Totally disregarding the fact that it's an OBVIOUS cash grab by giving people a ton more options if they pay a sub.

I don't see anything wrong with it being a cash grab. Should people be able to watch HBOMax for free for hours endlessly too?

Twitter has enough problem not sure they will even make it long term or that those type of limits are even in their best interest long term. But I find absolutely nothing wrong with cash grabs - thats the basics of what makes capitalist economies such a great system.

Interesting comparison….. do you create the content on HBO Max? Does any of the subscribers?

Twitter and Facebook and all the other social media platforms make their money off data collection. We ARE the content. That’s why they’re usually free.

Elon is running that business into the ground.

Ah OK well if you trust the richest people on Earth, despite being an avowed Communist I'm not sure what to tell you. Sure, everyone you disagree with are Nazis because the billionaire owned media tells you that. Don't you find it odd that suddenly your ideology is being spewed from the same forces that crushed the left for almost a century, namely the ultra wealthy? I guess not.

For someone who thinks the rich are evil, it's pretty odd that you and the richest guy in the world are on the same team.

Not everyone I disagree with is a Nazi, but I do disagree with every Nazi.
Not every rich person is evil, but some certainly are.
Not every conspiracy theory is utter bullshit... ha ha, just kidding. Definitely they are all utter bullshit.

How many ads does HBOMax make you watch?

-Government censorship is bad.
-Government forcing private parties to allow behavior that party disagrees with on their property is bad.

For example; If you are at a dance (which is open to the public) and you start screaming obscenities and ruining the fun for everybody else they are well within their rights to make you leave.

This has always been the case. This should not change.

If a website or forum is blocking your content you should go someplace else. Simple as that. They should NOT be forced to display or store your content on their servers against their will. That is insane.

If you tweet “women don’t have dicks” and you are banned that’s two acts of free speech happening in chronological order by two private entities. You are not being censored. Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences.

So, your second "act of free speech" was what exactly?
If consequences of saying on public platform, that "the grass is green" are banning the poster, it is censorship.
Good day guys.

why do you think Twitter is public? Twitter is just a big online hotel lobby. Sure there’s a lot of people around, but it’s in a privately owned building, run by a private citizen, the stockholders are private citizens. Nothing about Twitter or a hotel lobby is “public”. If you walk into a hotel lobby and start ranting about how trans women are men or whatever, you might find some people who agree with you but when the concierge throws you out and bans you from returning for disturbing the guests, you’re not going to get very far with a free speech lawsuit.

So, Elon owns this hotel now. What's the problem with that?

You’re the one crying about censorship. I was telling you it isn’t. And like, it’s no picnic for my kind either; we get banned for using the word “cis” because Elon’s ex is dating a trans woman and he’s the world most divorced man. I’m not happy about it but I’m grown up enough to know it isn’t “censorship”.

If you can not use word "cis", this is exactly what censorship is.
I am from postcomunistic country in Europe and was raised during communism, so maybe I'm traumatised:)

I’m from a decaying militarized fascist kleptocratic oligarchy that hasn’t had effective governance in 50 years. My people are oppressed into poverty by the state and the corporations that own them. I am transgender and the government will let me become illegal because the minority party is adding proto-genocidal amendments to fiscal bills that must be passed or my country will go bankrupt. So like, I get you might be seeing censorship from the hyper-capitalist oligarchs running international corporations like their fascist treehouse but unfortunately the legal system has given more rights to corporations than people so we can’t fight the legality of this. Banning me for being trans is (unfortunately for me) perfectly legal freedom speech exercised by a billionaire.

Your transphobic statement about women and dicks was also banned, but a smiley from you isn’t going to magically make me happy about both of our situations being framed as the same.

Yes, sorry for the smiley thing, I do it too much. It was more about my trauma from the past, when people were jailed, tortured and killed for things they said against communists. So, I don't feel your situation now and I guess you could change my view about genders, but I know how censorship works, how it started and where it can go.

Dude we have real censorship to worry about. This toy problem of yours isn’t really important when the actual governments of Texas and Florida are doing actual censorship. Your experience with totalitarian nationalism should be enough to know that Elon Musk acting like a baby is petty bullshit in comparison.

Sorry, I wasn't talking about if it is big problem or small. I was saying, big or small, this IS censorship. Big tree and small tree are both trees. Good day to you, I am off.

It’s small…

…and also not legally censorship.

Elon is running that business into the ground.

When the content is sent to Twitter/Facebook/etc it becomes those platforms content. Those platforms have tons of expenses just like HBO max or other creators. Those platforms can charge whatever they want for people to access their platforms.

Events like the super bowl have insane advertising revenue because so many people can watch the broadcast for free. Other sports have events on pay per view with a fraction of the audience but charge $50-100 per TV. Its those businesses decision what direction to pick - neither is inherently evil or wrong.

Yeah it might be a very stupid business decision to do a lot of these things Musk is doing, but companies should have that freedom to make bad decisions and we vote with our checkbooks to see the ones we like succeed.

I agree to an extent - although when Twitter or Facebook or Youtube or some of these places become so enormous with no competition, they are basically monopolies. If there are no alternatives of a different venue then they might lose some of the discretion smaller private organizations have.

So, Elon owns this hotel now. What's the problem with that?

The lobby is infested with rats, the windows are broken, and there are human feces on the floor.

It's a health hazard, needs to be condemned.

(no, not at all seriously suggesting he be put out of business by the government)

I removed the twitter widget on the right side of the forum page.

The reason why I haven't set up https: is that this forum is very old, the software is very old, and any changes to URLs like https:// vs http:// may affect bookmarks, search engine results, links from other sites, links within posts, and so on. On the surface it seems like a simple thing, but there are likely to be certain gotchas.

That said, about https, the software does not send clear passwords across the http connection. In fact, the password is never ever sent at all.

Our biggest risk, security wise, is that someone breaches an existing account - worse if it's a moderator or admin type account. This can happen if we don't have strong passwords here, or if you use the same password here as you do on some other site that gets compromised.

Changing the forum software is a huge lift. Even doing an upgrade to the existing software has unknown bad side effects. Unfortunately, xenforo is not scalable as designed (images and avatars and other files are served from the file system).

But making this site available 24/7/365 with virtually no issues for all these years has been my main focus. The more I would mess with things, the less chance there is of wrecking the existing experience without making things better. I know there have been a handful of times where the site's had issues and I've fixed those as quickly as possible. In general, though, since we started running xenforo, the site has been available 24/7/365 except when the physical machine we're hosting on at AWS failed, or recently the slowness in the database that I fixed when I was notified of the problem.

I'm around, just not posting. I do have one post to make in the forum, regarding Scoot and Dame.
