How do we know Dame himself isn’t behind this? Clearly he and others were pissed when we were bounced out of the playoffs last year. Stotts is gone and he got the new coach he wanted.I seriously can't believe people are STILL defending Olshey.
Another Lillard prime year flushed down the toilet.

Whoaaaaaa it has been a long time since I've seen a post from you. Welcome back. How do we know Dame himself isn’t behind this? Clearly he and others were pissed when we were bounced out of the playoffs last year. Stotts is gone and he got the new coach he wanted.
Dammit dog. You stole my post.Hey, I haven't seen you in ages! Welcome!
There were rumors two years before that saying that LMA wanted out. The writing was on the wall. Plenty of people saw that he wasn't going to come back. His comments about wanting to retire as the best blazer ever were bullshit. He wanted to go to Texas. He wanted to be closer to his family. He never really liked Portland. He always felt like he was second fiddle and he had huge middle child syndrome. We should have dealt him.
Because not trading him was the best chance of the Blazers winning a title. Why shouldn’t he be criticized for not trading Aldridge? We knew years in advance that he wouldn’t be back.
If Aldridge wanted to stay he would have extended. As soon as he refused to take the max he was offered he should have been traded (obviously at the next opportune time).Disagree.
I believe Aldridge wanted to stay until I got injured. No it wasn't a guarantee, but it was a good risk for the Blazers to take as they had legit contender upside.
Trading Aldridge would've been a mistake.
Yes, but as your alter-ego, Mr. TV guy, not as the Real Person we know.I got about 88k
We let a perennial All star and (at the time) our best player walk for nothing. THAT was the mistake.Disagree.

It's all about the contract. If you have an all star caliber player unwilling to sign an extension you trade them before they can become an unrestricted free agent.Huh? We had like the 2nd best record in the West, up and coming superstar discovered as a sidekick for him, and LMA was pretty much all over the media saying he wants to retire as the best Blazer ever.
Once the trade deadline passed is when shit went south quick. So please tell me at what point do you trade him? Lol

To be fair, the extension we were able to offer was far less than what he could get as a free agent. It made absolutely no sense for ANY free agent to sign what we could present to him, IIRC.It's all about the contract. You let them know that they will never be unrestricted in Portland. Ever.
To add to this, I’m not sure why he couldn’t sniff it out when it was so obvious to some of us on here that he would leave.Absolutely. To those who say, "There's no way he could've known...." Well, it was his job to know. It was his job to sniff out the truth about Aldridge's actual motivations. Olshey has a huge salary and a lot of power, and in exchange he's supposed to have the relationships and instincts and analytical abilities that allow him to make smart roster moves that the average bulletin board poster doesn't see.
It is absolutely fair to point out Aldridge walking as a failure. Maybe given Aldridge's opacity, he shouldn't be crucified for it like he should for the 2016 contracts. But it's definitely a strike against him. When a franchise player walks for zero compensation, it always reflects badly on the GM.
So far this season, Lillard himself has been the biggest drag on this team's performance. Prime Lillard will make this squad a contender, if he resurfaces.I seriously can't believe people are STILL defending Olshey.

No it didn't work out. But it was the right choice at the time based on what was known then.

as Phat points out, if Aldridge was intending to stay in Portland he would have signed an extension. I'm not 100% positive, but under the CBA rules at that time, a max extension for Aldridge would have been equal to any max he would have received from any other team, EXCEPT it would have come with bigger step raises. So, he was turning down more money from Portland than he would have made anywhere else. That right there is a pretty significant indication he was not going to re-sign
it's true, that team was probably the closest Portland has been to contention since the Pippen team; they certainly haven't been closer since. But,IMO, it's also true they were much more pretender than contender. So then, trading Aldridge would not really have been risking a championship.
the Blazers were not going to get a lot for Aldridge if they traded him just prior to the deadline (about the time they traded for Afflalo). But whatever they would have received, was more than they ended up with. And, trading him in the off-season before that deadline would have likely brought back much more than at the deadline
I agree that on the list of Olshey miscalculations it ranks rather low....but it's certainly there
At some point in the 2 years prior he said he was leavingHuh? We had like the 2nd best record in the West, up and coming superstar discovered as a sidekick for him, and LMA was pretty much all over the media saying he wants to retire as the best Blazer ever.

are you sure that's true?
as I recall that CBA, if Aldridge would have re-signed with Portland in the 2015 off-season, he could have re-signed for 5 years with 8% step raises. Any other team would have maxed out at 4 years with 4-5% step raises. If Aldridge would have signed an extension in 2014, he would have been limited to 4 years, but he still would have received the 8% step raises. His max salary would have been determined by the 2015 salary cap in either case. Maybe I have that wrong, but that's the way I'm remembering it
so yeah, if he waited till 2015 he would have received that 5th year from Portland, but there were plenty of hints that 5th season wasn't his concern
False

We just saw the LMA Wes Batum Rolo Dame team win the first playoff series in 14 years, and they looked even better that next season.
It was worth seeing what that team could do. It would've been a mistake to break up that team.
After the trade deadline, I got hurt, the team fell apart and Aldridge left. It was a smart gamble, that had risk, but didnt work out. That is not a mistake. A GM should not be 100% risk averse.
maybe I'm recalling wrong, but didn't Aldridge, sometime long after he'd become a Spur, come out and say something like "the Blazer F.O. wanted me to say positive things about intending to stay a Blazer, so I did. Didn't mean it though"....?
https://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/2014/07/trail_blazers_lamarcus_aldridge_pledges_to_sign_co.htmlare you sure that's true?
