Re: According to Chris Broussard, Roy to announce medical retirement today!

THAT RULE SUCKS!!

maybe not since it's well before the reg season starts I would think this has a good chance to be "adjusted" to the opening of camp next yr at least given the lockout, we are only ONE DAY past a new CBA being ratified

Re: According to Chris Broussard, Roy to announce medical retirement today!

BTW, Ford's wrong on that rule. From Storyteller's: Article VII, Section 4 (h) of the previous CBA:

"Beginning on the first anniversary of the injury or illness, the Team may apply to the NBA to have the player’s Salary for each remaining Salary Cap Year covered by the Contract excluded from Team Salary."

I trust story more than Ford. In this case, the original injury was last winter, right? Or at least you could say, the last game played. No amnesty would be needed for him to come off our cap before 2012 FA period.

RT @KBergCBS: Source confirms Brandon Roy today is discussing options, including medical retirement due to chronic knee injuries.

And mods. Can we fucking merge this shit? I'm confused where I posted last

One of the coolest professional athletes I have ever associated myself with! He will be missed on and off the court!

If its true, I feel bad for Roy. It's gotta be real hard to admit you cant play the game you love... the game you where so good at... the game that was such a huge part of your life for such a long time... the game you worked your ass off to improve.

This is sad!

I feel for you guys (fans) and the NBA. He really earned his big contract, and it sucks he's gone from top of the world to early retirement.

On the plus side, maybe he wants your job.

Discussing retirement and actually doing it are two separate things. Don't get me wrong even though I love BROy, this would make things easier on the Blazers and fans. But it seems a bit premature until we hear it from a better source. Or at least until we hear who the source is.

in respect to what Roy has done for this franchise and fans I negate my bet with Mags, have no interest in collecting. Great respect to Brandon to make what had to be incredibly hard decision in his prime.

THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT MEMORIES!!!!

I said that as a joke. God, people are so damn serious around here.

I look at it like a celebration.

A) Roy goes out on his terms, not carted off the floor or something.
B) The last thing people will remember is his Game 4. Not a season of 2002 Jordan or being in a Bulls uniform or something.
C) He gets paid, but also still has (relative) health. He's not hobbling when he goes to the movies or anything (like Walton or Phil Jackson)
D) He's always gonna be a Blazer.

Wow he must be crying right now. He has so much pride. What a class act. This decision helped his team. He will be regarding to me as one of the classiest special blazers to ever play this game.

I never expected BRoy to go back to his all-star level but I also never expected this. Shocked and sad. I agreed that something is very very odd about his personal health endorsement to management just a few days ago. I never quite know how to feel about management.

@jwquick
On way back to PDX and trying to get some info on B-Roy and reports of retirement. Haven't heard anything. Very strange development

Thanks Jason for breaking this!

Ya, no shit!
An east coast reporter breaks the story before our local goons! I love it!

Yup. If it goes down, I see this as a the best possible outcome for all parties -- the least amount of bad feelings, financial flexibility, fewer rotation questions, an expanded role for Batum and/or Williams to see if they can get it done.

I know people are upset and it is kind of sad for Brandon that his bright career was cut so short, but this is a good thing people -- in two years nearly everyone will see this.

Of course, Canzano called this in May. Oh, wait...
Canzano said:
I don't for a second believe that Roy will retire. I don't think he believes he's done, nor would any physician who examined him. Again, Game 4. Period. End of discussion. But I do believe that Roy's pride is the true wildcard.

I agree. But the Roy fan in me is sad. Just a terrible way to go out. I will remember him forever. Actually this is great knowing Roy will never wear another teams uniform. He is forever a blazer!

Roy probably realized he had maybe one year left in the NBA and at the cost of speeding up the need for a total knee replacement. In the end, he leaves knowing he played some amazing basketball for as long as he could, earned the money he was paid, gets financial security, and can enjoy his life after basketball. Kudos to Roy for making a pretty good decision, if in fact his career was going to be pretty short and at significant cost.

i appreciate roy for what he was and did for this franchise BUT he is not retiring (if this is true) in his PRIME. his prime was three years ago, as of last season he was a bit player that still had the attitude of a superstar. he was great and again the blazers curse (or whatever you want to call it) robs another athlete of what could of been his greatest years. if this all comes to fruition it will help the team out immensely. some say back to the building blocks, i say we were already there.

I'm thinking that the one year of decline is acceptable. Like I said, he didn't do the Willie-Mays-to-the-Mets thing, he had one year of seeing if he could be great on two bum wheels. He couldn't, he gave us a Game 4 to remember, and now is moving along.

I'm just going to go out there and say "no."
