Roy Felt "Hurt" He Didn't Play More

You Roy-bashers are really pathetic.

The guy gets asked a question about how it feels to only play 8 minutes in a playoff game when you've been a All-Star the previous 3 years. He does what Brandon always does and answers the question honestly. He doesn't blow the usual rah-rah, politically correct bullshit smoke up everyone's ass. Instead, he tells us the truth about how bad it hurts. He still believes that he can contribute and make a difference in this series. You can question his judgment. You can say that he should have said it differently. You can say that he should have simply answered with a "no comment". What you can't say with any truth is that you know how his knees feel. You can't say with any honesty that you know what he would be able to do if given enough playing time 2G spot to get into some sort of rhythm because he simply hasn't been given that chance. He's been shoved into a role of spot minutes essentially playing out of position as a make-do PG. His contract has absolutely nothing to do with this issue, but you nimrods can't seem to quit harping on it.

There's a game to be played tonight, so I'd suggest that it's time to move on.

What exactly is enough time? He's been routinely given 20+ minutes but hasn't contributed very much.

When is the last time you saw Roy get ANY minutes where he was clearly playing the 2G spot?

You Roy homers are really pathetic....

Don't give me this bs about Rudy Fernandez, he played 11 minutes last night...interestingly enough he was more prouductive and didn't whine like a little baby about it either......

No he just cried saying he would sit out for 2 years! LMAO!

Disgruntled Rudy Fernandez prepared to sit out final two years of contract after Trail Blazers fail to trade him

http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2010/08/disgruntled_rudy_fernandez_pre.html

So go ahead Roy homers, show us how Roy should deserve to start, how he deserves to have the offense run through him or how his play in game 1 or 2 clearly shows he needs more minutes.....

I am not one that thinks he should start, or deserves to. But I do think he deserves more than 8 minutes in a ball game. Anyone that knows Roy's game, knows that he needs time to get into rhythm. If you think Kobe can come in for 8 minutes a game and produce, you are fooling yourself and pathetic. I've seen games when even Aldridge has "dry spells" and won't score for 8 minutes. Kobe, LJ, Wade, Melo all had these same type of spells.

Also, if you want to bring up game 1, remember last night Kobe had a terrible night on the floor. Guess Laker fans should call him out and bench his ass too. Talk about Pathetic! HAHAHAHAHAHA

BULLSHIT

If he wants more minutes then PROVE to Nate that you deserve them, it is that fucking simple. IF his knees are greatly affecting his play then he shouldn't be out there, and if his knees aren't bothering him then quite frankly the cause for concern is much greater because it clearly shows the guy has a mental problem.

He had all 4th quarter in game 1 to get in a rhythm and he was a compete non factor out there. He got a "heat check" in game 2 and looked worse. He didn't deserve the minutes...and no matter what he HAS done previously for this franchise, it doesn't mean a damm thing to helping the team win NOW.

You know I don't recall hearing Wesley Matthews whine about his minutes after Game 1 and Nate laughingly admitted he "forgot" about him? I don't recall Rudy complaining about only playing 11 minutes in Game 2? I DO recall Gerald Wallace refreshingly state how he was "awful" in game 1, but you see with Roy, that apparently isn't the case.

After Game 2 he said that? Or before the season started? Yeah, that is what I thought. Read what I wrote.

I guarantee you Kobe could score the basketball, but this is a ridiculous comparison now isn't it? Because Kobe, unlike Roy has cartilage in his knees, and Kobe, unlike Roy has been healthy and perfoming at a high level all season, and Kobe unlike Roy has actually led his team past the FIRST FUCKING ROUND.

I'll tell you what is pathetic....is trying to compare Roy's situation to Kobe...

Seriously? You are actually going to try and make a comparison here? Roy, outside of what 1 game this year has been pretty "terrible" and you think that equates to Kobe having ONE "terrible" night? Dude, a little perspective might be in order.

If Rudy and Wesley were doing something wonderful on the court, you'd have a better case. They've all sucked.

I'm all for Nate doing what he thinks is best for the team and from what he said yesterday, that's what he's going to do tonight. But what I'm seeing out of far too many fans is the presumption that they know that Brandon can't play, that what he said is because he's a crybaby instead of because it reflects what he really feels he has to offer the team, and that because Brandon has a big fat contract and isn't producing due to no fault of his own, he somehow deserves the fan's scorn.

Just stating the obvious. You talk like Fernandez is this model player that never complained and don't go back peddling on it. No he didn't say it in the playoffs, he was a distraction for 2 fucking years! Dude get over yourself. Fact is, I am proving that players are human and say things like this when things aren't going their way.

You act like Roy wasn't mentioned in the same breath as those other greats. Boy how the memory of Blazer fans fade so quickly.

Here's a fact:

Walton = Face of franchise. Injury problems and Portland turned their back and traded him. Won a title in Boston.

Drexler = Face of franchise. Got an injury, then the team was given to Robinson and he was traded the next year. Won a title in Houston.

Kersey = Face of franchise. Got an injury, and his role on the team was diminished. Left Portland to win a title in SAS.

Grant = face of franchise. Got an injury, and his role on the team was diminished. Was traded to Miami and won a title with the Lakers.

Roy = face of franchise. Got an injury, and his role on the team was diminished. What happens next?

There is nothing to "get over", nor is there any backpeddling, your trying to infer something I never stated. I never said Rudy wasn't a little crybaby, he certainly is, but that doesn't negate the fact that Roy is acting like one right now.

Look, Roy can either keep whining about his fate like he is now, or fucking do something about it. Go out there and SHOW Nate by his play that he deserves more minutes. If he only gets 8 minutes then prove in those minutes that he needs more, isn't that what Nate asks of any of his players?

The problem with that is that Brandon takes time to get loose. He always has since his first season here. To expect him to somehow be able to change that now into an instant offense player, especially given his knee issues, is just setting him up to fail. He needs to come in and be given 10-12 minutes in a row in the 1st half. If he does nothing with them, then I'm fine with Nate sitting him in the second half if Wesley is doing something worth a damn out there.

Actually you did.

100% agree with this. Giving Roy 2-3 minute spurts to see if he has his game isn't going to be a good situation. If Roy had 10-12 minutes in a row and he ain't producing, then absolutely bench him in the second half. I think I've read this by someone before and I think it's a perfectly good idea. You give Roy a chance to prove himself. If he ain't doing well, then he and the fans can feel better about him sitting on the bench.

Game 1 Wallace played like shit, and he played for 40 minutes. According to "Earn you play" scenario; Wallace should have been benched as well as Roy. But I like many in here know that would be stupid; as stupid as thinking Roy only deserved 8 minutes (2 minute intervals).

But what I'm seeing out of far too many fans is the presumption that they know that Brandon can't play

We can be pretty sure he "can't play" (by which I assume you mean can't play well...obviously he can physically go on the court and play) not because we have a deep insight into Roy's knees but because he's been showing it for months.

that what he said is because he's a crybaby instead of because it reflects what he really feels he has to offer the team

Leaving aside the term "crybaby," since I've never used that term, complaining and making comments that "reflect what he really feels he has to offer the team" are not mutually exclusive, nor are they usually separate. Almost every player who complains truly believes what they are saying. Few players complain just to fuck with people.

and that because Brandon has a big fat contract and isn't producing due to no fault of his own, he somehow deserves the fan's scorn.

Again, since you're trying to glue everyone's positions together, I have no idea who embodies this belief...but as someone who mentioned his contract, it had nothing to do with "deserving scorn." In fact, I labeled the fan who said he'd boo Roy each time he got the ball a jerk. What his contract means is that he's a well-paid professional and part of the job description is keeping personal frustration over a circumstance beyond anyone's control (his broken athleticism) to himself and his family/friends, rather than making it everyone's problem. In my opinion, of course. I can completely understand he's frustrated, but he's where he is due to bad luck...not due to an injustice committed against him that can be rectified by alerting people to it.

Just a couple of points.

First, the implication that Roy is being singled out and treated differently isn't accurate. Rudy has also taken a (well deserved) beating for complaining to the media.

Second, it can take time for a player and coach to develop trust. IMHO, that was the root of the problem between Nate and Miller....so I am willing to give Miller just a *little* slack for his actions. Roy's situation is very different.

Roy apologizes

Brandon Roy: "It was probably something that shouldn't have been said...I'll apologize to my fans if I offended anybody."

grouch, i completely and totally understand this and I agree. Roy shouldn't have gone public regarding his frustrations. I am only pointing out Fernandez and Miller because comments were made that these players didn't cause the distraction like Roy did. And in all fairness, the argument of Miller stating this in pre-season further justifies my argument. Why?

1.) He never played a single minute in the season for the Blazers. Basically, hasn't proven shit on the team yet.

2.) Yeah he had a great resumé and arguably a much better PG than Blanky; but again, there have been thousands of great players on other teams, only to fail on the new team they go to. Example: Kemp from Seattle to Cleveland, Rahim from Griz to Portland, and the list goes on.

3.) Roy has a great record, and actually did a lot of what he did already on injured legs (bone spur on heel). No one realizes that Roy had this same procedure on his knees a few times before and he played at an allstar level.

So I do agree that we shouldn't just leave him out there just because he's Roy, but I do believe giving him 2 minute samples to try and come back is completely unreasonable to find out if he can help this team.

Roy apologizes

Brandon Roy: "It was probably something that shouldn't have been said...I'll apologize to my fans if I offended anybody."

Nate:

He’s going to play his role, which is coming off the bench,” McMillan said. “There wasn’t any minutes promised or anything like that. All of our guys want to play minutes.”

http://www.columbian.com/news/2011/apr/20/mcmillan-addresses-roy-situation/

So Roy apologizes and Nate says he isn't starting. That pretty much settles everything, looks like I can close this thread now.

No offense, but you are showing your youth here. :devilwink:

Walton left as a free agent. While he has changed his tune somewhat recently, he made it clear at the time that he really didn't like being here.

Clyde was in the twilight of his career, and asked to be traded to a contender.

Grant had an "opt out" clause in his contract. He told the team to trade him, or he would become a FA. It had nothing to do with injuries. In fact, many people said it was primarily to save his marriage.

As for Jerome - he was on thin ice already after being implicated in a statutory rape case in SLC. Injury problems were either the last straw...or a convenient excuse.

Sorry - but I don't see how any of those cases really compare to Roy.

Just look at Roy's game log over the past two months:
http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/roybr01/gamelog/2011/

What does anybody see there to indicate he's likely to drop 20 or 25 in game 3 if he got decent minutes?

Since December 12th, he's scored over 20 points only one time. Only 4 times in that span has he racked up even 5 assists. He's shooting at 40%FG/33%3FG on the season.

Roy's game is scoring and passing. He can play 8 minutes a night or 40 minutes a night, and on most nights he won't do either well.

We can be pretty sure he "can't play" (by which I assume you mean can't play well...obviously he can physically go on the court and play) not because we have a deep insight into Roy's knees but because he's been showing it for months.

I thought I'd been pretty clear as to what I was saying, but let me try again. I don't think that Brandon has been given enough time since his return playing at the 2G spot to really have a clear idea as to what he can contribute. Nate's focus, to me, has seemed to be more on how he can get some PT for Rudy by playing Roy at the PG spot than it has been on reintegrating Roy at his natural position and giving him enough minutes there to get
back into any kind of rhythm.

Not sure why you seem to think this objection was aimed at you. I think a quick review of a few threads here and on other boards, and listening to a couple of talk shows will confirm that many fans have been saying that Roy's a whiner. Actually, I suspect any player worth his salt who isn't getting playing time is going to bitch about it in some way. Roy's "mistake" was responding honestly in a moment when he was upset to questions asked of him by reporters. I would expect that given the heat he's been getting, he won't make that "mistake" again. Nothing but platitudes from here on out.

Again, since you're trying to glue everyone's positions together, I have no idea who embodies this belief...but as someone who mentioned his contract, it had nothing to do with "deserving scorn." I think you can rest assured that you weren't one of the fans I was talking about, Minstrel. I'm not sure why you would think that you were since you have never made that kind of statement. Plenty of others here and elsewhere can't seem to divorce talking about Roy's performance from bitching about his contract. Your statement about getting paid somehow divorcing a player from the right to complain about his role on the team is a nice theory, I've just never seen it work out that way in the NBA. Top players are top players because they have an ego.

Sure, but that's like saying, for example, that politicians not making promises they don't intend to keep is nice in theory, I've just never seen it work out that way. That may be true, because human nature is such, but that doesn't exonerate them when they do it. Maybe Roy isn't different from any other highly talented player, but when he "misbehaves" (each person can decide for themselves whether what he did here was wrong, which is why I put it in quotation marks) he'll deserve criticism just like anyone else. A lot of athletes do annoying things due to their ego. I don't think Roy is a monster, but I think he didn't do the right thing here.

I don't have any problem with Roy getting criticism for what he said. I'm on record here saying that I thought it was stupid and immature of him (if perhaps understandable) for him to have made the comments he did, especially at this point in the season. I just object to some of the over-the-top vitriol that's being directed his way.

We're 0-2 and have been beaten by two players well past their primes playing like they discovered the Fountain of Youth. Meanwhile, our supporting cast has sucked. People are frustrated and they're popping off. Yeah, I'm annoyed with Roy, but people say stupid things all the time.

Since nothing a player says in the media can be trusted, and is likely a lie, I'm surprised this thread went on as long as it did. Roy's words mean nothing, right?

I wish Camby and Miller would have a few sips from that fountain for tonight.

That's actually a disturbing thought. Premeditated manipulation would be even worse than a spontaneous emotional outburst.
