does this mean we can restructure his contract down the road?

They pay him for this season. I think that is it.

Wrong. He gets his full contract paid, but part of it picked up by insurance and for cap purposes it comes off of Portland's books in a year.
This is worse than the amnesty.
We'll never see Roy play basketball again.
That being said, it’s easy to understand why Brandon Roy would retire. At this point, his knees are made of balsa wood, hardened toothpaste, old rubberbands and those wires you use to hang greenery during the Christmas season. His knees are jealous of Greg Oden’s knees.
Plus, this wouldn’t be the first time the Trail Blazers have convinced a cap killer to retire when he still was able to play in the NBA, word to Darius Miles. If he’s a medical retirement, he still gets all the money from that giant contract he signed in 2010, so it’s not the worst thing in the world for him.
Of course, just like Darius Miles, Roy could retire and then decide that at 27 he’s not ready to be done playing professional basketball for the rest of his life. If he comes back and some other team signs him — even for one game — the Trail Blazers are on the hook for his salary, which would be the only thing more hilarious than paying a max salary to 2011 Brandon Roy in the first place.
Yea I'm just in Denial, thinking maybe he's got something up his sleeve

Is that the new CBA? Isn't it one year from the last game played? (Sorry if this has been answered in the next 15 or whatever pages. I just got here.woah... not to mention this screws our cap for next season!!!!!

If league docs concur Brandon Roy isn't fit to play, his contract comes of Blazers books 1 year from date of official retirement.

)I know Brandon gets his full contract paid, but I thought the Blazers paid the first year and insurance paid everything after the first year. This is wrong?
This is bizarre. How does this develop BEFORE Training Camp even begins? What about the meeting at Larry Miller's House where Roy said he "felt great" and has been working tirelessly on his perimeter shooting? How do you go from that, to retiring? It would be one thing if we were several days into Training Camp and he was getting abused and in serious pain, but they haven't even started yet. Is it possible that the Blazers Front Office talked him into this? They didn't have the balls to Amnesty him with the ensuing backlash from the fans, so they begged Brandon to retire (or they would Amnesty as a last resort)? I just can't understand this. Why now? What changed in the last few days? Roy seemed so certain that his health was good, and he could still contribute.
Not insensitive at all. Insensitive would be celebrating a lose-lose. This is a win-win, and the best thing for Brandon today. His wheels came off a long time ago. It just took a while for everyone, including Brandon, to come to grips with it. If he keeps grinding his knees, he's going to have terrible pain and lost mobility for the rest of his life. Just like Joel, he needs to do what's best for his body and his family.I know it's insensitive of me (but hey when have I ever been accused of being sensitive) but this is a win-win for both Roy and the Blazers if it really goes down.
Here's something to think about.

That would be the ultimate, double-barreled "fuck you" to Paul Allen I could ever imagine.
Maybe he realized after playing at the PF the last few days that there is no way his knees could hold up in training camp and the grind of the fast and furious NBA season.
Now, that's insensitive.Pay up.

Roy is still going to start right? Even a retired athlete could play at Nate's pace.

So you are saying save the amnesty clause just in case?
yeah anyone trying to spin this as good news is a heartless fuck
its good news for brandon that his knees are too fucked to ever play again? wha?
yes it is better to have his money off the books if he cant play, thats it
Oh, mix, don't be such a negative nancy. The sun will come out tomorrow. OK, maybe next June. But it will come out.so they should blow it up now....
next summer we lose roy, oden camby and wallace.
