Rumor Russell Westbrook gay?

It would be interesting and brave indeed if one of the game's top players like RW came out, loud and proud. (if indeed Darth Gaydar's midi-chlorians are fully operational)

Unfortunately, I think society has a decade or more of evolving left to do before it's "safe enough." ($)

Quite the opposite, he'll be more popular and make more money.

But is mainstream society at that inflection point yet? I think you might be right but I bet there is still a great deal of fear and risk involved for that transcendent superstar who finally takes that 'leap of faith.'

Yes. Its almost hip to be gay nowadays in mainstream society. Sure, there are a lot of people who are homophobic still and violently against the lifestyle, but as far as the media and pop culture goes, anyone who gives confirmed homosexual Russell Westbrook shit will be shunned from society.

Bro, you've lived in Los Angeles way too long..he's in Oklahoma

Go walk down the street holding another dude's hand vs. walk down the street wearing a bunch of Donald Trump shit on. Which scenario do you think will be more prone to violence or harassment?

I'm not so sure about that. On a surface level it would seem it's "hip to be gay" in mainstream society, but I think there might be a bit of a closeted bigotry going on out there, at least from the kids and parents who actually buy the jerseys and shoes.

It's really just a question of a major star breaking the silence and then letting the chips fall where they may.

depends where you are in my opinion...in Silverlake or West Hollywood you'd be absolutely correct...in Tulsa, I'm not so sure about that

Imagine walking down the street holding a dudes hand with a bunch of trump shit on.

Personally, I hope the first NBA player to come out has better fashion sense. Oi vey!

Martina Navratilova was out in her prime. I saw her play several times. She always had a big cheering section of lesbian fans.

So you can post whatever topic you want, it's only OT if it doesn't relate to basketball?

So basically say whatever you want as long as you include the sport some how.

should I just go start a thread about how Obama is the best because he likes basketball?

I don't mind at all editing, deleting and moving threads. Sounds like you guys are tired of the hands free approach here and want the mods to "police" the forum more.

I saw this dude a couple of weeks ago...

If RW announced he was gay, would that affect KD's free agency? Probably. Would he be bucking to leave OKC? Very likely. So, yeah, it affects basketball and even the blazers.

My argument isn't with the content of the thread, it's that it's years old and not corroborated.

We expect tennis players and gymnists to be in this category

Didn't that already happen with Collins? Not much fashion sense, but he did come out as a player.

Based on the hopes of some in this thread, I'm not sure Collins counts. My recollection was that he announced, everyone rejoiced, and then he wasn't offered a contract the next year.

You can be an engineer with long hair, but you'd better be good at what you do.
You can be an athlete who is gay, but you'd better be good at what you do.
You can be out of the norm, but you'd better be good at what you do.

Not quite sure this is true. Hard to tell if Collins and Sam didn't do better than their abilities deserved when they came out. I would argue Collins made more. Sam thinks he didn't get a fair shot, but I'm not sure there is any evidence of that. No metrics I saw showed him as real NFL material.

I would also argue a high profile athlete (very good at what they do) will probably be harmed more than an unknown. It's polarizing and polarizing doesn't help sponsors. Even Tebo suffered from that.

As it should.
