I work with two guys who moved here from Colorado and one of them this is his first winter here, they are greatly entertained by how much people are talking about our "snowstorm".

I remember back to back ice storms when I was a kid in NE Portland. Two years in a row we got nailed. First year was the worst. My parents had this big old house that had a huge fire place, lost power for a week. Set up the camping gear in the living room and had 3 of our elderly neighbors over camping out with us. One lady my dad had to cut out of her house with a hand saw. A huge tree crashed onto her house, blocked both doors. It's the mix of snow, rain, and ice of this storm that has me concerned.

Doesn't matter if you're from Colorado or Antarctica, if you got not power in your home it's a bitch.

I'll never forget how quiet everything was and then you would suddenly hear a tree give away because of all the ice. Just a huge crashing sound and then silence again.

Those were on January 17, 1979 and January 17, 1980. One year to the day apart. I was working out in Gresham (almost to Troutdale) and it was brutal. My boss lived in Milwaukie and made almost $200 towing people out of ditches and snowbanks with his 4 wheel drive on the way into work. Snow is a nuisance but ice storms are seriously fucked.

Ice storms are pretty universally bad. It's about what you're used too though. When I lived in Canada a foot or two of snow was basically nothing to really care about, people pretty much just did their normal stuff. Here a couple of inches of snow and it shuts down the city.
Never been to a place that handles ice storms well though.
Also, I don't think either of them is entertained by people without power, they're entertained by how big of a deal is being made of a chance for a couple inches of snow.

Just went and filled up the propane tank just in case we lose power. As long as I can cook on the BBQ I'm fine.

don't know why but its soooo annoying when people from outside of Portland thinks its hilarious to make fun of Portland snow. I go to Denver all the time. its flat as you can get. no hills. snow plows and sand and salt etc all night long. Same with Minnesota where I have friends. The roads are clear. There isn't a hill for hundreds of miles. Its different. I live on top of a hill or whatever that's about 800 feet up. When we have snow the turns to ice, driving down the road to town is mayhem until its cleared.

It's different is the way I'd describe it. There is some validity to it too. My boss from Colorado is used to ice/snow lives at about 1000 feet and makes it into work no matter what weather there is but he's used to driving in it. My wife who hasn't lived anywhere but Portland / Hillsboro it snows outside or it's icy and she just can't do it...

Just want to say, I hope with whatever weather events we get all of you have a safe week/weekend. If anyone's in desperate need of help in the Portland area just let me know and I do have a truck w/ 4wd that I am willing to try to help people out if I can.

That sounds about right. Somewhere around 1979 we had an ice storm so bad that a lot of limbs came off our very big Douglas Fir. The whole front yard must have been 2 1/2 feet deep in boughs. I had two friends come over and cut up firewood all day and then left me plenty for my fireplace. I then ran a burn barrel continuously for several days.
One hell of an ice storm.

If I need help it would be at 6 am and I doubt if you'd be up then. Yeah, that's the time I go to the hospital.

I am up by 4:45am most days. That's about the time my oldest usually wakes up. Unfortunately, I don't know how easy it would be for you to get in and out of our truck it's pretty high off the ground, but I'd certainly try if you needed help.

We've got a step stool.

Thank you. Exactly my thoughts. It’s not comparable IMO

Ooh, I'm so scared. OMG, I've driven with a two wheel drive car in 8 inches of snow. This looks more like a heavy dusting to me.
It's all the other drivers around you is what you have to worry about.

Typical socialist media! fear the snow......lol

Best thing to do in this type of weather is to have a big dinner and then lie down and let your body temperature drop. Once spring comes, you will thaw out and can go back to your normal life. You'll be hungry when you wake up, so have something readily available.

I was going to post that one hit wonder from Canada, cod-raggae "rapper" Snow. But then I realized that retro clip had no kitchy value what-so-ever. But the upstairs neighbor is playing Chicago's Greatest Hits so if I have to suffer.... so do you!

It's all overblown. 2" if we're lucky. Ticks me off that my kids' activities have been cancelled this weekend.
