Do you think a moderate Republican would even stand a chance in Oregon? You simply aren't winning in this state unless you're a Democrat.

I think part of that is because the Republican brand has been tarnished among non-Republicans over the years of them getting more and more extreme. I mean, you see that in California, where Republicans used to be very competitive and over time, their extreme stance on social issues has made them a pariah party. Now, sure, even a moderate Republican stands no chance...but that's because they carry the scarlet 'R'. I don't know Oregon politics, but I wouldn't be surprised if a similar dynamic has played out.

But it's to such an absurd extreme now. We re-elected Kitzhaber WHILE he was under investigation and had to immediately step down after taking office. I legitimately think a Democrat would win in Oregon even if he murdered someone because people would say "well he's still the lesser of two evils."

How many moderate Republicans are there? All must swear fealty to Trump.

Trump says he will refuse to endorse Republicans who vote for 'disgraceful' $1.2 billion infrastructure bill and lashes out at 'RINO' Mitch McConnell for voting with Democrats to push it forward
  • Senate voted 67-27 on Saturday to advance the infrastructure bill, which is backed by Biden
  • 18 Republicans, including Mitch McConell, voted in favor of moving it forward in the Senate
  • Donald Trump released a statement shortly afterward slamming the bill, trashing McConnell
  • He also threatened to withdraw support for the other 17 Republicans who voted in favor of advancing the bill for further negotiations

Bingo! I have no problem voting for Republicans I believe to be genuinely moderate and I voted for Knute Buehler in the last governor’s race. After he lost, he came out as a “Trump Republican” because that is the only hope he has of winning in the future. Same with Kim Thatcher for Secretary of State. I voted for her, she lost and then pulled a Knute. Fool me twice and I’ll vote for my dog over a Republican………

Knute had some tell-tale signs of Trumpy-ness. There was his support for the Wildlife Refuge takeover, and anti-vaxxing before anti-vaxxing was 'cool'.

Thanks for that! My freshman college economics prof started the year off in front of a class say much the same thing!
He also said money is not capital but the chalk you purchased with it, is, so dont steal or bogart the chalk !
Now there's another thing I'm forbidden to bogart.

For the most part, the GOP has become the cult of Trump. They have few real policies but to kiss Trump's ass to hang onto power, then use their power to enrich themselves, and it's rinse and repeat. They don't even hide it, but instead are proud of it. Absolute cowardice.

Dems aren't great, but the obvious choice of the lesser of the two evils for me.
Same here...

If Hillary would have run, and beaten Joe in primaries I would have written someone else in.

I don't know..... do you ever wonder why we don't vote for Republicans when it was a GOP governor who helped implement a lot of things that people love about Oregon?

and that Republican governor wouldn't even be a Republican in todays political game. He'd be a liberal democrat. Almost everything he stood for, is what progressives/democrats stand for. Public access (the socialist!) to the beach, the bottle bill/environmental activism (fake news!), urban growth boundaries (anti-capitalism!) and a state sponsored "rock festival" with loose laws regarding drug use (etc), proposed removing highways for public spaces.

the only (modern day) republicanism he had was keeping people out of the state of Oregon.

Remember secular humanism? During the 90s we heard how teaching secular humanism would do terrible things to our children. It was conflated with atheism, wrongly; not all atheists are secular humanists and not all secular humanists are atheists, and more accurately with culture wars as secular humanists support civil rights, keeping religion out of public schools, teaching science, etc. All this screaming by Republicans and on right wing media about how secular humanism was destroying America. We never hear about secular humanism any more.

Remember Sharia law? In the early 2000s local governments held hysterical hearings and passed resolutions banning imposition of Sharia law. No one was proposing instituting Sharia law in the US and the Constitution would clearly prohibit it. We don't hear much about imposing Sharia law.

Remember the Ground Zero mosque? Every time the Bush Administration got really bad publicity, and just before any election, Muslims were building a mosque at Ground Zero to use as terrorist recruiting facility. No Ground Zero mosque ever materialized. We don't hear much about that either.

Now we have white people hysterically protesting teaching critical race theory and state after state banning critical race theory, which has become ANY teaching about racial issues. Slavery, the so called 3/5 Compromise, Jim Crow segregation, lynching, extermination of Native Americans, internment of Japanese Americans, anything racial related is now "critical race theory" and must be banned so white people won't be uncomfortable. Mike Pompeo actually said Afghanistan fell to Taliban because Biden was paying too much attention to critical race theory which so far as I know he never mentioned.

Anyone see a pattern? Keep (white) people really scared of atheists and scary brown people so they vote Repubican?

Candace Owens is my hero.

Anyone who listens to, agrees with, and supports this self hating BITCH is snuggling right up next to racist, white supremacist ideologies.

Ask yourself why no black people like this bitch. Because she's a fucking shill for white supremacy. If she's your hero, that says A LOT about you...

This is fallacy. There's not a single republican looking to actually do anything except tear down "democracy" right now.

If they had good policy, and didn't concentrate on culture wars, maybe they could win. But they're too busy being racist, homophobic, and generally against people...

I'm pretty much solutions-based. Owens may very well be tooting the horn for change. Moreover, organizations such as the Woodson Center (whom I financially support) are in the trenches making the yoeman's efforts.

Not in Oregon. No they would not.
I tend to agree with @dviss1 on this one. I consider myself to be a genuine moderate. I believe that every American should get a “piece of the pie”, whether that is a Pollyanna attitude or not. In the 2018 state elections I voted for Knute Buehler and Kim Thatcher (both Republicans) because I thought the Democratic choices for those two positions were horrid (for good reasons in my eyes) and that Buehler and Thatcher were not only better choices, but that their elections might actually benefit the entire state, not just the Willamette Valley. Both Buehler and Thatcher lost. My disappointment was cut short when both those individuals announced that, in the wake of defeat they were both now “Trump Republicans” because they would have absolutely NO chance of winning in the future if they did not hook their stars to “the other guy”. It didn’t hurt that somewhere around 40% of Oregonians voted for Trump in 2020. Republicans CAN win in Oregon, but because we’re generally down on ALL Republicans (even the so called “good ones”) we run the risk of opening the doors wider to Trump Republicans. Yet again the price for refusing any and all compromises…….

Does the woodson center pay you to drop their link once a week? jeez

Many of ABM's posts read like he prefers black people who think black people are the problem and should deal with the effects of prejudice and bigotry themselves. (SlyPokerDog edit)
