I not sure if prices have gone way up in Canada since then or not but I do know that as recently as 5 or 6 years ago a lot of people who lived in the upper-half of the US would travel to Canada for Lasik because it was so much cheaper. At that time, it was a 3rd of the price roughly to get your eyes done there vs here.

They offered lasik for different kinds of situations that were banned in the US.

The lone exception is Social Security which would have an astounding perpetual surplus if it had been left alone rather than being continually stolen from by politicians to fund a myriad of other programs, expanded to cover non- Americans, and altered to excuse the rich from paying their fair share.

Uh, no.

It was bankrupt in 1983 until they raised taxes to pay t0 keep it afloat. When they talk about it going bankrupt soon, that's AFTER the fund is paid back all that money you say was stolen by politicians.

It is also a ponzi scheme.

Social Security deal of 1983 was a punt

The Holy Grail of politics is a ‘grand bargain’ on Social Security in which both parties agree to a mix of benefit cuts and revenue increases that will stabilize the system for the foreseeable future.

Pundits and politicians point to the negotiations which saved Social Security in 1983 as a model of success to imitate. Obama even invoked the memory of 1983 Reform during the 2012 Presidential Debates.

“Social Security is going to have to be tweaked the way it was by Ronald Reagan and Speaker -- Democratic Speaker Tip O'Neill.”

The story goes that elected leaders put principle over ideology. Bipartisan compromise produced the additional revenue and benefit reductions necessary for the system to not only to survive, but build a $2.7 trillion surplus in the process. It is a wonderful story.

The problem, of course, with this narrative is reality. The 1983 reform of Social Security largely shifted the burden of Social Security from one generation to the next with the consequences falling heavily on late-boomers and those that followed. The Republicans and Democrats came together in a bipartisan effort to kick-the-can.

This legislation wasn’t a hard-choice politically because the consequences were phased-in such that the group most affected were non-voters. The largest tax increases and the maximum benefit cuts targeted people who were 11 and younger at the time. The political calculus behind the bipartisan compromise is simple: 11 year-olds can’t vote.

No this is not commonly known. This is what the supporters of the status quo would have you believe though.

And our sick-care system is great. For those that can afford to have access to it.

This is the problem that single payer detractors simply don't give a shit about. They continuously complain about the cost. While that's a huge problem, it's not the biggest one. Access to care is our biggest problem.

Back when I had my own insurance, I had very good care. If I got sick, I could be at the doctor that same day and home with a Rx in an hour. I have chronic Inner Ear disorders, and my insurance covered a very good and competent Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor who knew me well and was aware of my conditions.

Now I'm on Obamacare, and it fucking SUCKS. I practically have to saw a leg off before a goddamn doctor will see me. And it could take a week.

Referrals to specialists for pre-existing conditions? HA, nope.

In my experience, it hasn't been the "access to care" that's the problem. It's the quality of care you get under the current regime.

Be a lot quicker, and less work, if you used a chainsaw.

Yeah, that would take too long. Better ask Rick Grimes....

Eh....no. I don't trust his technique.

Maybe Tyrion Lannister can help...

......FINE! I'll use a chainsaw!

You go first.

That won't help. Then he'll have to wait even longer to see the doctor.
