Yes you can. Essentially, Millsap is worth 20 million this year. (After lux tax)
That doesn't quite answer my question of how we can offer him $11.9M this year (signing bonus included) when we only have $7.7M or so available under the cap... What provision allows that and why?

As for the 2nd part, we're not anywhere close to the luxury tax, are we? Or does the signing bonus get treated as a luxury tax item regardless of where the overall payroll sits?

This seems like a big piece of the equation that isn't adding up...

The signing bonus counts towards the cap, split over the four years. Essentially, the caphold of signing Millsap will be 7.7 Million. (6.2 Million + 1.5 from the split signing bonus) - 6 Million/4 Years.

We're not close to the luxury tax. Utah would have to pay 11.6 Million + 7.7 Million which is Millsap's caphold.

The signing bonus is spread out over 4 years for cap purposes but paid in full to Millsap in 7 days.

Guess this is what made it toxic:

The Trail Blazers four-year, $32 million offer to Utah power forward Paul Millsap is front-loaded with what is essentially a $10.3 million signing bonus that must be paid within the first seven days of the contract being approved, according to the player's agent.

If Utah doesn't match, the Blazers will pay Millsap $6.2 million the first year, $6.2 million the second year, $6.7 million the third year and $7.2 million the fourth year. The deal comes with an up-front payment of a $5.6 million signing bonus and $4.7 million of the contract's first year salary.

Yup. Basically, can Utah come up with $10 million in two weeks (7 days to match, 7 days to pay up)? That might be easy for you or me, but not for some of your poorer/less liquid owners.

Even if they can come up with the cash, that's a pretty stiff blow to even a multi-millionaire's wallet in the short term. I was pretty sure Utah would match, but now I'm starting to seriously wonder.

I don't know how many people caught this...but:

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705316264/Jazz-finances-not-quite-so-bleak.html

Read that. The Jazz are essentially being handed 10 Million.

That's true, so they can come up with the cash, in terms of liquidity. It doesn't diminish the financial blow, though. That money was surely already expected (roughly, the exact figure may not have been known) so is already factored into their supposed inability to afford both Boozer and Millsap.

$11 million cash upfront for a back-up PF. Totally worth f**king Brandon Roy over worth.

;)

Have you considered that the two events might not be coupled?

Have you considered that Leiweke has been mandated to make the Blazers "break even" in two years?

Yes, and as I said, that seems like a perfectly reasonable mandate.

Now, explain the connection between Roy's 5th extension year and Millsap's contract, given that Millsap's contract ends before Roy's 5th extension year.

Expain the luxury tax implications in two years due to Millsap's contract as a back-up, regardless of Roy/LMA getting 4 years versus 5 years. Also explain how extending Oden/Batum/Rudy/Bayless at that time keeps the team under the cap.

Short answer is, what does it matter to this discussion? You are the one tying Millsap and Roy's contract situation together. I'm saying they are independent.

Yes, it appears they'll be in danger of paying luxury tax in a couple of years. Maybe they have a plan to do that, maybe they have a plan to avoid doing that. I certainly don't know.

What is clear is that if the issue with Roy's contract is the 5th year, it can't possibly have anything to do with Millsap, since his contract ends before then.

From NBA_Rumors_News
Millsap's representative does not believe the Jazz will match the trailblazers offer.

Hmm... it's almost enough to get a guy's hopes up.

Almost.

It's hard, as a Blazer fan, to get one's hopes up.

A little piece of bookkeeping confirmed by a team source: to make the Millsap offer, the Blazers renounced their rights to last year's players Shavlik Randolph, Michael Ruffin, Raef LaFrentz, and geriatric all-stars Luke Schenscher, Voshon Lenard, Chris Dudley and Detlef Schremph to eliminate those players' cap holds. Should Utah match the Millsap offer, the Blazers can "un-renounce."

We still had the rights to Detlef and Schenscher?

That's just plain stupid.

It's not stupid. It's happened a few times in recent memory that a team has re-signed and traded one of their un-officially retired players to trade to help make salaries match.
