...^^^ if the left side is wide open, take it. Hell, they can simply bunt the ball that way and they don't even have to be a good bunter to do that, just keep it fair and even if they pop the bunt up in that direction there's no one there to catch it.
...plus, as far as helping the team, instead of trying to stubbornly hit through the shift, a "freebie" bunt/slap hit to the empty side not only gives the team an base runner, it also saves them an out which can be huge.
...no way we're ever gonna agree on this, tote. You simply give a lot more credence to hitting coaches than I do. Even Joe Maddon agrees.
...and if Tex, or any other player publicly committed to a certain approach and then reneged on it, it's on the players weak mental fortitude, not the coach. The batting coach works with hitters prior to the game and hitters go through a pre-game BP drill that includes bunting and hitting to the opposite field but once that hitter steps into the batter's box it is up to him to apply those practices to gametime ABs...the hitting coach can't hold a gun to their heads.
...this also does not explain why other teams also have the same problem with stubborn players trying to beat the shift...are their hitting coaches also failures?...if you say no, it contradicts your stance,... if you say yes, it suggests that batting coaches aren't really that necessary at all.
...if Long was fired because he was a "failure" why was he picked up right away by another team?....simple, because you can't fire players.
Yes, yes true. The decision resides at the point of action. And that trumps any influence/coersion the coach may instill.
Again I stand corrected.![]()
...Tex made the same sort of statement awhile back, but didn't keep his word.
...and fwiw, I am totally against abolishing the shift. They've pussified the game enough already...leave the game alone. It is the stubborn assed hitters that need to adjust to the game, not the game adjusting to them.
...and if McCann's and Tex's and Beltran's BA improves this year, and it should, the hitting coach will be given the credit...and he shouldn't...just my 2 cents.
It's like walking down a sidewalk and having one of those damned annoying little chihuahua dogs running back and forth inside his fenced yard barking his head off. Even though you're well aware that they present no threat, they're still annoying as hell.
Spring training can't begin soon enough...
I agree Tom, down to 4-5 days now for pitchers & catchers to report.
Between then and now we get ARod's Mea Culpa, Redux.
