Start Nance, move Powell to the 2. Have CJ come off the bench to fill it up

I agree with the first two parts. But no for the third, instead start CJ at PG.

Dame hasn't looked good for months going back to before the Olympics. Major concern that with multiple months available to rest prior to the season he couldn't get healthy. Have him rest, or come off the bench until he is back to his old self.

CJ despite his many faults has been the superior player this season.

name all the 20 point scorers that are currently available in a trade. You are mistaken if you don’t think he has pretty significant value.

Mike James averaged 20ppg on a bad team too. There’s been several non descript players that have conquered that 20ppg mark.

Black. Hole.

His defense letting guys get past him preemptively turns into open corner 3’s

Thanks.
a few years ago though. Times change. I wonder if his mindset has? Doubt it though…

It is crazy CJ didnt want to make some effort to understand what KD was saying. He even mentioned same mins more shots but no CJ has pride. Too bad he doesn't show pride when a chair can blow past him.

The defense has been the problem. Much better defensive personnel than Stotts had with Kanter&Melo. Keeping guys fresh and energetic with less minutes to starters. Yet the team is possibly even worse defensively than their historically awful last season. Rebounding, Lillard hot/cold shooting, CJ's assist, etc won't matter when this horrific defense is taking place.

prior to Dame resting the last 2 games, about 123 of Portland's 240 minutes were being played by the 6'3 and under foursome of Dame-CJ-Powell-Simons. That's more than half of all of Portland's minutes. And we're not talking Avery Bradley or Marcus Smart type 6'3. We're talking the lousy defense of Dame-CJ-Simons and frankly, Powell isn't very good defensively either. And if you normalized for Dennis Smith and Mclemore then somewhere around 130 minutes a game have gone to the 6'3 and under troop. 6 of Portland's 14 players are 6'3 and under....for fucksakes that's 43% of the roster! It's lunacy

all the yappage about Powell's wingspan was just noise. The basket is still 10' off the floor and the Blazers will always be at a major disadvantage when more than half of their minutes are going to Frodo and his ilk

Portland will not be able to scheme their way out of this

i don't necessarily think sending CJ to the bench is some magical solution. this roster still desperately needs size and athleticism.

i dont disagree. BUt barring a trade shouldnt we try it?

edit: olshey fired, trade eminent!!!!

I noticed this bit in the article:

"Lillard and McCollum had been the starting backcourt for the last six seasons, during which they made the playoffs each season. But that regular-season success — Portland owns a .557 winning percentage in that span — has not been replicated in the playoffs, where the Blazers went a combined 16-30 with first-round exits in four of those six seasons."

a .557 winning percentage is an average of 45.7 wins in the regular season. That is only 4.7 wins above .500. Apparently, that's deemed a "success" in Olshey-vision

on his podcast with KD a few years ago.

...the one time I liked KD's opinion on something and hearing MeJ's cavalier attitude makes me despise him even more. Not to mention the fact that nothing has changed since this interview :sigh:

Good piece from Quick.

The stubbornness of Blowshey ruined much of Dame's prime. :banghead2:

I love Jason, but this article highlights how disconnected he is with the inner workings of the franchise. He's a terrific writer and finds great stories, but Quick has no idea what's going on behind the scenes with regards to the direction of the team. He wrote this less than 12 hrs before Olshey was let go:

The growing theory is that if the investigation had turned up anything substantial, Olshey would have been fired weeks ago. Two agents who have dealt with Olshey said they believe Olshey is going to survive the ordeal, and are stunned that the organization has allowed his name to be sullied and dragged through the mud.

I'm not sure but wasn't it Quick a couple of weeks ago who said the investigation hadn't found anything substantial?

CJ already has said no way he comes off the bench.

Just trade him already.

I see CJ getting a ton of burn with the 2nd unit already. I don't understand why starting or not has anything to do with our success. When's he's the #2 option on the court he gets buckets easier than when he's #1. I see our second unit as going 1 on 5 with CJ or Simons doing all the dribbling. It won't work in the long haul IMO. I do like the idea of a bruiser with some swagger down low to offset our "softness." Maybe a trade is in order <shrug>

tbf he said on I think richmans podcast a couple weeks ago that he didn’t think olshey would survive. I’m guessing he doesn’t really have sources and is just throwing his own opinions out there lolz

What worked under Stotts doesn’t work for Billups, and it’s creating some uncomfortable moments for the holdovers. Stotts let guys play with freedom and rely on instinct. Billups demands more structure, and requires more discipline and thought. Under Billups, mistakes are no longer allowed to slide because of your salary, your tenure or your contract status. Billups has won a title as a player, and he says he knows the Blazers have to become more aggressive defensively than under Stotts, and they need to share the ball more than they did under Stotts. When the players stray from that vision, they are being called out. During play, during timeouts, in halftime speeches and in film sessions. And from the looks of it, the exchanges are not going well.

Stotts and Olshey poisoned this team. It's time to blow it up and let Billups and the new GM start over.

Quick mentions blowout losses but fails to mention blowout wins against Suns, Clippers, Grizzlies, Lakers, and Nuggets. You gotta look at whole picture.

Is there a way to read athletic articles without signing up lol

A lot of guys are overpaid. I’d say more are overpaid than not. You think guys like Hayward, Wiggins, and Porzingis are worth $30M a year?

While yes it's other people's money the reason fans should care is because there is a salary cap. While CJ is a quality player, what percentage of the salary pie goes to him on a championship roster is a reasonable question. I don't think Hayward or Porzingis are consistently healthy enough to provide good vale at their contract levels regardless of their production. I do like Wiggins as a versatile long defender with some offensive skills. 30M is rich but the W's didn't care and weren't affected as they were already over the line mostly from retaining Steph, Draymond and Klay.

Quick was slower than most to realize this was more of a roster issue than a coaching issue. Quick seemed to be keeping his source in the front office open until he knew Olshey was no longer helpful to him.

Chris Haynes just said on a twitter space that some players knew he was gone before yesterdays game. Quick likely knew this when he sent out his tweet last night and wrote this article.

Haynes on a twitter space chat: "A lot of players in the league do not like Olshey".

I'm sure that helped our free agency acquisitions.

Haynes on a twitter space chat:

"The Olshey situation played a role in McGowan leaving. He wanted a structure in the organization and wanted himself (McGowan) to control more of the public narrative."

"I don't give him credit for drafting Damian Lillard."

"Dame has NEVER had a title contending team around him. NEVER HAS"

"Neil was given opportunities to trade for a star, but he was scared they might be a rental and leave. They should've allowed Dame to be around that star player to be around Dame for a year. (Olshey) never gave Dame that opportunity."

"Neil was afraid to take a bold swing because if it fails, you have to look at yourself. He only made fringe moves."

Olshey's always like, "No NBA player wants to sign as a free agent to play in Portland." When the truth was nobody wanted to sign with his slimy ass. I'm fucking glad that Olshey is gone and I hope he never runs a team again or gets a broadcasting job where I have to see his smug face or listen to his self serving bullshit.

Haynes on a twitter space chat:

"Neil's main issue is how he treated he felt were beneath him."

"Dame wants to win. You can't put that Dame likes his teammates as a reason to not make moves. Dame wanted to win and it was on Neil to make those moves. My complaint that I (Haynes) said to Olshey was he never went for homeruns, always bunt singles."

"At this point, the Blazers have tried this for 6-8 years. You know how this story is going to end. Why not try something new? Ben Simmons is a talent that isn't identical to anyone else. At this point, everything has to be on the table. EVERYTHING. Right now, they need to go in a different path. There needs to be a shake up for sure."

Haynes on a twitter space chat:

"Had these allegations not come up, Neil would still be the GM, PERIOD."

"Everything in the organization is filtered through Neil. People saying there were no complaints about Neil prior to this are misleading."

"I haven't talked to Joe Cornin in 10 years because everything is filtered through Neil."

"People were worried if they talked, they would lose their job. Look at Kim Hughes."
