Roy to retire today????

I'm skeptical it's going to happen, but if it does:

Thanks for all of the memories, Brandon.

This is worse than the amnesty.

We'll never see Roy play basketball again.

They pay him for this season. I think that is it.

Wrong. He gets his full contract paid, but part of it picked up by insurance and for cap purposes it comes off of Portland's books in a year.

Yea I'm just in Denial, thinking maybe he's got something up his sleeve

The fact that Martell Webster tweeted about it makes me think this is legit. I'm thinking Martell would call Roy to confirm its true before tweeting about it. They are very good friends.

This opens up more PT for Elliot Williams.

wonder if there is any way we could "combine" amnesty and retirement so we could ge a full MLE this year?

yeah anyone trying to spin this as good news is a heartless fuck

its good news for brandon that his knees are too fucked to ever play again? wha?

yes it is better to have his money off the books if he cant play, thats it

Here's something to think about.

Trey Kerby:

That being said, it’s easy to understand why Brandon Roy would retire. At this point, his knees are made of balsa wood, hardened toothpaste, old rubberbands and those wires you use to hang greenery during the Christmas season. His knees are jealous of Greg Oden’s knees.

Plus, this wouldn’t be the first time the Trail Blazers have convinced a cap killer to retire when he still was able to play in the NBA, word to Darius Miles. If he’s a medical retirement, he still gets all the money from that giant contract he signed in 2010, so it’s not the worst thing in the world for him.
Of course, just like Darius Miles, Roy could retire and then decide that at 27 he’s not ready to be done playing professional basketball for the rest of his life. If he comes back and some other team signs him — even for one game — the Trail Blazers are on the hook for his salary, which would be the only thing more hilarious than paying a max salary to 2011 Brandon Roy in the first place.

That would be the ultimate, double-barreled "fuck you" to Paul Allen I could ever imagine.

I know Brandon gets his full contract paid, but I thought the Blazers paid the first year and insurance paid everything after the first year. This is wrong?

Re: According to Chris Broussard, Roy to announce medical retirement today!

woah... not to mention this screws our cap for next season!!!!!

If league docs concur Brandon Roy isn't fit to play, his contract comes of Blazers books 1 year from date of official retirement.

Is that the new CBA? Isn't it one year from the last game played? (Sorry if this has been answered in the next 15 or whatever pages. I just got here. :) )

This is bizarre. How does this develop BEFORE Training Camp even begins? What about the meeting at Larry Miller's House where Roy said he "felt great" and has been working tirelessly on his perimeter shooting? How do you go from that, to retiring? It would be one thing if we were several days into Training Camp and he was getting abused and in serious pain, but they haven't even started yet. Is it possible that the Blazers Front Office talked him into this? They didn't have the balls to Amnesty him with the ensuing backlash from the fans, so they begged Brandon to retire (or they would Amnesty as a last resort)? I just can't understand this. Why now? What changed in the last few days? Roy seemed so certain that his health was good, and he could still contribute.

Could this all just be a leverage play from Brandon to get amnestied so he can leave?

Hmmm ... that I don't know. I think the insurance kicks in as soon as he files his papers, but maybe not.

Maybe he realized after playing at the PF the last few days that there is no way his knees could hold up in training camp and the grind of the fast and furious NBA season.

I know it's insensitive of me (but hey when have I ever been accused of being sensitive) but this is a win-win for both Roy and the Blazers if it really goes down.
Not insensitive at all. Insensitive would be celebrating a lose-lose. This is a win-win, and the best thing for Brandon today. His wheels came off a long time ago. It just took a while for everyone, including Brandon, to come to grips with it. If he keeps grinding his knees, he's going to have terrible pain and lost mobility for the rest of his life. Just like Joel, he needs to do what's best for his body and his family.

that is what I'm thinking, as he upped his pre camp play the knees already were already acting up, we'll see

Roy is still going to start right? Even a retired athlete could play at Nate's pace.

It's official if Adrian Wojnarowski confirms it.

"Portland's Brandon Roy has been diagnosed with a "career-ending (knee) injury," league source confirms to Y! Sports. "He's done."

So you are saying save the amnesty clause just in case?

No what Kerby is saying is that if Roy wanted to screw the Blazers he could pull a Darius and come back and play for somebody else with the express purpose of putting his contract back on the Blazers' books for the life of his contract ... I think the question being raised is whether or not Roy is trying to leverage the Blazers to use the amnesty on him so he can go somewhere else and play.

His knees are too fucked ever to play again. That can't change, and has no bearing on the celebration or sadness.

What he did have control over was not fumbling around for the next couple of years like Miles on a 10-day, tarnishing his image and looking foolish. I celebrate that.

this was on blazersedge

Roy's retirement would eventually give the Blazers salary-cap relief. League rules call for a waiting period of one year from the date of the player's injury or illness. Since Roy played all the way into the playoffs last season, that date will likely be April 28, 2012 -- one year from the day the Blazers were eliminated from the playoffs.

his contract comes off the cap before the FA period and even before the end of this season

Re: According to Chris Broussard, Roy to announce medical retirement today!

so they should blow it up now....

Oh, mix, don't be such a negative nancy. The sun will come out tomorrow. OK, maybe next June. But it will come out.
