So if this doesn't work out, do we go after David Lee? He's a similar player to Millsap. I bet NY doesn't match if we offer him the same contract we're offering Paul. My guess is, that is plan D.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think thee clock starts until the Jazz are present wth the offer which I read is tomorrow.

Haha. The Jazz should "delay" the receiving of the offer.

"Sir, are you gentlemen ready to read the terms of the offer?"

"Um, no, no, just give us a few more days to pull ourselves together."

All the way to the next offseason.

I thought the offer was sent to the Jazz first. Oh well. Clock to start soon or something.

Ric Bucher chimes in:

The big worry w/Millsap (or any Jazz player): their success is tied to the system. Always risky to sign away a guy. Exs: HEisley, SAnderson.

Ric Bucher chimes in:

Well, Bucher, a quick perusal of Eisley's and Anderson's PERs would have revealed that they weren't very good. So Hollinger has cracked that "Utah system" code.

BLAZINGGIANTS chimes in:

Does the Utah system matter, since Utah will match? Portland got Utah to spend big on their own FA, limiting their ability to do much else for the next several years. And they are forcing Utah to move Boozer.

Will they match?

"They haven't given me any indication they will match,'' Simmons said. "They have said publicly this and that, but I don't know.''

I woud think the clock starts as soon as Millsap signs it

irregardless of any Utah (or any team's) stall tactics...

Does anyone else think Utah is going to have a hard time trading Boozer?

He is on the last year of a contract, and they want cap space in return, so he would not be the classic expiring contract. He has shown a lack of loyalty to his teams in the past. Who wants to trade their cap space for a one year shot at a PF who may leave? If Chicago isn't having any--who else would be?

I'm starting to wonder if Utah can even find a trading partner.

Jason Quick said there is nothing behind the Boozer to Chicago talks (with Hinrich coming to Portland).

Yahoo Sports also reported the same thing.

Detroit just signed CV.

Maybe Miami using Jermaine?

I don't see much of a market for Boozer. Utah knew Millsap would draw interest and if reports are true that Millsap is their #1 priority, why is Boozer still on the roster?

They aren't going to bother to trade Boozer. They are going to match, go over the cap for a year until Boozer and some other contracts run out, and pinch it for a year. That is what I would do.

It's a lot different when you're actually the one paying.

It's easy to say "Oh, it's not that bad, they'll match" from an outsiders perspective, but that money is a hell of a lot to pay, especially for someone who's not really a star. They will match it only if they can dump Boozer for cap, which they probably can.

Interesting who is a free Agent in 4 years?

I doubt that has anything to do with it. With a 4 year deal, we have 2 years of Millsap under the current CBA. The 2011-2012 season will be sacrificed to the lock-out/labor war. That leaves 1 year under the new CBA for the team to evaluate how they are going to restructure the roster. Same logic applies to Roy and LMA.

Kevin O'Conner Gm of the Jazz says they will match. It's what I would do. When the salary cap lowers next year the Jazz are going to be over anyhow, so they won't be able to add any talent. Boozer will be hitting the road then. Who will play power forward then? They will match Millsap.

I agree, but teams don't always behave logically where $$$ are at stake.

3-team trade:

All parties recind signing of Millsap;

Boozer to Bobcats

Travis & Webster to Utah (Utah signs Millsap)

G.Wallace to Portland

Portland gets G.Wallace for Travis & Webster!

Bayless/Blake/Koponen (Mills on I.R.)
Roy/Rudy
G.Wallace/Batum/Cunningham
LMA/Gooden/Pendergraph
Oden/Pryz

If I remember correctly, Charlotte is looking for a center so they can move Emeka to the four.

The only team, IMO, that could make a play for Boozer is Miami.

Nice idea, but there is no way the BobCats take on Boozer. First, because Larry Brown would hate him. Second, the team is for sale and is more likely to be trying to cut payroll now, rather than next summer.

What impact does the "hefty signing bonus" have on the luxury tax issue for the Jazz? If it all counts this year when the Jazz are already at $73MM (if I remember right), then it might be a solid "toxic" contract. Anyone know how that works? Do we know what the $ amount of the hefty bonus is?

Edit: disregard. The deseretnews article covers this. Apparently the bonus is spread out according to a "complex formula".

I was thinking of places Utah could trade Boozer if they matched Millsap's deal and thought of GS as a possible destination. Turns out they have a few pieces we could use. Here's an idea:

Monta/Turiaf to Portland (total incoming salary: $15.140mil; total outgoing salary: $7.6mil; we'd have to renounce the Euros).

Blake/Outlaw (or Webster) to Utah. (total incoming salary: $7.6mil; total outgoing salary: $12.323mil; they can get under the tax level immediately).

Boozer to GS (total incoming salary: $12.323mil; total outgoing salary: $15.140mil; we can throw in Webster if needed).

A look at our roster if this happens:

Starters: Ellis/Roy/Batum/Aldridge/Oden

Bench: Bayless/Rudy/Turiaf/Przybilla.... Webster.

That roster gets you to the WCFs easily.
