the wrong side of history

Ha! Now this is an interesting take.
What you fail to see or understand, likly due to your short time here, is that there were indeed days when words and saying did not mean what you choose to take as offensive. I can remember, you can not.

Can you imagine putting a Monkey Wrench on the market today? How long would it last? You know what you guys would choose to dog whistle it. This shit is not new, it just a curious to me that it last so long. It if friggin ridiculous you know.
But the list grows.

Stop. Just... Stop...

I know what a fucking monkey wrench is. It's called that because it's shaped like a monkey's tail.

You know I work for KOHLER right? We have plumbers who use those all the time.

IT'S STILL BEING USED...

It's also called a pipe wrench.

The whole strawman argument that people don't know that reference or that people would react negatively to it, is bullshit.

Don't try and sell that crap to me. And you need to stop trying to sell it on the forum. I don't know who's buying it...

I'm not buying it 'cause how can I buy what I can't even read?

No doubt it was a poor choice of words, and that he should have known better. But nice to see that there are people who can see a poor word choice and not immediately assume actual racism.

I am heartened.

Poor choice of word? or a carefully planted dig at his competition? Nobody knows for sure except for Desantis, but making comments like that which can be left open to interpretation is what can take politicians down. I have no idea who this Desantis guy is and what his history is regarding race, but if he has a history of these kind of comments then he just painted a bulls eye on his back.

You know what I love about this Florida race

It's Trumpets vs Berniecrats!!!

What should've happened in the 2016 election.

Gillum, I'm listening to him now, is gonna give that asshat Desantis a smashing.

Cup, look at the campaign ad above. Lol!

I'd like to add that dviss called him an ass hat and I think that fits him perfectly.

Never noticed that.

Still don't.

"
Themonkey wrench, known asgas gripsin the UK, is anadjustable wrench, a later American development of eighteenth-century English coach wrenches. It was popular in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries but is now used only for heavier tasks, having been mostly replaced by the lighter and sleeker shifting adjustable spanner. The termmonkey wrenchis also used colloquially to refer to thepipe wrench, owing to their broadly similar shapes.

These are also known as aFord wrenchowing to this type of wrench being included in the tool kit supplied with everyFord Model A. They are still used by aircraft technicians, chiefly when large but lowtorquefasteners are involved."

I have one onboard. I like it for large Bronse nuts. The Stillson will ruff them up, the Monkey wrench won't and I have no Crescent that big.

Throwing a Monkey wrench in the works, usually will fuck up a machine. Same with a project even if no hardware is involved, likely race isn't either.

I wasn't referring to this instance per se...I was talking about things in general.

...and that's part of our problem...people are too easily offended by what others say...not by what they DO, again, not by what they actually DO, but instead what they say....what ever happened to "sticks and stones..."?
I think there are two sides to your post. One the one hand I agree that people shouldn’t be so caught up and bothered by what others think or say. But on the other hand when folks are not corrected and permitted to being offensive it can lead to a belief that the idea is actually ok. That can then lead to actions.

Example People used to say fag frequently. You might think, what’s the big deal, just words. But for people who are a bit homophobic the frequent use of that term makes them feel they are correct. And the more homophobic people end up hurting gay people. Also, you have someone who is gay and they hear fag all the time. It starts enforcing the idea that they are sick, bad or degenerates and can lead to self loathing and even suicide.

So yes, people would be best to not take such offense however it is a good thing societally when “sticks and stones” are confronted and weeded out of our world, as “fag” exited the common vernacular gay people gained more acceptance and there has even been a decline in suicide amongst gay people.

Overall, it’s good to confront racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.

There is often the perception that just cause someone reacts overtly wrong to sticks and stones that they are overly sensitive, but more often they are confronting the word-slinger out of a ideal of rightness and improvement not cause they are too hurt.

confronting the word-slinger out of a ideal of rightness

I suspect you may have a point in some cases.

But in this case, I think the 'Monkey This Up' is closer to the "throw a monkey wrench in the works" than it is to the "See that little monkey run".

Even the later took a long time to make a racial thing out of it. Probably it was done to take down Cosell, as it qrew in the racial taunt.

Only an utter moron could present this as a racist attack.

Only an utter moron could believe the first moron.

Well as I said earlier I believe it’s more than likely it was intended as a dog whistle but I don’t know and I wouldn’t bet more than a few bucks on this one incident. However, to me I view it in context and that leads me to believe it was intended.

Contextual relevance:
1) he is intelligent and has spent plenty of time in the public eye. Whereas you may not have meant this racially, he is a politician and a successful one. They use their words with purpose.

2) he just used another possible dog whistle that joe Biden famously and others have already been publicly chastised for, calling the black man articulate when you don’t often praise white men the same way. (Once again, by itself it’s not proof of anything).

3) he is a supporter of Trump and courts the Trump vote including the portion that Trump has so successfully courted with his own racial dog whistles.

You take the monkey comment by itself and I wouldn’t put weight behind it, but who is saying it, where he is saying it. Who he is trying to get to support him, I think the likelihood of it being racist skyrockets.

You did too notice. You often try to play dumb. It's annoying.

You know this too is a monkey wrench:

I’m not sure why I’m opening myself to a bunch of useless flack but........this particular thread truly takes the case for making a mountain out of a molehill and utterly illustrates just how far we have fallen as a society. When (WHEN???) on God’s green earth did using the word “monkey” as a frickin’ VERB(!!!) become rascist???? I have used that word for 64 years and NEVER EVER has it had any rascist connotations whatsoever. It means to fumble with, tweak with, to mess with et al. Like an actual monkey would do if turned loose on something unfamiliar or man made. How many times have members of this forum observed someone fumbling around with something and said (or thought), “They look like a monkey trying to fuck a football?” I get that “monkey” as a NOUN is questionable at best when used to describe another human being. But anyone who thinks that this DeSantis guy (whoever he is) used the term with rascist intent is deliberately looking for trouble. What a pathetic....and counterproductive......topic. All the real problems in government and everyone would rather be off chasing squirrels........time to re-evaluate whether this forum is worth anymore of my precious time.......

I always just assumed it was named after Charles Monckey, who invented it? That's what my father told me when I was a child, anyway.

Turns out that story isn't true, at least according to wikipedia.

He's stupid for saying it. He's doubling down on his stupidity.

It was a stupid thing to say. He's gonna lose anyway.

Nope! That is a pipe wrench or Stillson. It can be misused for the same task, but it will sure as hell mess up your softer nuts like brass, even bronze. It will destroy the aluminum nuts. It sure as hell works the same, if you intend to throw a "Monkey wrench in the works".

An old time Shipwright would rip your dumb ass for even suggesting they are the same. Perhaps plumbers do not know the difference. I will leave you to judge.

It was only stupid because he didn’t stop to think about how the left wing zealots would respond. As I stated, ANYONE who actually thinks that comment was in any way, shape or form rascist is deliberately looking for trouble. End of debate.

The debates not over because you say it is..

Bottom line, you shouldn't use the word monkey when describing black people. So no...

What he said was stupid. Let's just leave it at that.

I’ll leave it where I want to leave it. DeSantis was not “describing” anyone whatsoever. He was telling his audience that his opponent should not trying fucking with a local economy that was doing well. Imagine the uproar if he had used the term I used. Sounds to me like a very large segment of the population has a serious reading/listening comprehension problem and only see/hear what they want to.........

I see.
So the actual meaning of words is not the same as it depends on the politics of the speaker. Yes I do believe you mean it.
Monkey has taken on new meaning, I suppose more will follow, when it suits the purposes of the left.

Bullshit. Monkey has not "taken on a new meaning".

This is fucking utter bullshit.

I'm not saying he was being racist by saying monkey, but to act like monkey hasn't been a pejorative to describe us is utter crap.
