I didn't see Dame deferring to Aldridge... He created a ton for Aldridge. Getting Aldridge the ball in the post isn't "deferring to Aldridge". That's playing team basketball. It makes it easier for Dame (and the rest of the team) to get buckets. Same as getting the ball to Shaq wouldn't be Kobe deferring to Shaq.

If you aren't getting the ball to those guys at the basket then you are not playing good basketball. I don't think anybody is asking for Sharpe to play bad basketball.

*Edit* added (and the rest of the team)
Another thing to consider is the although Shae’s handle has improved GREATLY, it still isn’t at the level that he is comfortable to get a shot up at any time. There are times that I still see Shae turn the ball over in the PnR in crunch time and stuff like that, he’s going to eventually get there. If he had even Jalen Green’s handle right now, I think we would see the ball in Shae’s hands more down the stretch.

Would people say Tracy McGrady lacked KI?

That is a good question. I don't really think of Tmac as having the killer instinct like Jordan/Kobe. That's just a whole other level of crazy. I also thought of Vince Carter, but he played three years of college I believe. He was fearless his first five seasons or so.

Oh man… have you seen the clip of him single handedly beating San Antonio? It was insane.

Comparing deffering to an all-star in his prime (LMA) to a #3 option type player (Grant) isn't really an apples to apples comparison. We agree Dame in top tier when it comes to game-winner shots.

I also agree with you that we don't know for certain Sharpe has no killer instinct or if he doesn't, that he won't develop one. If I had to guess though, he's a #2 option type of guy.
I think its the exact same thing unless, until, Chauncey says Sharpe is THE GUY. If Grant then interferes with that, or Sharpe still defers then that is at issue. I find usually Sharpe passes correctly when a double team begins to form, or he sees he will have difficulty getting downhill. Especially if he's gotten his pocket picked that game (happens about every other game at least). The reason its the same is young guys don't think "hey that's an All-Star I need to defer" They think "Hey I'm still a newbie and that's a confident Vet and my shot looks just a bit questionable, I'm gonna defer.".

I think we agree that we can't know what Sharpe's level of killer instinct is yet. Calling your own number isn't a measure because if you call your own number, dribble into a triple team and still fire your shot (likely missing) I don't see that as killer instinct, but ball hoggery. Shapre is pretty clearly trying to make the team better. He needs to get more aggressive, but I see him doing exactly that over the end of last season and the beginning of this one. Sooner or later the light bulb will go off for him and he will start being more aggressive and still passing wisely, at least that's the hope.

13pts in 35 seconds...

I love it! I saw that game live it was INCREDIBLE. I also somehow saw Reggie Miller and his bajillion points in 15 seconds vs. the Knicks. Also the legendary duel between Chuck Person the rifleman and I forget if it was Bird or someone else known for 3's, but where they exchanged 3 after increasingly difficult 3. Great NBA action!

Skylar Mays certainly has the "killer instinct" if that's what it's called.

Mays held the ball the entire critical possession where the Blazers just needed 2 points to go up by 4 in the end of regulation.

Mays also should have tried to drain the clock as much as possible.

So what did "Killer Instinct" Mays do?

With 11 seconds left on the shot clock, Mays put his head down and dribbled in the middle of the lane surrounded by 4 Kings defenders.

As he dribbled in , he had an opening to Sharpe who had moved to edge of the key.

This most critical shot attempt and possession by Mays was his ugliest.

He didn't pass the ball to Sharpe. Maybe he never saw him.

Instead he went up right into Sabonis and his "shot" was swallowed up in Sabonis's arms.

But he has a Killer Instinct!

And on the last possession, Mays's Killer Instinct showed up again. He made the inbounds pass to Thybulle, who passed it back to Mays.

Then Mays called his own number once more, with the game TIED, he jacked up a contested 3-pointer.

Yup. Sometimes the best shot is the one you don’t take. Thats said Sharpe needs to increase aggression based on his incredible talent. That isn’t the same as Killer instinct. One can mature into it IMO.

His rating in 2K went from 78 to 82, so that's at least something.

I find it hilarious that I said he is driven, I said he is motivated, but for some reason people have focused in on killer instinct. The most important thing right now is that he keeps improving. Killer instinct is irrelevant. I said I haven’t seen it from him. I didn’t say that he would never have it. Can we stop talking about this now?

No. You hate Sharpe and we will continue to bring it up!

Sharpe had a significant dip in his shooting last year when he broke his finger. He now has a semi serious thumb injury on his shooting hand and I wonder how much that is affecting his shot.

Was thinking the same thing. You could tell he had pain in his hand after he got fouled on that dunk attempt. Badly missed the subsequent free-throw as well.

But also, a lot of his shots were down and then popped out. Just bad luck. He should have had 2-3 more shots. A couple of those were threes. It happens.

Thumb injury and ridiculous amount of minutes he's playing is what's effecting him. Especially in the fourth. Chauncey needs to pull his minutes back.

I love Shae and he has the tools and the body and the game to be great.

But we all know lots of players in this league have all three.

What set Kobe apart was his mamba mentality. He was an unnatural beast that way and it is beyond rare to find that. Indeed, that's a main reason why Kobe was Top 10 all time.

That doesn't mean Shaeden can't be great, he can, we all see that. but GREAT? Of that I am not so sure. Dominique Wilkins was great, but not one of the greatest.

Never understood why Kobe is put on such a pedestal. Only NBA major stat he leads all time is missed shots.

Sharpe does have some crazy untapped upside. Hope he continues to improve and realize more of it.

I look forward to when we talk about what makes Sharpe so great and not worry about who's traits he should try to emulate. IMO if we did bring up names Ginobili, Tmac, Vince, Wade, Kawhi, Booker, etc are all better to model your game after. Even the brief career of BRoy.

This is what Sharpe is capable of already. (Unfortunately, we have a coach who loves "point guard" of whatever quality so we don't see this enough.)

Here's another beautiful possession by Sharpe. This is what the Blazer offense should look like.

He isn’t a point guard and they’re playing him at point guard. At least he’s trying to pass lol

he hasn't learned when the best time is to terminate his dribble drive. He goes too far, too often, and ends up trying to pass thru a crowd

I just wonder if his mindset changes when he is playing point guard. He’s really trying to pass.
