Re: OT: Jerry Buss has a few days to live...dying of cancer

I always thought his self-made story was pretty interesting.

I don't have much else to say I guess, except death comes for us all :dunno:

Re: OT: Jerry Buss has a few days to live...dying of cancer

Ya, he seems like an awesome owner.

Re: OT: Jerry Buss has a few days to live...dying of cancer

Pretty much all of us hate the Lakers for rivalry reasons. When it comes to life or death I think most of us on here don't want to see anything like career threatening injuries or death happen to anyone.

Re: OT: Jerry Buss has a few days to live...dying of cancer

yeah..as much as I hate the Lakers..he was a gret owner, first class guy

Re: OT: Jerry Buss has a few days to live...dying of cancer

That sucks. I'm going to kind of a living wake in about hour myself actually. I have a friend that is going into hospice care shortly. Sad.

Always liked him on High Stakes Poker. Dont know much about him but the respect his peers talk about him with it sounds like he was a class act.
Sad to hear of this.

Re: OT: Jerry Buss has a few days to live...dying of cancer

Imagine the family fights that will determine Laker moves from now on.

Re: OT: Jerry Buss has a few days to live...dying of cancer

It would not surprise me to see the lakers eventually sold (for a LARGE sum of money..like well over a billion).

Or somehow Phil Jackson comes in and becomes part of an ownership (since he's bonin' the owners daughter)

I hardly ever get to say Fixed for you.

really? with my track record?

Re: OT: Jerry Buss has a few days to live...dying of cancer

You may be good, but I'm watching for my big chance. Beware!

Re: OT: Jerry Buss has a few days to live...dying of cancer

About 10 years ago, I was at Blondies in NYC watching a Blazers game when I spotted Jerry watching Lakers/Suns with two very young women. Then I overheard a third on the phone telling another woman to come because "Jerry's Here." The place was mostly empty and I introduced myself, told him I hated the Lakers and that I thought they'd lose in the playoffs to the Spurs that year (and they did.). Nonetheless, he bought drinks for my friend and I. As Nik said, death comes for all of us. Doesn't matter if we wish it or not.

Re: OT: Jerry Buss has a few days to live...dying of cancer

As a Lakers' fan, this sucks. Whether you're a Laker hater or fan, I think its hard to argue against him being one hell of an owner.

Hopefully his final days are peaceful.

Re: OT: Jerry Buss has a few days to live...dying of cancer

Always a great owner. The NBA lost a great owner when he stepped down

Re: OT: Jerry Buss has a few days to live...dying of cancer

sounds like he passed away this morning. Cancer sucks man

Merge with my post dammit! I kid I kid

Man that is sad news! Probably one of the greatest owners in basketball.

That is very sad. But Jim Buss has been running that front office for the last few years. I don't really think they miss a beat organization wise anyway.

I never hated on Dr. Buss. I admired how willing he was to always have a winning team. He will definitely be missed.

RIP Jerry. I hate the Lakers, but as everyone else said you have to respect Buss. Ownership is such a crucial aspect of the quality of the league that's often overlooked. The Lakers are probably still in good hands but its never good to lose a great owner.

They already are missing a beat with the clusterfuck that's going on right now.

A family story about my uncle and Buss

My Uncle is a surgeon in NY and would sometimes play poker at some friends house who would have a big game once a month. 10K buy in. My uncle gets invited and told that Buss would be there so he goes, excited to play in the same game. 10 minutes into the night Buss suggests they up the buy in to 100K and needles those who didn’t want to change. (I should mention that the poorest people playing likely had 25mil). My uncle played and lost one buy in and quit. Buss ended up slightly and some tennis pro (my uncle would not tell me who) ended up the big winner up over 400K.

This isn't the time to critique Buss' performance, but for many years I have thought that the Lakers have a terrible record of trades, considering the Paul Allen-like advantages they never use. They have had poor depth for years because they always depend upon a couple of highly-paid stars who were attracted purely by the glitzy media center angle. It's been going on at least since 1979, when he became owner.

But this isn't the place to say that he should have been much better, so I'll be silent.

Imagine the tantrums the conservative Oregonian would throw if Paul Allen had any discoverable fun-loving side. Allen lives in paranoia of those ass journalists and the drone fans who follow the paper's every command.
