrats are scrambling to rewrite portions of President Barack Obama's jobs bill, even as Obama tries to blame Republicans for Congress' failure to act.

He wants to go after the "rich", who now, apparently, are families making over $250k, not the billionaires he has been talking about.

To pay for his package of tax breaks, unemployment benefits and new spending on public works projects, Obama has proposed higher taxes on family incomes over $250,000 and on the oil and gas industry.
