Technically yes, but if the Blazers use the Hood DPE no. If they don't use it the player they sign we would only have the minimum to offer that player so the likelihood they signed a multi year deal for the minimum is pretty low.
Okay, so they can sign me to a multi-year minimum contract. I don't need the Hood DPE, my bank account doesn't care about that.

To Washington:
2020 First Round Pick
Gary Trent Jr.

To Portland:
Davis Bertans

Considering how bad Tolliver has been at center, a guy like Chriss could be the difference between a win and a loss. Most the losses can be pinned on the bench’s inability to hold or maintain leads that the starters have given them, and the majority of the blame can fall on their complete inability to rebound the ball. In the last five games without Skal, Portland’s bench ranks last in the NBA in rebounding (along with scoring) So while a ten day guy may seem like a waste of money and time, it really wouldn’t be.
I agree that the bench has been SO bad that Portland should be doing something about it. But thus far, they haven't.... My theory is as to why is because of the financial ramifications.

It's easy for us fans to over-look or ignore that these teams are first & foremost a business.

Can you sign a player to a multi-year contract on the buy out market?
Yes you can, as long as you have either the cap room or an exception to be able to do so.
I believe Portland has used every exception they have, and can now only sign players to 1-yr minimum contracts.

Doesn’t look like Saric is in Phoenix’ plans as he’s had his role reduced and is a RFA after the season. He’d be a good fit in Portland as he can handle the ball and space the floor. Would fit very well next to Nurkic imo. There are multiple ways of acquiring him as his figure is only $3.5M and they also have a $19M expiring in Tyler Johnson.

Would you rather have Saric or Markieff?

I think Tyler Johnson would be a decent back up PG and Saric seems like a good fit as well.

That's not the only explanation.

A very real possibility is Jody has instructed NO that he cannot increase the team's salary any further. That would limit his ability to sign 10-day contracts & gives a justifiable reason why the team has kept the open roster spot(s) despite the number of injuries.

Remember, with Nurk, Collins, Hood, & Skal all being out - Portland could've temporarily signed a 15th & 16th player to the active roster. Instead they've kept it at 14 players - which leaves Portland with only 9-10 healthy players every game.
I wanted to revisit this one more time, while allowing me to adjust my tin-foil hat a bit.

1-2 weeks ago Dame had a statement that 'he didn't sign up for this'....

He knows how depleted the team is. I'm wondering if he went to managment asking why we haven't picked up a 15th man (or a 16th) & was told we aren't increasing the team salary.

Subsequently he makes the statement to the media that he didn't sign up for this, which is a veiled shot at ownership/management.

Dame is not the type to be complain through the media - but he will apply pressure if needed.

When did Dame ever say that?

I didnt hear that comment, but thats interesting.

Is this too much to give up (if the 1st is lottery protected) or is this pretty fair? Obviously if Phoenix preferred Maker we could switch him and Morris but I doubt it.

That is NOT what Dame said. Dame even said that's not what he said. Of course national media ran with it like he wants out.

Those aren’t the type of players that fetch first round picks, even combined, so yeah it probably isn’t very fair.

The last day or two I've been trying to see what trades looked like if we gave up (maybe?) too much but the other teams would definitely be happy. This is like a max offer but we should definitely try no picks or only 2nds first. Even better if the result is keeping our 1st to use in a Whiteside for Covington and Dieng deal.

Dame said he was saying because of the injuries this isn't the team they were hoping to have when he signed his extension. He never expected them to be bad this year.

Whiteside and a first for Covington and Dieng seems pretty fair for both sides. That’s one of the few proposals involving Whiteside that actually make sense. Another one would involve Sacramento.

That's still by far my favorite trade and one I'll be very disappointed in not happening.

@Scalma you won't like this because it involves trading Trent but combine the two. Since our 2nd round pick this year is protected 56-60 (which won't convey) it doesn't show up on Trade NBA but in this deal it would be going to Detroit.

Re-sign Saric and Skal in the off season

Guards: Dame, CJ, Rose, Simons

Wings: RoCo, Snell, Hood?, Little

Bigs: Nurk, Collins, Saric, Skal

That team is a heck of a lot deeper than this year. Probably pick up another cheap big and another guard/wing and they'd be pretty good.

Evidently multiple teams are interested in signing Kenny Wooten (yeah, the Oregon guy) to a 10 day. He’s averaging 3.5 bpg and is one of, if not the best defender in the g league. 6’9 230 with a 7’2” wingspan.

I have always been a big believer that in todays NBA your role player need to be long and athletic (unless just pure talented) which is something PDX has not adopted. Their version is Little who at 6'5" just doesn't fit the bill in my opinion. Aminu was long, but never considered him athletic. Ed Davis has been the closest thing to that and I think most on here would welcome him back with open arms.

Defense in the NBA isn't about individual stoppers because offensive players are just too good. You win with the ability to switch and not get overmatched. You win with limiting the offense to one shot. You win making shooters adjust their shots. Length and athleticism does that. Now if they think that offense will win it all, then never mind.

Just my frustrated opinion.

lottery protected 1st round pick

I would prefer the same trade for Covington+Dieng, but I think Covington has higher value and just our 1st would not be enough even if we get Dieng. I think Minnesota wants to use both Covington and Dieng in a trade that gets them a player back not just a pick and cap space because no FA is signing there anyway and then they won't have the ability to match salaries next season if they give up those two contracts.

Hornets have been looking to get in on Drummond, but maybe they can give a look to Hassan. They can get him the 30 min role he wants since Zeller is kind of injury prone and has been even leapfroged by Biyombo nowadays.

This gets as to:
Lillard/Simons
CJ/Trent
Bogdanovic/MKG
Melo/Marvin
Nurkic/Dedmon

Marvin can be kept for next season with a team friendly contract i guess, he is not a bad backup. And I would match whatever Bogdan brings, i don't think there is much money out there for him summer 2020.

2020/21 team:
Lillard/Ant
CJ/Bogdanovic
Hood/Little
Zach/Marvin
Nurkic/Dedmon

Bogdanovic will be the playmaker we need in the 2nd unit and will help Ant settle in more of a scoring role. There is enough D in this roster as well I believe.
