Trade Powell to Portland!

At a trade deadline where the best player available was Aaron fuckin' Gordon (and I like Gordon fine as a player), I think Olshey did pretty well (and I'm not a particularly big fan of Olshey as a GM). He traded away a one-dimensional player and a busted player for a good two-way player. Portland is better and Powell is actually worth a large-ish extension, unlike Trent. I don't know if Portland actually will offer one, but it's still a better situation. Portland is now at no risk of getting Crabbed again.

You mean they can't shoot themselves in the foot again? Crabbe (like Gary) was a choice. They have no choice with Powell.

Do we get his bird rights? If not, we just gave up a RFA whose future we controlled for a UFA who could walk for nothing in return
We do have his bird rights but he could still walk for nothing. If we weren't wanting to pay Gary why would we pay Powell. Also unlike Gary, Powell will have the opportunity to take less money to start elsewhere.

We will have to agree to disagree. The #5 guy in your starting lineup who is your #6 scorer, a rookie who isn't playing, and a protected 1st round pick 4 years from now....just doesn't seem like a lot.
Everyone says we could offer more, so we go Hood, Little and a pick. Easy to look at it the same way.

So we trade our 9th guy in the rotation who looks awful, a 2nd year player, not even a rookie, who isn't playing much, and a pick that you're unsure when it conveys.

I'm not sure the Denver package was a lot for Gordon, but I also don't think the Blazers could necessarily offer something better. I'd imagine the upside, positional flexibility, and four years of Hampton cost control was more appealing than Gary or Little.

That's exactly what I mean--but more, I meant they don't face the "dilemma" of either overpaying a mediocrity or losing a player for nothing. Losing him for nothing was the right call, but that never feels good so it was a dilemma of sorts.

And no way I would have given up Nas and a pick for Gordon.

I guess I am crazy; but the only way this really makes sense is if Olshey plans to trade CJ sometime before next season; freeing up the money to re-sign Powell. I have always thought Olshey is aiming for the big push next year, not this year; so if this is step 1, we may have to wait awhile for step 2.

Mostly agree.
My only issue is the best player on the market was Vooch... Chicago made some great moves today.

Sad that it took Olshey moving Hood for Stotts to have to play Nas....instead of so many minutes for Hood when he had the option of both.
I think NO is hoping moving Hood has an ancellery effect... Stotts was playing Hood at backup PG a bit. Now the only option will be Ant.

I thought any Gordon trade would've required Hood + [Simons AND Nas] (Hood + Trent wouldn't have have worked under the cap), or alternatively Hood/Simons/Zach if staying under the tax really was a driver. To say nothing of picks, which we would've had to do a trade to guarantee this year's with HOU before sending any more out.

Yes, in a vacuum I think Gordon for all of our young wings may have been a decent deal and helped this year. Gordon as the 3rd or 4th best guy on a team is a good team. But if it ended up being Norman's next 3 months for Hood and Trent's (we weren't matching his RFA), then...ok, I guess?

[semi-joking, but it makes CJ-for-Simmons more palatable now]

(and is this the place where I ask why an armchair forum poster can't be smarter at the NBA than a real-life GM?)

BRIAN! Long time, how the hell have you been?

First reaction was pretty meh.

Do like that Norm offers something different stylistically offensively though. Can get to rim and finish. Interested to see him as a cutter and in 2-man actions with Nurk. Showed some chemistry with Gasol a couple years ago.

Defensively, he's spacey off the ball like Trent, but I like Norm on the ball more. Length allows him to guard up a bit better in switching situations.

Definitely sad to see Gary go. He was one of my favorite Blazers to watch.

All things equal, this:
(1) upgraded our backup SG position,
(2) opened up a roster spot, and
(3) saved us some money to be a player in the buy-out market.

I like it that the Blazers are active and trying to push to improve the team this year. Yes, I would like to see them have picked up a forward that balances the team a bit more, but trades take 2 willing trade partners. Sometimes incremental changes can make a big difference...

Powell played a lot of SF with Toronto.
We know Terry likes a 3 guard lineup in the 4th especially when we are down. Powell is an excellent free throw and three-point shooter and can attack the basket. If he can play alongside Dame and CJ to close out games that would be huge.

I believe Olshey does things like this to force Stotts hands.
