...Tex made the same sort of statement awhile back, but didn't keep his word.

...and fwiw, I am totally against abolishing the shift. They've pussified the game enough already...leave the game alone. It is the stubborn assed hitters that need to adjust to the game, not the game adjusting to them.
...and if McCann's and Tex's and Beltran's BA improves this year, and it should, the hitting coach will be given the credit...and he shouldn't...just my 2 cents.

If they're going to load up an entire side of the infield and you don't either bunt or try to slap one the other way for an easy hit it's on you. Then again I'm sure Big Poppy cried about it so they will bend over backwards for him.

It just makes WAY to much sense to take away from a chance at a sure hit. I mean they're literally giving you a freebee, why the hell wouldn't you take advantage of it? So you end up hitting 20 HRs instead of 25 but your BA goes up 10-15 points & your OBP also goes up. And all for the good of the team. Its a win win.

...^^^ if the left side is wide open, take it. Hell, they can simply bunt the ball that way and they don't even have to be a good bunter to do that, just keep it fair and even if they pop the bunt up in that direction there's no one there to catch it.
...plus, as far as helping the team, instead of trying to stubbornly hit through the shift, a "freebie" bunt/slap hit to the empty side not only gives the team an base runner, it also saves them an out which can be huge.

It's not rocket science & yet most players don't get it, go figure.

Now wait a second, agree completely with everything.....except giving credit to the hitting coach.

Look if Tex said he'd hit against it and didn't, then that was a failure of Long to influence him. Mid the new guy can influence him to finally do it, then he deserves credit for getting the commitment from Tex. The rest if the credit blame lies with the player regarding execution.

But coaches deserve credit/blame for communication and influencing skills.

...no way we're ever gonna agree on this, tote. You simply give a lot more credence to hitting coaches than I do. Even Joe Maddon agrees.

...and if Tex, or any other player publicly committed to a certain approach and then reneged on it, it's on the players weak mental fortitude, not the coach. The batting coach works with hitters prior to the game and hitters go through a pre-game BP drill that includes bunting and hitting to the opposite field but once that hitter steps into the batter's box it is up to him to apply those practices to gametime ABs...the hitting coach can't hold a gun to their heads.

...this also does not explain why other teams also have the same problem with stubborn players trying to beat the shift...are their hitting coaches also failures?...if you say no, it contradicts your stance,... if you say yes, it suggests that batting coaches aren't really that necessary at all.

...if Long was fired because he was a "failure" why was he picked up right away by another team?....simple, because you can't fire players.

Good arguments, can't refute the player reneging.

What it comes down to is really simple, as a coach I try to teach my player that to go the other way he needs to bring one leg back a little on the pitch & inside/out the swing. Easy right? Now it will only work if the player actually does it. So what it really all comes down to is once that player steps into the box he either takes my advice or he doesn't. I did my job, now he has to do his.

Yes, yes true. The decision resides at the point of action. And that trumps any influence/coersion the coach may instill.

Again I stand corrected. :lipssealed:

Hey Tom no problem, I know you're not going to believe this & it may even tarnish some of the admiration you have for my vast knowledge on most topics. but sometimes......even I'm wrong.

...if nothing else, I'd like to see some of these guys determine their approach depending on the strike count. I have no problem with them looking for a certain pitch early in the count. But once they are in a 2 strike count, slap the damn ball to the vacated area.

Yanks are going to roll!
By the way, that was a nice cute little shot you got in on the new batting coach.
So, I guess we can include you in the tiny minority of baseball "people" who don't believe a batting coach should never be replaced. lol. Funny.

Are you sure you really understand what you're talking about?

It's like walking down a sidewalk and having one of those damned annoying little chihuahua dogs running back and forth inside his fenced yard barking his head off. Even though you're well aware that they present no threat, they're still annoying as hell.

Lol. What else can you say.....you're the only one here with the exception of maybe your puppet who has implied....or haven't said anything to indicate a batting coach should never be replaced.
And you were the one who chose to belittle and down play any positive help the new batting coach may contribute BEFORE the season has even begun!
Get your nose out Kevin Long's butt. Lmao

When all else fails and you get caught trying to sneak in an ignorant cheap shot...just go with the childish name calling.

I love it.
Now tell us...how does Kevin long's butt smell?

That's not a real dog, those things are what you get when you breed a rat with a snake. Besides the only thing those things are good for is that you never have to walk them, you just hold them out the window & squeeze.

Spring training can't begin soon enough...

Between then and now we get ARod's Mea Culpa, Redux.

I'm going to be curious to hear EXACTLY what it is he'll be apologizing for. you know something like..."I'm sorry for being a dick". and "I'm sorry for being an embarrassment to such a storied franchise". And "If I'm permitted to get my bonus milestone payment I'll be donating 100% of it to worthy causes". Yeah.....that would work. Anything less & he's just blowing smoke up our asses.

He must apologize to the steinbrenner family, and the boss. To mlb, players and fans.....especially kids.

Then he's got to come clean on all his cheating over his entire career.

Still not forgiving the fucker, but this would be a good start.

When I was a kid, 20 years before we had our own German Shepherd (GSD) Kennel.

I was walking with my Cousin and his GSD, thru an alleyway behind his house. He said, this fkn chihuahua, is always trotting down the street pissing on our chain link fence, angering the hell out of my GSD. I said ok, what's up, he said, well the family is not home, and do you hear that fkn chihuahua POS barking, faster than I could say Yep; he opened their back gate let his GSD into the yard for a few minutes, and that POS small dog damn near had a heart attack, when his nemesis was in his own yard face to face. As soon as the GSD had it in his mouth for a snack, the GSD was recalled. Didn't hurt the POS small dog, but he in fact quit pissing on his fence.

Kind of what I see here....!
