Rangers, Callahan Talking Extension; Asking Price Per Dreger is $42M/7 Years

I bet you are wrong on that. Sather isn't going to re-sign him for 5 years if AV says I don't want him here.

I like 5 a lot more than 6 years. If we go 5 it is possible the last season is a wash. MAYBE even the last 2 seasons, it is possible. But he will be 30-34 on a 5 year deal, not mid 30's. And the cap will keep going up. So a 5.4 or so cap hit won't be awful for a guy who can be a 1st pair dman for 3 years at least IMO.

I guess, but either way they need another top pair guy to go with McD as they move forward and really become a SC caliberc team.

I do think they need a big physical dman still, but maybe that will be McIlrath.

McD/Girardi
Staal/McIlrath
Moore/Klein

Solid D IMO. Maybe add another solid vet to be there to work with McIlrath and for depth.

I think they need a top pair guy with more offense than either of those 2 provide, thats just my opinion. Girardi dosen't have much offensively obviously and Mc is a mixture. Plus Girardi to me is out of position alot and very turnover prone these days.

After watching his play this year and looking at the 42 mill 7 year deal he wants I can only deduce that cally was hit in the head with a lot more pucks than we thought.

71. You're on crack. The other defenseman for the most part on these teams are horrific compared to Girardi. It is one thing not to want to pay the guy a ton. It's another to just make crap up.

Sounds by all accounts that the Rangers have no interest in signing Callahan to that contract. Thank God. I said from day one that Miller is a bigger version of Callahan. I'm sure the Rangers know this. I grow tired of any Rangers forward who has some success here asking for the freakin moon with contracts. How does Callahan have the balls for ask for more money than McDonagh? Because he's played longer? I'd tell Callahan, you aren't nearly as good as McDonagh, and you aren't getting paid more than him stupid. You can't do that with Girardi because he's' had several years as one of the better shut down guys in the league. Doesn't matter if McDonagh is better than he is. Callahan has never been one of the better forwards in the game.

Still say

Etem and one of the Ducks first rounders for Cally.

The difference between McD and Cally is Cally is set to be a UFA and McD was set to be an RFA, BUT I agree dump. To me Cally is nuts, no other word to use.

He has ZERO O in his game right now. Sure he still hits and blocks some big shots, but zero O, and he thinks that is worth 6 mill per? Come on Cally wake up please. He should be 5 tops, and I rather upper 4's for him as a cap hit.

I get it is a back and forth negotiation, but Cally needs to be honest. 7 years 42 mill is nutso. If Sather goes anywhere near that I will be pissed. If Cally's cap hit is anything more than low 5's, and even that is too much really, I will be pissed.

I said at the start they could re-sign Cally and Girardi for 10-11 mill per total, we'll see on that.

Cally would be nuts NOT to ask for that type of contract. At the very least gives him room to negotiate, and at the very best Sather gets caught drunk and gives it to him.

And i chuckled (ha) when Chuck asked 71 to be factual about Girardi. MDZ, anyone?

Callahan is demonstrating what Drury did. That would be, he knows his doesn't have much longer with his style of play, getting paid is a top priority instead of winning. This is the kind of player the Rangers need to stop giving big contracts to. Especially when they have two replacements in Miller and Lindberg who can play right now in the NHL for next to nothing. They probably will be productive after 65 NHL games. Miller did a lot right. Just needs to stick on one line and get a few goals.

Dump, if Cally's priority was winning he'd be refusing to sign an extension and leave in the offseason :) let's not forget we haven't sniffed a SC in 20yrs and have only 1 ECF appearance in that time span.

though i think we're in the right direction and with some good moves we can be a legit SC contender.

And once again you make ridiculous off the wall comments 31. I was 100000000000000000000% honest about MDZ. I didn't like him as a player and never did. I said time after time I was biased against him as a player. I said I would have traded him two years ago when we could have gotten more. I said it was clear AV didn't like him. I said it was clear they had ZERO intention of re-signing him this summer.

Tell me what wasn't factual about my OPINION on MDZ? Because the way I see it I nailed it 100% fella.

Cally might get something close to what he's asking on the open market. For us, I think it would be crazy and would rather trade him, but let's not go nuts on Miller is the next Cally. He shows some potential and I like him, but he has so far to go to be Cally it's not even close right now. The passion, hitting, and hands around the net that Cally has always had is so many levels higher than what Miller has shown so far it shouldn't even be a discussion. Let's just hope Miller develops and becomes a good player before considering him as a replacement for anyone.

I am being factual about Girardi, he's very turnover prone these days. :)

That is your opinion, and that is cool. But he is not over 30 and he would not be a 3/4 on almost any other team. That is not factual my friend...:).

Ahhhh. I see you two are getting along.

Bottom line is Girardi is well worth 5 million a year. He's proven that. Callahan is on crack if he thinks he's a 5 million dollar player. He's never scored 30 goals once in his career and his passing sucks.

31. What do you think he's doing? Asking for a idiotic 7 year contract at 6 million a year because he wants to sign? Only a moron of unbelievable stupidity would think he could get that contract with his career production. Callahan and his agent basically asked for a trade with his contract demands. Use some common sense.

I don't take his 7/42 request any different than if it was double that b/c he was every right to ask for whatever the heck he wants and because to me he's not worth/getting anywhere near that much. I trust (fingers crossed) Sather either signs him for a lot less or trades him at the deadline.

The answer is always No until you ask, so it's in his best interest to ask for the moon in case Sather stupidly gives in. I don't see this as asking for a trade by any means, though indirectly it may end up being the result.

I agree with you on Girardi and Cally dump. To me Girardi is worth 5. I do not think Cally is. And no way do I think Cally is worth well over 5 or 6.

Would we really pay Cally 5.4 mill let's say for 20 or so goals, some hits, and leadership. Not a smart move IMO. Cally is a 4 and change mill per player. I would go 4.5 or 4.7 tops, and that is because he is our captain. Ideally he would be a low 4's player cap hit wise.

Its pretty obvious that the rangers will sign girardi shortly and callahan will be traded somewhere sometime between now and the trade deadline. And my prediction is that Nash will end up with the C on the front of his shirt

I'd much rather pay Callahan 5m than Girardi 5.5m. Girardi is not worth more than 4.5. Callahan is already the captain and although he's having a down year, is still good for another 4-5 years and should rebound going forward. Put him on a good 3rd line and let him do his thing. Girardi has logged huge minutes over the last 5 years out of necessity due to the injuries and lack of overall depth, but that dosen't mean he's a #1 talent wise. With the cap space they have they need to slot him as a #3 and upgrade for someone with McDonagh. And when you factor in the abuse from the Tortorella years that makes him closer to a 35 yr old than 30.

I couldn't disagree more 71. It is MUCH easier to fill what Cally adds than it is to fill what Girardi adds in my humble opinion. We'll see how it shakes out.

I certainly wouldn't trade Girardi now, being they're in playoff position, but I'd just be wary of giving him 5-6 years, that's all. Nothing against him, he's a great teammate and hard worker. I just think he's aged quicker because of how he's been used. Callahan isn't adding much right now so maybe it's easier to quantify dealing him, but it just seems like it would hurt the morale of the team seeing the C leave with the playoffs around the corner. If they could get a Dwight King type with a prospect from LA that would work, but I don't think the Kings would give up an RFA whose production is close to RC's. Maybe a vet like Morrow and a top prospect from StL would be ok.

Honestly, I think Pouliot has been better than Callahan this season. Even Pierre hinted at that during the Islander game.

I am not saying they should or will deal either. I agree with you when you say it doesn't send a great message to deal your captain at the trade DL. I personally would be surprised if we dealt him in season. The only way I can see it is if we get an amazing deal that includes a top 9 forward returning OR they already have a 2nd deal lined up to add another top 9 forward.

I also agree with you that it is a risk to re-sign Girardi for 5 or 6 years. I am just not sure we have much of a choice. He plays such an important role for us. Losing him would be a huge blow I think. How do we replace his 20 + mpg on the 1st pair? That is a very large hole. I would aim to keep the deal at 5 years instead of 6. Mid 5's on the cap hit. And go in knowing the last season could be a wash. I would feel much better with a 5 year deal instead of 6 year deal.

So we agree on a lot of what you just said.

It'll be interesting to see if Girardi accepts either proposal before the DL or waits and explores other options.

I'm surprised Callahan has been so poor, his injury was awhile ago plus it seems like he'd do well in an uptempo system. Maybe he's not really happy there anymore.

He will accept a deal. We won't keep Girardi if not re-signed by the DL. I bet he signs soon. Before or right after the Olympics.
