This from an ESPN article about expiring contracts

9. Raef LaFrentz (Portland Trail Blazers)
Expiring Salary: $12,722,500
Soon to be traded? LIKELY

The consensus as of Thanksgiving was that the Blazers would move LaFrentz only if they could get back an undeniable impact player or a top-notch veteran point guard who doesn't carry a long-term contract, such as Kidd or Bibby. Blazers front-office boss Kevin Pritchard then revealed over the weekend that he actually plans to be more aggressive than that with LaFrentz's contract, which will be largely covered by insurance payments once LaFrentz misses the first 41 games of the season with an ongoing shoulder problem. Pritchard referred to LaFrentz's deal as "the card I want to play," but another option is moving the likes of Sergio Rodriguez, Channing Frye and Ike Diogu (although teams prefer to ask for Travis Outlaw). Hanging onto the LaFrentz card and letting him come off the payroll at season's end might help the Blazers when they have to start paying the talented kids on the roster soon to be looking for contract extensions.

It's been reported by ESPN and the Memphis Commercial Appeal over the past two weeks that they have been in contact with the Blazers recently.

Would would it take for a Conley/Gay package? [/pipe dream]

Lamarcus/Roy and or Oden. Rudy at the very very very least.

Lmfao what?! You are so far off bro lol

You don't think the Grizz would demand at least Lamarcus or Rudy as part of a trade package to get Rudy Gay (Brandon and Greg are however in another tier of talent)? I'm LMFAO at you now.

i think it was the and/or that screwed everyone up.

i think that is memphis is really pining for outlaw as reported, and the deal is on the table for the blazers (outlaw/conley), then adding rudy, Frye, and say blake, (maybe Martell instead of Frye) might be able to get it done depending on whatever. they have cap space so they can take alot more salary back. not that they want to.

Rudy/Blake/Frye/Outlaw for Gay/Conley

conley/sergio/bayless
Roy/Martell
Gay/Batum
LMA/Ike
Oden/pryz

if KP thinks that Conley is the answer, that gives us one of the best teams in the league.

just say no to gay. inefficient volume shooter who hasn't shown any indication he'll be better than an average defender or rebounder, and who will want a max-ish extension this summer. i would not trade rudy straight up for him (not that he would be available for anything less than aldridge).

I am not sold on the need for Gay on this roster.

What do we need another high volume shooter on the roster for?

We have already seen that he regressed playing next to a good SG that can score (Mayo) - why bother getting him here to play next to Roy, Aldridge and Oden?

Agreed. Him and Kevin Durant are cut from the same cloth: big scorers on bad teams. Neo-Harvey-Grants.

What? Like KP was some sort of trading wuss before? I don't think KP knows any way to trade, but agressive.

Gay is the closest thing Memphis has to a star. I can't see them trading him, why would they? He's still on his rookie contract so he's not costing them a lot. Conley's stock is lower now than it has ever been, we might be able to get him.

They have OJ Mayo who is and will be a much better player than Gay.

FWIW.

Point taken. I'm thinking that it makes absolutely no sense for Memphis to trade Gay, Gasol.. or Mayo, they are their best players, unless they are getting something better in return. My opinion is that if KP is talking to Memphis, it's about Conley. PG is the position of our biggest need, and Conley's stock is low right now.

I agree. I also do not think Gay is really something we need on this team. It was a FWIW...

Agreed. I like Batum better than Gay for this team. Better defense and less ego, more of a team player... and, we don't know what Batum's ceiling is yet. Hell, he could end up being a superstar if he continues at the pace he going. He's got the tools... and is only 19, wow! Dr. J. anyone?

no.

Yes. IMO. Rudy Gay is the better player, Batum/Webster the better fit.

Or maybe we should just go back to the Whitsitt era motto, "I'm not a chemistry major", stats and resumes are all that matter...

I think that "no" was in reference to my mention of Dr. J. And he's right, Batum will never be in Dr. J's league because he doesn't have the hand and foot size, not able to grip the basketball like a grapefruit... not sure about the leaping ability though.

batum a superstar? no.

batum a better fit? yes, but its hard to tell, when has gay ever had players around him? remember batum was compared to gay by some coming into the draft.

Now I will argue that with you, there's no way in hell that we know how good Batum is going to be. The sky is the limit for him.

Ahh... whoops. Yeah, as much as I like to disagree, I'm not going to argue that one.

Conley really hasn't shown that he'd be anything but a step down from Blake in the short term... or Roy when he teams with Rudy. Conley will probably be traded as OJ should be starting the starting point. At his pre-draft he posted about the same height, length, & weight as Jarret Jack. He also has stated numerous times that he sees himself best projecting as a PG in the league. I could see them really coveting Rudy, but obviously there is no way that Portland is making a MC for RF deal strait up. Maybe part of a larger deal involving picks Gay and Outlaw or Webster or Frye?

Really I'm pretty luke warm on their talent and hope KP has another target in mind

In the short term, you might be right. I don't think KP is thinking in the short term though. I also don't think Memphis is interested in a Blake for Conley trade. They'll want Bayless or Sergio.... and I'm not willing to give up on Sergio. I love our spanish connection.

Huh, any way they could structure it salarywise to send future first rounders our way? Wouldn't mind having one of those (considering their talent level). Likely a pipe dream, but it's possible they'd view it as a way to get good young talent right away rather than waiting for draft picks to show up down the road.

as well as blake and sergio have played...our major weakness is PG. not so much even scoring but on defense and fast breaks. thats the truth. seeing it live last night as duhon abused us made me realize mor ethen ever.

PG WANTED...kidd would be excellent for us. it would also gurantee playoffs and a 2nd round matchup

I say no deal with Memphis. The only player they have that I'd want is Mayo and they won't give him up without getting one of our big 3 in return.

Kidd couldn't hit an outisde shot if the ball had a guide rail to keep it on track.
