OT Portland Vacation

Wasn't being condescending. Can blow the whole shit-hole that is the Portland-Vancouver Metro off the map for all I care. There's little I enjoy there in that whole shit entrapment of traffic. Terrible, terrible planning of sence of foresight. And the two sides can't agree on anything.

Whatever. Let's not derail this thread further.

You don't speak for everyone. I love this city, and having grown up here, I've gathered over the years that most people who live here do as well.

We look at Portland as some kind of bizarre place to be avoided when possible. Vancouver is far more quiet, laid-back, suburban, organized, and Conservative. There's a LOT to be desired about that.

By the way...I'm speaking for Vancouver, not Washington.
Sorry, but 63 years of experiencing both cities has cemented my opinions about each. But kudos to Vancouver for embracing endless sprawl and making an attempt to put the infrastructure in place to try and deal with it.....at least their hearts were in the right place......

We always hit the zoo, and the aquarium in Newport. Also, Enchanted Forest. Those are usually must-do's for us. I forgot about OMSI though, great suggestion. The biggest struggle is trying to not spend all our money eating out at all the old spots i used to go.
Dang. You got mine (Enchanted Forest). Artic Circle down here was flattened years ago. It was Bobs before that, for many, many years. Sad....

If you want to go somewhere exciting, I'd recommend finding out which Wal-Mart Sly goes to, and stroll around there for awhile..... (j/k)

The Mac Wal-Mart is worth is a visit. Just for the views.

Miller Woods is a great 4+ mile outdoor stroll. Couple other basic but solid outdoor hikes out here.

Endless sprawl? Come on man....we're not exactly North Dakota or Texas here. Personally, I much prefer the layout of this city to that of Portland. Portland is WAY too crammed together and urban for my tastes (not to mention the politics). I guess that's just a matter of personal opinion.

I've always said that Vancouver has the perfect mix of "uptown feel" and "Spread-out sticks and suburbia". If you want a modern, high-rise Vancouver with a touch of Liberalism, then go to West Vancouver. But even there, there is still a touch of grass-roots Conservatism that balances it out perfectly.

And if you want a more "down-to-earth" Suburbia, then head East to Cascade Park and the surrounding areas.

I like it. I feel it balances itself out wonderfully.

Again....I guess it's a matter of personal opinion.

OP, if you're going to visit Vancouver, check out Fort Vancouver and the Barracks. And check out Down Town Vancouver in the West. There's not a ton to do, but there's a good waterfront just south of there, as well as Esther Short Park to hang out in, with a Starbucks nearby and a playground for the kids.

I was thinking about enchanted forest but it's hit and miss as to whether or not people like it.

Vantucky wouldn't exist without Portland. It's just Portland sprawl/burbs.

But Cascade Park, Camas, 4th Plain, Mill Plain.... Kill me now. That was shit traffic a decade before Portland traffic became the death hole it is now. Used to have to drive through much of it twice/week back for 6-7 years.

Winner---> SILVER CREEK FALLS!

We went a month ago, and the weather was BEAUTIFUL! Take a picnic lunch to save some bucks, and play in the water....

PLEASE, for the love of Jehovah, if you are going to play in the water, BE CAREFUL! Every summer I hear the same things over and over and over about people drowning on the waterways in this area. High Rocks seems to be the biggest culprit.

BE SAFE! I would be heartbroken if the kids from any of our members here drowned.

Dude, Vancouver existed before Portland did. Hello? Fort Vancouver? Founded in 1830-something? It was a Military post before it was a city.

I'll grant you that Mill Plain can be ungodly, but it depends on the time of day. Rush hour....ugh, yeah, it can be pretty bad.

Fourth Plain...eh, it depends on where you go. NE Fourth Plain, west of Andresen, is pretty spotty. There's a few places on Fourth Plain that are pretty poor and have the highest crime rate. From Andresen west to I-5, that whole area is not a place I'd want to be alone in on foot at night.

The biggest problem with Fourth Plain are the people who use it during rush hour to try and avoid SR-500, because they don't want to sit through the lights on SR-500. During rush hour, it can be utter hell traveling on SR-500 with those goddamn traffic lights. But SR-500 can handle the traffic, but not the middle of the city during rush hour, which is why Fourth Plain clogs up so much down around Falk Road (I used to live in The Glenn townhouses down there when we first moved here).

Fourth Plain is more sparse traffic-wise once you get past I-205. and up towards 503.

Do you even know Silver Creek Falls, dude? "This area"?

Based on your posts you know nothing about this area (you seem to know everything about the entire West Coast, really).

SCF is nowhere near High Rocks.

Silver Creek Falls is amazing. Great, great hike. Hit the big natural pool for a dip. Haven't done that in 4-5 years.

Yeah, it had been close to 10 years since I was there. Bad news- you can't swim in the pool under the South falls anymore. Years past, I had gone directly under the falls. In hindsight, it wasn't probably the smartest thing I did, and probably why you can't swim there anymore. Someone probably had a log bonk them on the head, after falling for 130+'.....

It's all shit. Back when PDX still had notable rush hours, Vantucky traffic was shit traffic. How long have you been back from the Bay Area? I mean, you're always talking about that like you lived there just yesterday.

Will throw it on the list! My mom used to take us kids there when i was just tiny, some of the earliest memories i have. Great suggestion, i never would have remembered.
We used to go to some sweet swimming holes with natural rock slides out by Wilimina also...and Jones Creek.

I did hear about some kid going over the big waterfall at SCF a few years ago, seems like a rarity, and they were crossing safety rails that they shouldn't have.

The entire SCF hike is amazing, probably my favorite in the area. So many different water falls and nice shade on a warm day.

The oneonta gorge waterfall hike is great too, especially on a hot day.

Where in Mac? Have two daughters around the age of yours and would be happy to show you around or at least make some local recommendations.

Not sure exactly where. I appreciate the offer! I just may take you up on it. My good friend who is getting married (main reason for the trip) bought a place in Carlton, and the wedding is in Yamhill where we will be camping/partying for a couple days after the ceremony. So ill mostly be all over your general area.

Take the kid to the pools. Great indoor pool at the McMinnville Aquatic Center. Cool outdoor pool in Carlton on a warm afternoon. Cheap admission at both.

If you get ambitious, the Evergreen Aquatic Park is amazing.

As I said earlier, there's several cool hikes/parks.

I was just using High Rocks as an example, with my point being: be careful. There's a lot of drowning in this area during the summer time.

Any time you want to stop being a dick....and YES, you WERE being condescending earlier, I just chose to ignore it....then you are welcome to stop. There was nothing offensive about that post. If you choose not to understand what I was saying, that's on you.

Just relax. I'm actually trying to be civil in this thread. Fucking seriously.

No I'm not. I've mentioned that I moved up here in 1995. You certainly seem to get offended by a traffic discussion easily. I'm thinking you just want me to agree with you.

Here....

I agree with you.

Now shut the fuck up already. This was never a strong point of contention for me. So stop being a dick about this.

It's fast food, dude. I dunno what your experiences or expectations are. Mine are low.

I don't ever expect consistency or perfection. You prolly had it on a bad day. But it's legit. it's cheaper than McD's. A third of the price at the local McMenamin's. They have good friends.

I eat fast food maybe 2-3 times per month. I've never had a bad meal there.

Ha i expect it to be at least as good as wendys.
Due to my experience I can't recommend it.
If you can, thats fine. I personally think it's one of the worst burgers I've ever had.
That includes the place that couldn't ever meet payroll, and is now closed.

Vancouver BC is easily the better Vancouver.

Bad dog!

I went and did the Oneonta falls hike today(second time I've done it in) It was breathtaking, stunningly beautiful, but the water is cold (45 degrees or maybe colder?) and gets moderately deep. I don't know exactly how deep, but it was up to my waist and I am 5'11".

It's amazing on a warm day though. You would probably have to help your 8 year old get over the log jam that you have to climb in order to get back there. It is definitely precarious, but absolutely worth it. I saw a few kids who looked younger than 8, but they all had parental assistance. The logs are pretty big and sturdy, but you will want to be careful climbing over them. There is some balancing involved with crossing them but as long as you take your time and play it safe it is not too treacherous.

Oneonta is just a mile or so past multnomah falls if you are driving from town. You'll go passed a tunnel on the side of the road which you can no longer drive through. The hike to the falls begins with a short flight of stairs going down to the water near that tunnel.

It's magical there, a very unique hike. You can swim right up to the bottom of the waterfall, the water is fairly deep at that point, but it's not a requirement unless you want to experience it.

I'll post some pictures here in a bit.

The end of the trail, the reward is an amazing opportunity to swim up to the falls.

Fonzing it up at the falls, ayyyyyy.

Looking back through the gorge.

The water was cold and slow moving, great on a hot day

The bottom of the log jam at the entrance, showing you how high up it goes. I'd say it's a good 18 feet high.
