I haven't seen 21 grams, but I heard it was good from friends.

The rest i would recommend (at the moment, anyways..) have already been said.

i'm not one for the main stream but the movie won the oscar for best picture and kevin spacey won for best actor. Allan Ball is also a genius and he has written other award winning stuff like Six Feet Under. Come on, Sam Mendez was a directorial genius, framing and lighting were off the charts. Watch it again.....ur way off.

Who said you have to analyze the movie frame by frame. But when you leave the theartre u should be able to answer the question, "why did you like the movie?''

I watched that movie last year in media studies. It's so confusing at the beginning/middle.

Its one thing to like mindless entertainment now and then, but if you are gonna recommend a movie, its in my humble opinion that it should have some substance. "Click" just dosen't cut it. By the way, does it hurt when ur cleaning ur ears out with ur car keys?

You'd make more sense if there was an objective standard for "good." But there isn't: it all boils down to personal preferences.

Everything I know about Waterworld is from a reference by the Simpsons:

-Milhouse plays "Waterworld" the arcade game. His character walks a couple steps and has to insert 40 more quarters to continue (I was told this was referring to how much the movie cost).
 
I just went and saw the Departed, and that movie was pretty friggin' good. Nicholson was (as usual) excellent, Martin Sheen played his first minor background guy role that he does so well since he was President, and Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon were both great at what they did. Not only that, but it kept you interested right up to the last frame (which wasn't that interesting).

Other than that, the actual roles of the characters are remarkably true to life, and aside from the therapist, the accents are just perfectly done. Good times.

Aside from that, I'm going to give a shout out to a History of Violence (which I just saw again for the first time in a while) and Porco Rosso, if you're into anime.

Ahh so that is what the scene is about.

I laughed because of the effort to put in 40 quarters take a step and then he proceeds to put in more quarters.

Great pick, it really is an extremely underrated flick.
 
Thanks. Another movie I recommend: The Usual Suspects. Watching it yesterday made me remember how great it truly is.
 
8mm

TWO that some of you may not have seen:

8mm with Nicolas Cage.
Lot of critics hated it but I thought it was cool.
Cage goes in the porn underworld trying to find a guy who created a snuff film - which is basically a filmed killing of this innocent girl. It's a dark movie and intense. James Gandolfini plays one of the bad guys, as does Peter Stormare. Check it out if you like DARK subject matter.

In The Company Of Men.
This is a black comedy about 2 corporate guys who trick a deaf girl - they both go after her just so they can dump her, it's their way of getting back at the world. The movie is so simple yet so compelling.

I agree with Shapecity, American Beauty was really overrated. And I am someone who likes movies about characters, movies with no "action", indies, etc. It basically was a hollow movie about nothing. If you want to see a movie about characters with no action, that is actually good, check out "In THe Bedroom" or "YOu can count on me".

Crash was another movie that won a lot of Oscars and I thought was so overrated. Okay, we get it, everyone's a little bit racist.... wow, 2 hours to tell us that??

How does Taxi Driver, Heat and Goodfellas not have Oscars but Crash and American Beauty DO have Oscars?
 
i saw jarhead on somebody's list and if they like that, they would love "Full Metal Jacket"

I think you are wrong. I believe there is an objective standard for good, and i outlined them above. Something has to be creative and original, while maintaining solid diologue and storytelling. Something of course can be totally off the wall and still be good, but you can't say a movie was good because u liked it. Thats just ridiculous. You liked it because you liked it, thats fine, but there are criteria that class movies better then others. I can't say that Battlefield earth was a good movie cause i liked it. It was terribly acted, written and directed. I can say I liked it because i'm a douche, but thats different.
 
I don't think the purpose of the thread was to list your top all time movie lists. I approached it as a thread to recommend movies I've recently watched, or some uncommon movies most people never heard of.

I'm not saying Click is award worthy, but it's a movie I watched a few days ago, and it was decent enough to recommend. Same goes for the Break Up.
They were good for a few laughs and the underlying message in Click is admirable.

Well, Rush Hour 1 and Rush Hour 2 are both great movies. If you want to have a good laugh mixed with some action, these movies are perfect

fair enough....I recently watched jackass 2. Didn't fit my criteria but I LOVED IT.

Crash reminded me of a movie called "Grand Canyon"
American History X was a better film than Crash, too. It had a great performance from Ed Norton.

i liked american history X but Crash is at a different level of appreciation for me, its one of those flawless movies in my mind. crash kinda reminds me of magnolia,both movies connect unrelated characters along a similiar theme, i.e. race is in crash.
