I'm not sure where you would get that idea. I have known and worked with this man for years. He is quite possibly the most upstanding individual i have ever met. Seriously this guy is pure as driven snow. There are absolutely no chinks in that armor. He absolutely will not sell out. Works his ass off.

Had a bad experience with him. He turned over on a very important issue. He was written a letter asking why and never responded. Merkley was sent the same letter and responded with sincerity, empathy and tried to offer an explanation why.

Made me gain respect for Merkley and lose it for Wyden.

He could be a great guy and whatever, he just didn't show it in a situation that affected a lot of people I know.

Yep. As I said, Wyden could be a great guy. Sleazeball was probably a bit much. But, on a very important issue a decade or so ago, many people felt Wyden and Merkley rolled over on something. Merkley responded to the inquiry in a classy way. Wyden never did. It happens but it pissed a lot of people off.
