First, I'm not all that high on CJ. I'd be fine with GTJ stepping into his spot. Plus I love Delon Wright and think he's a perfect fit either behind or alongside Dame. Also, while I don't love THJ, he is a starting-caliber guard, would probably play more off-ball alongside Dame than CJ does, and makes a ton less. And (as mentioned), he (and Dieng) will both be expirings next year, giving us a ton more cap flexibility next year.

All that said, what additional compensation would you require (and from whom) in order to make that deal reasonable to you?

Edit: Looking further at THJ's numbers confirms my suspicions about his off-ball play (over 50% of his 2's and 85% of his 3's are assisted, and his TS% is significantly higher than CJ's (thought that could just be the Doncic effect). I'm probably fooling myself, but I actually believe that the Blazers as a whole would be better simply by making a CJ for THJ swap.

heh, i can see that from this proposal.

If we're trading CJ, I want a bonafide star forward, or at least a top tier 3 & D guy. What we're getting is an overpaid chucker who can't defend and a decent role player in Delon.

Who's giving up a bonafide star forward for CJ, who really is no more than an overpaid chucker in his own right? As much as we might want that, I feel like cap flexibility and decent role-players are the best we're gonna do in any CJ deal.

Also, I might argue that Wright is in fact a top-tier 3&D guy, given his 38% 3fg and his dbpm of 1.5.

I'm just amazed that as recently as six weeks ago people were willing to throw Trent into practically any deal just to get rid of him. Now if we don't get something really good for him, he's practically untouchable.

maybe there's a disconnect in definition but I have a hard time seeing CJ being traded for any "bonafide star" because he isn't a star himself. The best you can hope for is a lateral move with a better fit.

I also think that CJ's extension has significantly depressed his value. That's 3 more years after next season at 33M/year. He's owed 130M over the next 4 seasons and he isn't close to elite at anything

What a terrible contract... Neil obviously didn’t learn from the summer of 2016
 
Well we know now what CJ want was to get paid. I believe Olshey again over paid another that wasn't deserving the amount. Yes CJ can shoot the ball but everything is below average. The tweet about Iggy wasn't very smart by him but don't think his play going be different here because he hasn't change how he plays with his contract extension. That play is iso 95 percent of the time and not tall enough to guard majority of the 2 guards in this league. Would I sure for the right pieces.
 
Okay now that the deadline is passed. Exactly what are the options for this summer?
Also do they try to pick up a player off waivers to round out the roster?
What do ya think?

They should add Burke ASAP. They’re not gonna be a player for any major buyout guy, not while the LA teams (and Miami) are in contention.
 
I think he will stand Pat for rest of the season. He will want to continue developed Simons and Trent. So I will not see him pick up another guard.

There is a roster spot. But the whole idea of getting rid of Skal doesn't make sense for the limited amount of cap relief they will be getting. Even more so if they pick someone up?

Skal wouldnt have played. If they sign Burke, or another buyout guy, they will. The savings are just a bonus.

I guess that could be? They probably know more about when other players will be returning also. Just seems like they have been short big bodies all season.
 
I've been thinking about this a lot and this is what I came up with to why I'm still mad that Skal was traded if the reasoning was because he wasn't healthy and not part of the long term plans.

Philadelphia was trying to clear multiple roster spots to take on Burks and Robinson. They ended up having to waive Jonah Bolden and Trey Burke, which means they still had to pay them their remaining salary and their full salary counted against the cap. This led to them having to dump James Ennis in order to stay under the tax line as well.

If the Portland/Atlanta trade was worked into a 3-way trade, instead of Philly having to trade Ennis and pay Bolden or Burke to go away they could've sent either Bolden or Burke to Portland. Then instead of Portland giving the cash to Atlanta it could've been Philly giving them cash, since they had to buyout those players anyway and they wouldn't have to give up Ennis either and still would've been under the tax line.

Atlanta gets the same player and roughly the same amount of cash so there is no reason for them not to do it.

Portland shaves $600,000-700,000 off their salary number instead of $2.3 million and has to pay whichever player comes back in the deal for the remaining games but ends up not having to give Atlanta $1.9 million in cash. At the end of the season this is really close to a wash in terms of money saved overall but they also would've gained a healthy body to use instead of leaving an open roster spot and having several games where only 8-10 players are available.

In my opinion, this is an example of why I don't think our GM is creative enough.

Being creative doesn't do any good if the other team isn't interested and that's something nobody in this forum knows. It's almost like using the trade machine and then saying why didn't get so and so for our so and so.

Well its impossible for us to know if they asked or not, but what reasons would you give for one of the teams for not doing it? This isnt a trade machine hypothetical, all of those deals actually happened. Its just arranging them differently. Its possible it came up and someone said no, but Id actually say part of being a GM is the politics involved in getting other GM’s to say, “yes” once in a while.

Just saw this on Bleacher report and was curious about what others thought. I know a lot don't like bleacher report, but am bored.

Brooklyn trades LeVert and Prince and a 2020 1st to portland.

I don't follow Brooklyn so don't know much about either.

I would possibly consider that as I like LeVert and both players are young.
Prince could fit too.

I do that trade. LeVert is everything we ever wanted CJ to be. He attack the rim with regularity and he shoot 3s well enough. At 6 foot 6 he’s a lot better defender too. His playmaking is better too. And Prince is a combo forward. He’s the younger version of Ariza that we need. And that first round pick is projected to be 20th pick.
Dame/Simons
LeVert/Trent
Ariza/Hood/Little
Collins/Prince
Nurkic
So not including the picks and the free agents yet we would already be loaded at shooting guards and forwards

Meh deal.

I like LeVert, but he's injured a lot. I think Prince is a 9-10 man in the rotation type guy on a good team (on the Blazers, that would put him ~5-6 men deep).

It's an OK deal, but I think there are better options available.

Yeah I definitely agree that there are better options out there but if we did pull off this trade I wouldn’t be mad

That trade is HORRIBLE.

Both Levert and Prince are on bad long term contracts. Both are inefficient and mediocre shooters (at best), and neither is a good defender.

Levert is quickly becoming one of the most overrated player in the league. Prince has regressed.

Oh, but we get a mid-1st round pick on a weak draft?

How does that get us any closer to contention? That trade would be beyond terrible.
 
Probably time to get back into Jet Blue and American airlines on the cheap.
Most likely one will wash out but if you get lucky and one has a "Break out" you could get a lot of value. Might as well take a flyer on em.
At this point it's just "Next man up". One of them is gonna get some playing time.
Not willing to give a mid level to the "Princess" or the clowns at "Carnival" . Might as well just buy a draft pick.

Prince is average at best, but I don't see how LeVert is overrated. He is injury prone for sure, but I believe he passes the eye test whenever i see him play and 52.5M/3 is not that bad.

Btw I don't think there will be better offers. I never seen anything about a good offer for CJ and I don't think anybody around the league really values him that much so as to give up something better than this. Of course Olshey would never trade him as well lol

- Bad defender
- Inefficient as hell
- Extremely inconsistent (50ish TS%)
- Injury prone

Basically the worst type of player to pair with Dame. But for whatever reason, this fanbase loves the Caris Levert and Aaron Gordon types. I don't understand it.
