I don't believe Muhammed had any bad intentions. Not sure where you're getting that from.

And it's more like an essay about how the the characteristics of human beings caused many deaths in the name of God. Not about how Islam is accountable for death. You're taking my words out of context there, I said that deaths occured as a result of the creation of Islam. Not necessarily that Islam is accountable for the deaths. It's the people themselves and their lust for power and mistunderstandings of what God wants that are accountable for so many deaths.

Peg I think as a writer you've got to be accountable for your pen. It looks like you're on the road to writing a paper that shows a correlation between violence and this religion, but if you're not responsible it might also carry a tone of causality. Of course, my understanding is that this isn't your goal. I see your point: that peoples' understanding, perspective, and internalization of a religious message could be misconstrued, but I think you're dangerously close to making the example (Islam) responsible for this.

edit: I guess my point is: why islam? The same could be said for any religion, and I think your paper would be stronger (and lower the risk of misunderstandings) by expanding it that way.

I guess I wrote that the wrong way. I made a mistake there. Take out the word "some".

Also, for the millionth time, I understand that everything I'm saying about Islam could be said about most religions.

I see your guys' point there, and I completely agree with it. But, I didn't have much of a choice: we had to base our paper on certain subjects that we'd just learned, those being Islam or the Ancient Mexico/South America civilizations.

We're told to choose a certain generalization, one of those being "As human beings, we kill each other in the name of our God for anthropomorphic reasons." (Or something like that.) I felt that generalization was the one that was most interesting to me, and that I could write the most about, especially with all the assassinations and wars that occured during the reign of the Islamic Empire (c 600-700 AD). That's why I chose Islam to base my paper on.
 
Seems like you're being limited by your teacher then. Maybe this is a subject worth bring up to him/her? At the very least it might be worthwhile expanding your conclusion to say that the ideas talked in your paper can be applied to just about any religion (but I won't tell you how to write your paper
)

Yeah, I know. I don't like my teacher all that much, she treats us like high schoolers. I guess that's what I get for going to a community college. Hopefully, when I transfer (to a state college), my teachers will get better.

And I probably should have included that in my conclusion...but the paper is already written, due tomorrow, and I'm too tired and lazy to go back and change it.

And also, in my response to DADDY again, I actually did clarify in the paper that Muhammed's intentions were not to kill in the name of God (although that should be obvious anyways).

I hate generalizations about religion and history that try to come up with an easy explanations. Its always so much more complicated and deep than simply saying "religion caused this and this and this...". You have to realize that over time, religions have become associated with and amalgamated with cultures, traditions, economies, politics, and I've always looked at those as the real forces throughout history. Were the Crusades and all that violence really motivated by religion or were religions used as a rallying point by individuals that had land, economies, and politics on their mind? Was the slave trade really fueled by religion or was religion used as a justification for something that was inherently economic? Religion's has always been something effective at rallying and bringing people together, and something that effective is bound to be utilized for political or economic reasons over time.

He got some paper out and started reading from it:

"Pokémon is a media franchise owned by video game giant Nintendo and created by Satoshi Tajiri around 1995. Originally released as a pair of interlinkable Game Boy role-playing video games, Pokémon has since become the second most successful and lucrative video game-based media franchise in the world, behind only Nintendo's Mario series".

HOLD ON A MINUTE! WHAT THE ****?!!!

I stood up and slammed my hands on the desk "YOU GOT THAT FROM WIKIPEDIA.. YOU IDIOT". The idiot was in shock for a second and then responded: "Yeah.. So?". "Well WHAT PROOF IS THAT? YOU'VE COPIED SOMETHING FROM A WEBSITE, I FAIL TO SEE HOW THIS PROVES US AT POKECLIPSE WRONG" I shouted.. The class went quiet. He responded "I'm proving to you that Pokemon is made by Nintendo and was made by someone. Therefore it cannot be real".

Oh dear.. Oh dear... My anger was rising and I really wanted to punch this non-believer in the face. I had to keep my cool to look good, so I said

"Oh you silly boy.. For a start, you copied that from Wikipedia, one of the most unreliable sources on the internet. And, Nintendo has a portal of some sorts to get into the Pokemon universe, meaning they could have got the idea from that universe and marketed it to younger audiences. You're blinded by stupidity".

His response:"...Yeah, but it's not real". I rest my case. I sat down, and here's where it all starts to get bad. Everyone had heard us, and I suddenly became the laughing stock of the class. People were calling me gay and now the WHOLE school knows I believe in Pokemon. I can't believe this is happening... Why are people so stupid. Pokemon are real, if only they would open their eyes..

Anyways, I wasn't on yesterday because I was pretty much crying all day. I never thought my beliefs would cause me to actually get bullied. It's so wrong. dry.gif

That's general knowledge. And if he liked Pokemon that much, he would know that, and he wouldn't call them out.

Why would they have pokemon partners? Don't they know you get to keep 6 pokemon on your belt in pokeballs at all time?

They'd have their partner, but I'd just double team them with Hitmonchan and Dragonite...I wouldn't even mess around, beat them up quickly. Maybe use Charizard and Blastoise.
 
I wish I had a Ditto, so it would transform into Scarlett Johannsen, without clothes.
 
Not sure who in my family did it, but putting salsa in an emptied out pickle jar is a bad idea. You can never really wash out the pickle-ness, no matter how hard you try.

I guess that's what I meant, in a way. I had a negative bias against Islam because I had to do an essay about it. If it had been an essay about Christianity, I would have likely said the same thing about Christianity (if/when someone brought it up).

I mean, I didn't even bring up Islam. Chutney posted a website that had "Islam" in its name.

I dunno. Because there was nothing said about an essay. Regardless of what the site is about, I saw the word Islam, and thought about all the things that I had to read about and write about.

I had to write an essay about all of the deaths that occured in relation to Muslims. What would you expect me to say? "Wow, I love reading about Islam!! I just wrote an essay about all the people that were murdered after the passing of Muhammed, and it was sooo cool!!"
