Up in the Air - 9/10 - great film. really liked anna kendrick's performance.

Alice in Wonderland - 6/10 - saw this in 3d great visuals and the girl playing Alice was pretty good, that bout the only positives. I normally like Johnny Depp, but he was pretty bad in this imo.

Shutter Island - 8/10 - Fantastic plot but not as good as Scorsese's previous films

Precious - 7/10 - Kinda overrated but very good performances

(500) Days Of Summer - 8/10

Movie was actually really funny, and had a couple of the funnier lines I've seen in a movie in a while.

That was great movie too. The guy did a very good job as well. Not a typical romantic comedy. Should have won the golden globe over the hangover

Shes out of my league - 8.4/10 yes, a (.4)

She's Out Of My League - 8/10

I have to agree that the movie was incredibly funny.

The Departed is a remake of Infernal Affairs.

I know it is.

Scorsese is one of my favorite directors, but he literally stole shots (along with the storyline, obviously) directly from Infernal Affairs. He used the same camera angles, the same editing style, etc.

Why? I don't know.

Shawshank Redemption: 10/10
Great movie. If you really get into it, like I did, you really feel like you are a part of the movie.

Cast Away: 7/10
Meh. It was okay. I think a bit overrated.

just got around to watching fargo and i loved it. i thought the performances were outstanding, the writing was o.k but the quality of the performances compensated for any holes in the film.

i give it a 9.5/10

Ninja Assassin -- 6/10 -- too much wire work and CGI to make it an interesting MA movie.

Shawshank Redemption: 10/10

This is one of the few times the movie is better then the book. It is one of my all time fav. movies.

Anyone seen Green Zone?

I'd give it 6.5/10

An Iraq film about the truth behind WMD's.

A rather pointless exercise this many years later, but there were some good scenes that kept it entertaining enough.

The Road -- 7/10 -- not much happens but what little occurs is intense. Every bit as miserable as the novel.

That is disappointing, speeds. I've heard great things about The Road.

Just going through the list of old time classics and AFI top 100 film list, I just watched The Deer Hunter for the first time. Very intense movie, and definitely can see why it's great. What I really enjoy doing is going back and watching all of the best received and/or classic (that includes non-American) films of a particular decade and trying to figure out what people must have been thinking at the time.

The '70s are fairly obvious, but the '90s are still somewhat of a mystery. Both decades seemed to be equally angry and self-reflective, and I'm not quite sure why. The '70s had Vietnam and a whole lot of upheaval, and the '90s had, what... the Gulf War, grunge music and reality TV?

Anyways I give the Deer Hunter a solid 9.2/10. Pretty long movie and is not for everyone.

Its not a bad movie its just slow and grim.

Mortensen puts on a great performance as well. Oscar nomination snub, IMHO.

Last movie I watched was Changeling. It was a lot better than I thought it would be. I'll give it a 9/10.

ZMD (Zombies of Mass Destruction) -- 6/10 -- some genuinely funny moments in an otherwise bland B-zombie film. The Iranian father character is almost unintelligible--no surprise he is a relative of the director and an exec. producer.

Not as over emotional and sappy as I thought it was going to be. Not as good as the Danish version either but the performances are rock solid. I never liked the Spidey kid, but he plays his role pretty well in this. The plot is foreseeable though and it's nothing new from a character study on post-traumatic war effects.

Romeo & Juliet, What's Eating Gilbert Grape? He was exceptional in those roles as well. But I agree.

In all fairness, there aren't many amazing 'acteurs' nowadays (especially in his age range), and most big names get pop for the buck.

Romeo & Juliet is a shameless horrible film

While there are no Jack Nicholson's, Al Pacino's or Robert DeNiro's of this generation there are many good actors out there still today.

A few to name.

Sean Penn
Daniel Day-Lewis
Philip Seymour Hoffman
Edward Norton
Gary Oldman
Forest Whitaker

Daniel Day-Lewis is especially good. Maybe the best actor I've ever seen.

If he's the best actor you have ever seen, possibly...then how is he not a Nicholson, Pacino, or De Niro? Are you talking in terms of popularity?

And you left Denzel off you're list :]

I'm done trying to find flaws in Scorsese's masterpieces. Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and Casino are all 10/10's for me.

Casino and Taxi Driver are the only 10s from that list. Goodfellas is probably a 9 and 8 for raging bull. Imo.

Taxi Driver was probably his best movie though.

Wow Raging Bull only an 8? That's ridiculous. Raging Bull is definitely Scorcese's best film and is one of the greatest character studies EVER done on film. Robert DeNiro's finest work as an actor. Taxi Driver is close and I can see why some people like it more, because it gives you some closure unlike Raging Bull. But if not for one of the greatest performances ever put on screen I would put Taxi Driver above Raging Bull.

I find it hard to take you seriously now though since you think Casino is a better film than Raging Bull.

I meant of this generation. I was trying to refer to his comment about actors in Leo's age range.

I think Denzel is overrated because he tends to play one of two character archetypes, and neither one has a great amount of depth. I hate to say this, but I think a lot of people overrate him because he is black.

There are several black actors who have given better individual performances than he ever has.

Forest Whitaker in The Last King of Scotland & Ghost Dog, Don Cheadle in Hotel Rwanda, etc.

Has anyone here seen The Wire? I'd even argue that Andre Royo and Michael K. Williams have more raw talent than Denzel.

Denzel may only play 1 or 2 roles, but he can carry a film so incredibly well.

Austin Powers - Spy who shagged me - 7/10 Still lmfao

So can many of the actors I said. Hell Will Smith carries a lot of films doesn't mean all the films he's making are good.

Films of Denzel's that are average or just plain terrible.

- The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3
- Deja Vu
- The Manchurian Candidate
- The Preacher's Wife
- Virtuosity
- Ricochet
- Mississippi Masala
- Heart Condition
- For Queen and Country
- Power
- Carbon Copy

The Book of Eli looks horrible, too.

Devil in a Blue Dress is greatly underrated, though.

He was good in Deja Vu...it was just an average movie. At least, IMO. Same with Book of Eli.

And Will Smith... Bad Boys III in about two years :] That'll look great on blu ray!

Brokeback Mountain - I've been wanting to watch this for a long time and holy shit. I was blown away. The performances were amazing, Heath Ledger especially. Ennis was one of the best characters i've ever seen. The subtle things in the film were key (ie the shirts) and i plan on watching it again to pick up on more. Much better than Crash imo.

Btw to the guy who was listing best actors, i think Ledger and Dicaprio should be included. Most ppl disagree with dicaprio but he has giving too many great performances (what's eating gilbert grape, the basketball diaries) to be constantly underrated by ppl who still see him as a 'teen heartthrob' type

I think that Dicaprio has turned into a swell actor, and he usually plays in movies that are particularly good. I do not believe he is better than anyone on that list of people I named, and I think he has yet to find that career defining role, such as DeNiro did in Taxi Driver and Raging Bull or Day-Lewis did in There will be Blood and My Left Foot.
