So, my job here in Florida is about a week away from being finished and I'll be heading back into the hairy arms of Portland for an awkward embrace (yeah, I just equated Portland to the "creepy" uncle archetype).

I bought a car and found a room to call my own in a duplex in Ladd's Addition and got prorated rent for half of september. I have no real deadline of when I need to be there and can take my time on the trip, thus enjoying cities, scenery, quirky Americana, and maybe some old friends on my way. Anyone have suggestions of places to see along the way? The Tang needs some help (and I will never use The Tang in third person again. I swear. ).

Nevada City California...my old stomping grounds in the Sierra foothills...check out the middle fork of the Yuba river, have a nice dinner at Friar Tucks..live music all over one of the only two historically preserved California cities without neon, etc...Lola Montez theatre, American Victorian Museum, Nevada City Winery....great little town in the hills.

Thanks. I'll look into every suggestion I get here along with suggestions from friends. After that I'll plan a route and loosely stick to it. I think I want to spend the first night in New Orleans. But I could go to Memphis instead. Anyone?

I'd pass on New Orleans since it's flooded and sort of a mess right now. I'd go to Memphis to see the landmarks...BB King's club, Al Green's church, all those musical landmarks.

Many years back, I rode my motorcycle solo from Memphis to here. One of the best experiences of my life, because I did have the time to stop and check things out. Take your time and see everything one the way. I went up to St. Louis, and across on 70. Funny thing is-when I hit the Kansas state line, I had to ride sideways because of the wind (Toto, I don't think....). Colorado border- the temperature suddenly dropped about 30 degrees. Utah? I had a sudden urge to find a few wives.....

Take the Bourbon trail up to Chicago then go through Wisconsin the Dakotas and then Yellowstone.

Duh. I didn't even think about that flood. I am a terrible person.

And I can make that Utah joke, because my family originally setteled in the Richmond/Logan area.... Been there a couple times for family reunions.

I like this. Not trying to go to the land of Oz though...hehe

You think New Orleans will be fine by November.? Going there first weekend

You could find a few wives but they'll be attached to the same husband

Utah jokes are fun. I had my 21st birthday whilst in Brigham City Utah. I tried to get 21st birthday drunk and failed. But, I felt pretty good the next morning.

Avoid the rust belt at all costs...Kentucky is beautiful to drive through and Tennessee...after that I pretty much find 80west and beeline for Tahoe

If you have your passport go up the Canadian Rockies up to banff go through VANCOUVER and Seattle down to Portland.
I've never driven the length of Canada ...that would be an interesting trip except the Winnipeg leg which would be endless wheatfields

I like his idea of going North, if the weather is ok. Yelowstone would be cool, as long as it doesn't blow up on you... I went in late September, and got caught in the first snowstorm of the winter. Had to pay two stoner dudes to drive me and my bike, in their truck, 250 miles to get through the Rockies. Whatever you do- if you see a tourist trap sign that interests you, stop and see it! Horse Canyon, Utah-that's another story..... Lol.

We did a Yellowstone and Canadian Rockies trip as a kid. Went all the way to Edmonton to see the mall there
Yeah, this sounds good. If you hit Vancouver, BC, plan on hitting the Empire Landmark hotel. They have a revolving resturant/bar on the 42nd floor. AWESOME views. Another option is White Rock, if you want some killer night life...

This is my big internal debate; going north or south. I have been through those northern states many more times than the southern states and have actually been to Yellowstone 3 times. I am digging these ideas though.

Check out the Prada Marfa building in texss if u go south
