It would suck if Utah got him essentially for nothing. Hopefully Boston/Portland are smarter than that.
Exactly. If that happens I'll be frustrated, which will annoy people. However, Neil could find many ways to offer a good package (including a pick) for Crowder while saving BOS $3.3M-$6.8M in cap space, as I've outlined so far.

Thing with Crowder is that he's a better all around player. He's MUCH better at getting to the rim and finishing, and he can handle the ball in the open court. He is a better passer and less turnover prone.

He's also more consistent of a shooter, which means teams will respect his shot. Therefore, he's a better floor spacer.

And there are things Aminu is better at than Crowder (rebounding, shot blocking) as well. Point is, unless Crowder shoots like he did last year (the only year he ever shot as well) the upgrade isn't enough to justify giving up a first round pick and a young player like Vonleh.

Yeah, things tend to get a little bi-polar here. At the end of the season, everyone had to go except Lillard, McCollum and the Nurk. Since then, people have decided that actually we have a ton of assets and Olshey should be parlaying them into valuable players.

When it comes to fandom, anger fades and hope springs eternal. As it should be!

Maybe the most accurate statement about this offseason. It's comical, really.

One caution about Crowder: he's really only had one season where he shot above average from outside. His career % is 34.5. If we give up Vonleh and a first, we better be sure we're not just getting a slightly better version of Aminu.

Crowders shot selection is questionable at times. It got much better this year, he still took questionable shots with the Celtics. But not as often as previous years.

He is still developing. Got better by the year the last three years that he started getting playing time. I suppose last season is what can be expected going forward.

My idea:

Utah needs a wing that can do some of the things Hayward did for them. Dante Exum is finally playing well for them in SL but kind of duplicates Ricky Rubio in that he's a big defensive guard who can't score much. We could use such a guard, and conversely Shabazz Napier duplicates (it's like a shitty old photocopy of a photocopy but) Lillard in that he's a scorer first and everything else last. So how about:

I can't imagine Utah jumping up and down about it, but I'm betting that their coach can get Turner to be more like he was in Boston than we could.
(Burks is a throw-in that we would throw-out. He's a bust as far as I can see.)

Burcs is not that bad, but very injury prone. It will be a problem to pay Exum next year. We have Vonleh too. We dont have the money.

Why do we think Vonleh is gonna get so much $$? Did Plums? Who's better? :dunno:

I definitely thought Plumlee was going to get more money.... I guess we'll see what happens.

But in terms of value on the open market, Vonleh would definitely appeal to me more than Plumlee. I don't see Plums really taking any drastic leaps in his career. Vonleh is only 21 (almost 22) and his numbers have improved every year (not drastically, but they are improving.)

Plumlee is 27. He is what he is. I think he'd be a great backup for Nurk, but as a starter he's just really lacking in a lot of areas. I think Vonleh will grow into a very serviceable starting forward.

I'm not sure how much Vonleh gets on the restricted free agent market next year. Money is drying up and these shorter term contracts teams are throwing out this year makes me think they'll be slightly more judicious with their cap space. Some team might throw some 2 year 20 million dollar deal at him and I would expect us to match it unless he gets outplayed by the rookies.

Restricted free agents usually have small markets and are the last ones to sign, I wouldn't draw any conclusions yet. There are quite a few RFAs that haven't signed. Noel for example. Actually have any of them signed outside of Porter? Nets didn't sign Crabbe and Tyler Johnson until after the first wave of free agency. Teams don't want to tie up their cap space on a maybe.

As far as investment goes, Vonleh is a better one than Plumlee. Plumlee is what he is. Vonleh is 5-6 years younger with a higher ceiling, with a profile that fits the modern game better.

That's not entirely true. The raw numbers have gone up slightly due to increased minutes, and I know the sample size is small, but he had his best per 36 numbers and best advanced stats his rookie year. His second year, he had pretty awful stats. So, last year's modest improvement isn't much to get excited about.

Yes, he played better with Nurk (everybody did), but this is his 4th year in the league and a contract year for him. He REALLY needs to show some significant improvement this year. It's not like he hasn't had his chances. Stotts has started him a total of 97 games over the last two seasons. Right now, he's a solid rebounder who doesn't hurt you on defense, but gives you almost nothing on offense. We REALLY need 2-way players at the forward positions, but unfortunately, right now, Vonleh is not one.

If nothing else, Collins and Swanigan should push him - they will either push him to get better, or will push him out the door.

BNM

My only hope for Vonleh is that some other GM sees something in him so we can get maybe a pick for him. As far as I'm concerned he's a big guy with no discernible basketball instincts.

Not sure I get the hype for Crowder. BOS wouldn't be so hellbent on getting an upgrade for him if he were so good. His 3pt shot is only slightly more reliable than Moe's. And his defense is vastly overstated.

His contract is awesome, but that shouldn't be the sole reason for us to get him.
