My evidence is the best yet..

Bayless is a PG, because that's what position he plays on the Blazers. Sergio is a PG because that's also what position he plays on the Blazers.

and finally, the kicker, Blake is a PG because that's what position he plays on the Blazers.

........drumroll please!!!!!!!!........ ka-bang! I win!

Okay, clearly nobody has anything we can hang our hat yet on as far as evidence that Bayless can, or cannot, play PG well enough to be an asset to this team. So we'll wait and see, and re-visit the idea after we see more.

A couple of you provided some good insights and some recognize the Blazers are simply developing players (not positions) at this stage and will adjust line-ups as the players develop. Thanks for your input.

Many of you followed the predictable tack of stealing the thread and trying to frame it as having something to do with Sergio, which it does not, and attacking me and my views instead of putting forth any basis for your opinion. No surprises there. I'm done responding to them.

If one of our 5 guards goes away next year, or the year after, it figures to eventually be Steve due to age, or Bayless due to being our 3rd or 4th best SG, not our only pure PG. This was probably the worst team for Bayless to go to considering his competition here, so that makes him a likely trade component if we make a trade. I hope we don't.

Sergio's the one that's goin. When we win the title, Bayless will be starting at PG and Blake will be backing him up.

Again, he isn't a pure PG and he isn't as pure as Sergio... but he plays PG fine. He sets up our offense, he guards PGs and he dribbles it up the court, which goes great with Roy and even Rudy.

The NBA has evolved from that thouhg. Did you watch Devin Harris? Bayless is the same type of player. Tony Parker also (same type that is, nothing more).

You know, he's still shooting 35% over the last 2 games combined, right?

Not trying to be a Jay Bay hater, because I think he's going to be good someday. But one good game doesn't mean he's ready to be our point guard. (One game where he only got 3 assists in 25 minutes mind you. Most of his success was just in getting to the basket, creating opportunities for himself...almost a perfect description of a SG.) I think he can play the point guard position in stretches, but I agree with Maris...nobody has given any real evidence that Bayless is, or even can be, a PG full time.

Feel free to jump in with the H8r's if you want. It's up to you.

With the way that Roy can be a facilitator and a scoring threat, where is the need for a mini-Nash? I would much rather have an athletic player who can hit shots and drive to the lane (ala Jason Terry) than a pass-first product of the system like many "pure point guards". Sergio will never thrive in Portland unless you get another coach. The Mavericks were 35-17 last year with an uptempo, athletic slasher at point guard and played .500 ball after getting a future HOF'er and one of the most pure points in the league. Bayless will be a great player and if you guys dont want him, send him+Martell Webster+ Raef to Dallas and we'll send you the point guard you all want in Jason Kidd.

Great post and great perspective.

I'll pass on the Bayless for Kidd trade, but I would like to trade just a few of our idiot fans for you and a couple of other intelligent Dallas fans.

So Maris, does tonight's game qualify as proof?

That he's a SG with potential to eventually be a player in this league? Yes. I've maintained that all along.

As a PG? Not at all. He ignored open shooters all night long, and never had the team playing as a unit.

What is ACTUALLY your question?

Is it:

a) Who fits the more stereotypical, "pure", pass-first PG?

or

b) Who makes the Blazers better, while playing the PG position?

The answers are:
a) Sergio
b) Bayless

The more important one to fans is:
b)

The more important one to some fans with a strange chip on their shoulder, and pre-determined bias:
a)

I agree. Some people are upset that he isn't a pure PG... but I honestly think that the league is developing more into a Tony Parker/Devin Harris prototype PG league. Even KP was talkin' about the fact that it isn't really about positions anymore.

And the Dallas fan puts things into perspective. :biglaugh:

Repped.

Classic.

Never mind MARIS, he's making a "career" out of riling people up around here with his running commentary about Sergio. My only hope is that if Sergio gets traded he goes in the deal.

I suspect he would choose another sensitive subject to fuel.

My being a Blazers fan and supporting my favorite Blazers offends you? "Riles you up"? :dunno:

Utterly bizarre, and quite an anti-Blazer attitude to have. :tsktsk:

I have to admit that I was suckered for awhile thinking you actually believe the stuff you write, then it dawned on me what you are really up to and now I think it's kind of funny.

Maris, you are more of a fan of Sergio than you are of this team, and you show it time and time again. I'm pretty sure you would decline a trade for Chris Paul if it involved trading Sergio.
