Rudy may want out? (MERGED)

I don't understand how anyone could say that McMillans offense was really anything more than iso's and pick and rolls. How could you guys watch the team all season and not see how much our team struggled when the opposition took away the pick and roll, or doubled Brandon as soon as he crossed the half court line. Nate's offense IS extremely predictable. We rely too heavily on Roy to handle the ball and create, which he does so well, but often times it came back to bite us in the ass.

Was I the only one who saw teams use the pick and roll to double Roy? Brandon would sit out top, wait for the pick from Joel, but when it came, Joel's man would cut Brandon off, and Brandon's man would stay, so it would be an easy double, forcing Roy to pass or take a tough shot.
When I'm breaking down film or when I use the Synergy software to watch games I can sort by the types of sets Portland runs, and their "Iso" and "Pick & Roll" sets barely make up half of our offense.

I think people notice those two plays more than other standard NBA sets because they are so simple and easy to remember, that is why they say it is all we run.

If you watched a team like Denver play a lot, then you would understand what a predictable set is.

That's my question as well. I don't see how Rudy could break his contract and still play professionally, but this could be the case. I'm not sure how his status as a foreigner impacts him leaving the NBA while under contract.

Didn't someone cover this? FIBA would not allow him to play in Europe unless he was released from his contract with Portland.

I recall Rudy taking 15-20 spinning fade-away jumpers this season, and making about 5. Not something I would call a high percentage shot.
I wasn't referring to that shot as being more involved. I was using it as a point of reference for the game...if that makes any sense.

I mean early in the season (admittedly before he was properly scouted) he was more involved in the offense. As the season wore on (I'm sure at least partially due to fatigue) he was relegated to standing outside of the three point line.

I just think he could be used more effectively, as he was in the Olympics.

That's what I thought but I wasn't sure. I was searching for confirmation, but I trust your word on it.

I think we notice them because Nate tends to rely on them at the close of a tight game.

Another thing to note, is that Rudy is working out with Blazers' assistant coach, Kaleb Canales, in Spain right now. If he was really "infuriated" with the Blazers, why would he be working to get better with a Blazers' coach?

Here's a quote from Rudy's blog:
Hi from Mallorca. My basketball camp started on Sunday and the last two days have been very busy. I always said that my camp motivates me cause I like to be close to the boys and girls and hang out with them. I do everything with them and look out for them the whole time. It’s really hot in Mallorca right now but we try to have fun and go to the pool as much as possible… This week I also had a couple visits from Portland! Casey is the manager ofwww.trailblazers.com and he wanted to come over and write about what’s going on on the camp every day: http://trailblazerscentercourt.blogspot.com/. Casey is a cool guy and it’s a pleasure to have him here. This is a more relaxed time than during the season, when he has to go after us… Another person that came is Kaleb Canales, one of our coaches in the Blazers. Kaleb helped me a lot during the season (he speaks Spanish, haha) and he is a great guy, very funny. He came to help at the camp and to work me out to stay in shape… I need to rest during the summer but also keep in the best shape possible… Here you can see a picture of Kaleb and myself after practice

Bye!

I got you, that makes sense.

I expect for his role to develop. Most players see their roles expand after their rookie year.

Excellent point and post!

With Joel yes. With Turk, LMA and eventually Greg............... No

Rudy would have only learned about the Turkoglu situation today or yesterday. So it can be assumed that his dissatisfaction started today or yesterday.

Starting lineup next season:

G Brandon Roy
G Rudy Fernandez
F Hedo Turkoglu
F LaMarcus Aldridge
C Greg Oden

Let's go big, and scrap the PG idea.

X 1000

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea of running a lineup with three guys that are triple threats. Any of those guys can bring the ball up the court. Any of those guys can run the offense. It's gonna be super hotness.

That is a fair criticism and I notice that to be true. That is common for most NBA teams, but certainly Portland is one of them.

But why run the pick and roll with Joel so much then?

I realize we run it with LMA a lot too, but I see Joel at the top of the key quite often.

If so, I find it very difficult to believe a "league source" would learn of this supposed dissatisfaction so soon.

Couldn't he announce retirement from NBA play, which would terminate his contract with the Blazers and go back to FIBA?

I do not think so. Otherwise, Rubio could terminate his contract with DKV and go to the NBA without playing a huge penalty. It goes both ways.

No. There is an agreement between the NBA and FIBA that regulates that sort of thing.

Just like we couldn't get Rudy without him buying out his contract in Europe, he couldn't play FIBA without getting out of his Portland contract first.

I don't think it's that simple. I'm pretty sure the same rules apply to Euro players as they do here. Ricky Rubio can't announce retirement from European basketball to come play here either.

I wouldn't. Agents get stuff out realllllllllllllll quick, and if Rudy told his agent about his concerns (which is highly likely), I wouldn't be at all surprised if his agent was the one spreading the news to the "sources." Of course Rudy's concerns might be really overblown and exaggerated by then, but that's the truth with most "news" stories.

Unless Rudy is pulling a Sergio and he's voicing his discontent through the media.

Got it. Much appreciated.

Man, the reaction to an internet rumor around here is about as predictable as the results of the doctor's little rubber hammer tapping a knee.

Gotta love this time of year.

I love Rudy's game but not enough to play over Roy. I think Nate could have used he better playing Roy and Rudy more together in the regular season. I still think it doesn't matter about Hedo and it would have been something else to upset Rudy with playing behind Roy. I hate to say this but now is the time to trade Rudy with his value still fairly high. I would still sign Hedo and try and trade Rudy, Blake and Outlaw plus picks for Harris or maybe even Conley.

So you want to stay with Steve Blake then? haha..

Why do you keep putting words in my mouth? If you want to ask a question, great, but you are assuming things that I didn't say.

This saddens me.
