Shams: Olshey being investigated for workplace misconduct

It's funny that a lot of things posters on this board have speculated about Olshey (egomaniacal, hard to work with, lack of humility) based on how he handles press conferences turned out to be true! And so many people defended Olshey over the years. Sometimes when someone shows you who they are, you should believe them.

He's a goner.

Blazer's Edge: Blazers Exec Neil Olshey Under Investigation for Workplace Misconduct.

employees [are] alleging a toxic, hostile work environment where staff members have been subjected to intimidation and profanity-laced tirades, among other bullying tactics
He further elaborates the steps the franchise is taking:

The organization enlisted the services of O’Melveny & Myers to run the independent investigation, and the firm began interviewing employees of the team’s front office off-site this week, with several staffers expressing the relief because of the investigation after 10 years of mistreatment leading to mental and physical stress, sources said.
Haynes says that Olshey’s future will depend on the results:

The firm is shortly expected to submit its findings to team owner Jody Allen, and a decision on Olshey’s future will be determined soon after, sources said.

Most staff members are hopeful that the investigation brings change after feeling voiceless and unheard for so long, sources said.

Haynes also referenced the death of Video Coordinator Zach Cooper in 2020, saying Blazers staff members “raised concern” about unnamed “mishandling” following Mr. Cooper’s passing.

I just wish everyone could be the target of a witch hunt. Most people deserve it with what they allow for. Oh, and the meaure of guilt must always be arbitrary and given to the latest hysterical whims.
I don't think that's what happens at all. If these guys have nothing to worry about then they shrug off the investigation because they know it won't unearth anything. The fact is people have been able to treat others abhorrently and operate under a different set of rules because they were "powerful", for a long time now. What we're watching now is a reckoning for some of those people... not the most powerful but the next rung down.

A witch hunt is when there is nothing to the accusation but people are punished anyway. Olshey won't be burned at the stake or even fired if he has nothing that he's guilty of. So of course the measure of guilt matters.

because he's a bad boss? voiceless staff, mental stress, etc. sounds like par for the course in corporate america. cringeworthy but hardly breaking news.

curious to see what comes of the cooper thing. this was what i recall from reading about it.

If these things were OK with the team they wouldn't be investigating. If enough employees are sick of him he'll be canned.

It's breaking news if his boss finds it unacceptable or if Olshey has been selling himself as something completely different. It's not at all shocking but of course you can fire someone for employee abuse if they're consistently being an asshole to your employees. If Olshey was the owner and only had to answer to the other owners it would take more than being an asshole (racism, sexual harassment, etc.) but he's not the owner. So the owner will get to decide if being an asshole to the front office staff is a fireable offense. If the investigation indeed shows Olshey to be a "bad boss".

I've never heard Dame talk about how Neil is part of what keeps him here. Just recently he's been talking up how much he wants to be part of Chauncey's legacy. If we can lose Neil and not have to pay him the rest of his contract... that would be fantastic. I just want it done and a replacement named before the trade deadline.

Except it sets a bad precedent and will dissuade other GM candidates to sign here if they think ownership pulls dirty tricks to circumvent a contract.

If he did something truly wrong, he deserves to have his contract terminated per the fine print. If ownership is being cheap and pulling dirty tricks then that's not cool and paints the ownership in a very bad light.

Well it looks like what he's being accused of is generally being an abusive asshole to his staff... we'll see if him actually being that way is the case. Since, so far, it's not anything like sexual harassment or racism some people might think the team is pulling a fast one. I however think that it sends a great message to potential future GMs and that message is that the Blazers don't abuse their staff. We'll have to wait and see how this all shakes out but I don't think we'll have to wait long.

Oh. So they are accusing Neil Olshey of being a dick.

I'm shocked. Shocked I tell you.
If the snake oil you're selling is that your a great guy but it turns out you're a dick... you likely end up out on your ass.

Well imagine how bad it is for Jody to move her ass for once

You could tell in press conferences, how Olshey was a dick to the reporters for asking legitimate critical questions. He must be a horrible boss and a bad human being.

Those reporters needed to be shoved in lockers and bullied more in high school according to some of our fellow posters. Oh. And it was ridiculous to call out Neil.

God. So much excuses for this franchise. Go ahead waste our time on this when we have bigger things to worry about

Sly tried to hire an independent investigator to look into allegations of me being a dick, but I told him to save his money. I already know I’m an asshole :devilwink:

his job is to create a bball team, not to be nice to anyone

"mental and physical stress", that shit is hilarious, its not his fault that there are some mentally fragile people... you dont like it, quit!

"At least one Portland employee has reported potential misconduct..."

this is a pathetic excuse for journalism.

Pathetic would be Canzano's version. He would have the same story followed by 8-10 paragraphs of naked speculation.

Oh bullshit. When the person in charge berates and insults employees, they either leave or are so miserable it affects their performance. Ever had to be screamed at for hours that you are stupid, worthless, incompetent? I had a boss who called a colleague on Thanksgiving while he was at his daughter's having dinner to berate him. He quit on the spot.

1.) With Jody stepping down, does that signal a sale of the team coming?

2.) How long till Olshey resigns over this?

oh shit i missed that. Okay this is not good. No clear ownership direction and a gm under investigation??
Right as we enter this season???
