I'd be surprised if he is. It makes Przybilla more expendable right away. Millsap could be the one dealt next year, when he's no longer BYC.

I guess Aldridge could be dealt, if a really good point guard were available. But that eventuality seems pretty unlikely. Przybilla being dealt would be the most likely thing, in my opinions.

I stole this from a poster on Realgm.

It's how the deal could be structured. 14,300,000 is how much Millsap would be paid the first year. However, since the Jazz will be over the tax, they will also pay an extra 8,000,000 which is Millsap's cap hit. 14,300,000 + 8,000,000 = 22,300,000 for Millsap if the Jazz match.

I'm confused as to why the paycheck would be $14.3k in the first year. Seems like first year paycheck would be $6,425,000 + 6,300,000 = $12,725,000. Am I missing something?

How would people feel about Aldridge + Bayless for Williams + Millsap? [assuming you could work out the salaries].

Or, Aldridge + Rudy for Williams and Millsap?

I think the team would be better.

The paycheck would be the full amount (they used the wrong wording), but the cap implications would be spread out.

Would Utah have to pay the full bonus up front, plus the luxury tax on the cap part? That would be even worse for them.

A starting lineup of:

Deron Williams
Brandon Roy
Nicolas Batum
Paul Millsap
Greg Oden

...is a title contender next year and for the next decade, at least.

Of course. You're giving up your 2nd best and 7th best player for Utah's top 2 (or 2 of their top 3).

I think you underestimate Aldridge and the little things that upset him, but to each his own.

I've read the article about his trust issues and how he's easily turned off. I still don't think he'll see the team bringing in another big man (which was clearly not their first choice) as a betrayal, but as a desire to get something good in the free agent market.

Also, whether or not he takes it as a slight, it makes no difference unless it angers him so much that he wouldn't sign an extension in Portland despite Portland being able to offer him the most. I don't think he'd be that angry.
 
If the signing bonus doesn't count against the cap then I see them matching. Haven't they already said they're going to match any offer?

Signing bonus counts against the cap, but divided evenly each year of the contract.
 
It would be very shortsighted of Utah to not match this offer. They take a hit this year, but get their starting PF locked up for several seasons at a fraction (60%-ish) of what they've been paying Boozer all along.

If they resolve to take the one year hit, they're absolutely in a strong bargaining position. They can say take it or leave it. They can use Boozer's expiring contract (and ability to play well) at the trade deadline and get under the LT and not have to pay it.

That may or may not be true (I don't have the energy to check it) but it does not address LIQUIDITY. I'm not sure that the Jazz have $6m extra just sitting around.

Absolutely. I think if they can get rid of Boozer's salary there is a 0% chance they don't match with Millsap.

It's actually why I think they will give OKC value to take Boozer for a year.

If they dump Boozer, they'll match. That's what it comes down to. I'm not as sold that they can do that as others, because they knew that this issue was looming and knew 10 days ago that Boozer wasn't opting out, so presumably they've been investigating Boozer deals and have yet to find one.

They may ultimately opt to stick with Boozer.

But, they don't really get into lux tax hell unless they keep Boozer past the deadline. They can match Millsap's offer now, and explore Boozer deals later on in the year.
