I think you're looking at it wrong. It's not that they need someone better than those guys, they just need another body. 10-day contracts are a way to bring in another body without committing to a player for the rest of the season once we get bigs healthy and at the same time help keep the tax burden minimal for adding a player to the roster.

I understand the purpose of 10-day contracts. I also know Hezonja has had a bad back....? My point was that Hoard and Brown are bodies they aren't using. Although I guess that would eventually butt up against that 45-day limit

if it's a C, the only people I can think of are guys like Amir Johnson, Zaza Pachulia, Jason Smith, Tyler Zeller....and I seriously doubt any of those guys would go the 10-day contract route

so then I guess we're talking mostly about g-league affiliate players?

Some bigs that are free agents. Some of them are under contract overseas but they can usually get out of those rather easily.

Eric Moreland
Kenneth Faried
Greg Monroe
Eric Mika
Deyonta Davis
Chris McCullough
Andrew Bogut
Henry Ellenson
Marcin Gortat
Ekpe Udoh
Tyler Zeller

I don’t know how many of them are realistically available, but I do know every one of them would be an upgrade over Tolliver. Moses isn’t even an option as he’s not really ready for the NBA and he would have to be converted to a standard contract once his days are used up anyway.

I hope not.

Moreland is an interesting gamble.

Drummond to Portland?

I mean I feel like if I think about it long enough I’d buy in, but I don’t really see the point. It would probably also cost one of Collins and Simons, at least.

If I remember correctly the Blazers have had interest in Drummond in the past. So this isn't all that shocking.

If his plan is to opt out, what is the logic on our part? We're either trading an expiring for an expiring or we're going to have Whiteside/Drummond/Nurk on the same roster?

I guess it will cost us Nurk as we cannot expect them to be ok with a timeshare. And there is literally no reason to give a max to Drummond while we have Nurk with 12M. If you don't trust Nurks recovery just keep Hassan, he should be way cheaper.

ok then...I misunderstood. I thought we were talking about 10-day candidate contracts and those guys don't seem like candidates for those

I guess I'm thinking that Portland has had roster space + vet minimum contracts + disabled player exception for a while and has not made any move. Not sure why

Portland interested in Drummond makes little sense. If he's going to opt out in Detroit, he'd opt out in Portland, and to get him the Blazers would have to give up a lot more than just Whiteside. Maybe Nurkic isn't healing as fast as thought?

that’s not the impression Stotts gave literally a day ago.

Plus it’s Keith Smith, not much of a source.

Totally. Trading Nurk for Drummond and then having the possibility of both Drummond/Whiteside leaving really would be a disaster. I can't come up with a scenario where a move for Drummond makes sense.

I saw again that Philly looking hard for playmaker/long distance shooter. If we don't want Harris for CJ, can we involve a third team? The question is becoming who? With Porter and Griffith seemingly frequently injured and Love old and burdened with that contract, are there any forwards who are good and available? Is there somebody just waiting to blossom like Kawhi was when SA traded for him?

It’s not sexy, but Glenn Robinson should be a priority, whether now or in the summer when he hits the market. Perfect fit.

I guess I would still take a chance on Porter, injury history not that bad, contract not so bad and he is not old. Really only has one year on his contract after this year. CJ would not be involved in a trade for him though. While I am writing this, I don't know, Porter scares me; rather find a younger healthier guy on a lower salary.

I think the trade to make, when CJ is available to trade, is CJ and Baze for Harris and Richardson. We get the wing we need in Harris. We also get a SG to replace CJ and would really help our perimeter D. The trade gives the Sixers the perimeter scorer they need next to Simmons and a SF that keeps them competitive this year and will give them some cap flexibility this offseason.

Rumor out of Atlanta was Brooklyn pick and expirings(Parsons). I dont think they're getting someone's best prospect, and I dont k ow if they're expecting to. Seems more like a get what we can before he walks on us sort of move? Of course, we'll see if that's the case.

from a basketball POV, I’m still of the opinion that Love would actually make the defense better, but that’s also with a healthy Nurk.

If contract and injuries weren't a concern I actually like Loves skillset / fit. Though defensively they super suck.

If you get love using Whiteside you could use Bazemore or the Hood DPE to find another big. But I’m pretty sure Olshey wouldn’t make that trade until he saw Nurkic play, and I doubt Cleveland is in a real rush either, despite the outburst.

Drummond to Portland?

What I'm hearing is that the Blazers interest in Drummond is strictly as a 3rd team facilitator for specific teams that want him but don't necessarily have the right contracts (I read into it as expirings) but have someone Portland would want.

This is why I was trying to make a trade between the Hornets, Pistons, and Blazers work yesterday.

Is it possible that Nurkic isn't healing correctly as they had hoped?

That makes more sense than anything I could come up with! Thank you!

my preference if possible would to get Covington as he is on a very team friendly contract compared to guys like Tobias Harris and Otto Porter. We need to avoid large contracts as much as we can.

doubtful, this was Stotts yesterday:

[He's] getting to the point where he can get out on the floor. He’s met all the goals or bars or whatever you want to call it, but I think everybody is encouraged with his improvement, but when he’s ready to get on the floor, when he’s ready physically, the next challenge will be mentally to get back into the fight. -- Blazers head coach Terry Stotts pregame on Jusuf Nurkic’s progress
