Obviously I could Google this, but you know my love of starting threads.

What are the rules for 2-way players - you're allowed 2, right? And our two are Caleb Love and...?

This means that we can't just sign somebody from the G-League (Dillon Jones or, even better, Clingan's old teammate Tristen Newton) without cutting one of our 2-way players? Do we have a roster spot available? Not that any of them deserve it, but you can convert a current 2-way player to a regular contract and free up a 2-way slot that way, right?

MODS! Please merge this with the Melo thread!

It's three and ours are Love, Cooke and Cissoko.

NBA raised the 2-way player limit from two to three

Blazers have 3 in Cissoko, Love, and Cooke

only players with four years or less of NBA experience are eligible to 2-way contracts

Blazers were skating on this ice by entering the pre-season with 2 healthy PG's in Jrue & Scoot. Ice got thinner when they entered the season with one healthy PG while thinking Wesley would be a close enough facsimile to function. Then he got hurt

Blazers are in a bind by loading up the back end of their roster with SG's/SF's: Rupert, Love, Cissoko, Cooke....even Wesley. Teams still need PG's unless they have a unicorn at another position. Portland doesn't.

Compounding the problem is that the Blazers are only 1.5M below the tax line, so even if they waive somebody like Rupert, signing a PG would likely put them over the line unless they wait till about the 30 game mark so they can stay under the line with a pro-rated vet minimum contract

current UFA NBA "PG's" (what do I know...may not really be current):

Spenser Dinwiddie
Markelle Fultz
Cameron Payne
Patty Mills
Talen Horton-Tucker
Corey Joseph
Elfrid Payton
Delon Wright
Ben Simmons

So NBA players are doing 3-ways now?

So it's pretty well universally understood that the Blazers would be well-served to make room on the 15-man for Love and Cissoko. Let's say that happens. Do we then pick up two new 2-way guys?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there is a loophole in the two-way rules where if you pick up new two way players they have their own 50 games they can play. So I would assume Joe would do that.

I'd honestly rather have Love and Sidy over anyone on that list.

probably....I don't see why they wouldn't since two-way's don't count against the cap

Sidy is at 39 games, so 11 to go. Love is at 36 so 14 to go. It's now only 2 weeks till the trade deadline (that came up fast)

I can't determine who the leading candidate for being waived to make room is. Thybulle doesn't look like he'll even be playing before the deadline and I wouldn't think he's be a target for resigning. Rupert is in the dime-a-dozen scrub realm. Reath is kind of in that realm too, but he's a C and the Blazers are skating on thin ice at C because of Timelord's health and Yang's uselessness. Portland has a lot of depth at SG/SF ahead of Rupert

I'd start with Reath, because I think we could sign another 2 way to cover whatever he might bring.

Come to think of it, we might already have that guy playing with the Remix. Not sure if Hinson is eligible for a two-way contract.

We can elevate Love and Sidy to full roster spots - and yes that would open two 2way contract spots. But we need two spots on the main 15 man roster available first.

Murray is useless enough to be cut but with salary next season I don't think we cut him.

Any two of Rupert, Thybulle, Duop, Wesley could be cut. I really have no preference and don't expect contributions from any of them. I was way more shocked when we cut Trendon Watford a few years ago - he was healthy and productive. Even Jabari Walker was more productive last year and he left for the 6ers two way spot.

Yeah let's see how the trade deadline plays out, if we get the opportunity to dump 1-2 contracts it makes sense to do it first.

Maybe Sacramento would be interested in taking on Murray? I'd do that just to dump his contract.

Do we need to cut 2? I asked the following question in another thread, so sorry if I missed the response.

Can we still use the DPE on Dame? Or do we expect him back by the playoffs? I assume that would not help in this situation because it has to be used for a player in the final year of his contract. And we would prefer to sign Siddy and Love on a longer contract? But could we?

How about the Hardship Exception
"If the Blazers have at least four players miss at least three consecutive games and they are expected to be out for at least two weeks beyond that, they could petition for a "Hardship Exception," which allows them to add a temporary 16th roster spot". (Dame, Thybulle, Wesley, Scoot would count)

Was it possible to count 2-way contract players during this period, thus giving Love and Sidy more than just 50 games? I know this is wishful thinking, but I am still curious.

Could we waive Rupert and then sign him to a two-way? Rules state that a player must have less than 4 years of NBA experience which Rupert would qualify. But I believe there are rules about re-signing waived players. But re-signing waived players to two-ways??

I looked it up last week, and I believe the answer was yes if he cleared waivers.

I believe I had heard no on Dame since he was injured prior to us signing him.

The others would only help if they were out for the entire rest of the season I believe but none of them are out for that. So no I don't believe this can give us any help.

If any of that's wrong would love to be told so.

I guess this might be an idea - would probably need to have a great relationship with his agent to known you could pull it off. Although if we cut Rupert not sure we would care that much.

If 29 teams pass on claiming him also not that big of a prize to sign him.

If I'm his agent I might want him to go to a new team with less wing depth. Unless I thought he would struggle even more to pickup their system and earn playing time.

Cronin will likely try first to use trades to open a spot or two. Probably by trading three players for two (say Grant, Rupert, Reath) for a player and then convert Love and Sidy. Alternatively, trading a player for a pick or/or more likely cash considerations, then converting one of the two...maybe doing that twice to make spots for Love and Sidy. Though that could prove difficult if teams don't want the guys we are trying to get rid of to make space.

Cronin could trade one player for a pick/cash considerations and waive another. He has a few options to explore.

He could then sign new two Way players to fill the open two way spots.

I would waive Cooke for sure and try and find a better two way than him for that third spot.
