The Portland Trail Blazers are hanging around playoff contention in the NBA's Western Conference, currently in fifth place ahead of the Feb. 8 trade deadline.

And as the deadline approaches, the Blazers may be looking to tweak their front court, and the Los Angeles Lakers have made no secret they are shopping forward Julius Randle .

Randle , 23, has played mostly in a reserve role this season as coach Luke Walton has gone with Kyle Kuzma or Larry Nance Jr . at power forward. But in recent starts, the former first-round pick (No. 7 overall) out of Kentucky was was averaging 16.8 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists. And he'll be a restricted free agent at the end of this season.

He might be a solid option for the Blazers, who are dealing with a struggling Jusuf Nurkic and waiting for more from Zach Collins , who has been averaging 5.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and shown flashes of brilliance in just 18.7 minutes per game since working into the regular rotation on Dec. 19. Would Randle and Collins make a good front court of the future in Portland?

What do you think? Should the Blazers trade for Julius Randle?

No. LAL wants ending contracts, and we don't have that without going deep into luxury tax. Randle's not worth that.

We wouldn't be able to sign both Randle and Nurkic and we would ave to somehow clear capspace for the Lakers as well.

Yeah. From a pure basketball standpoint Randle would be awesome to have. I guess we could offer Davis and a first. But then we’d have to trade some other guys (Vonleh for example) in separate deals as well.

I don't think either of them will command anywhere near as much as people think they will.

Randle will get $10M - $12M and Nurkic perhaps $2M more.

you wish Nurk gets 12 mil
he wont get less than 18 mil

From who?

Very few teams need new centers. The teams who were tanking this year will not pay $18M for a center because they will also want to tank next year.

Kings are the only team that could realistically offer him much in the Summer because they can't tank next year (they will owe the pick to Philadelphia or Boston). Bulls, Hawks, Mavericks and all other poor teams will look for cheap centers because they will want to be in lottery next year too. Well, maybe Suns could offer him something too. Thing is, both Suns and Kings could draft some of Bamba, Jaren Jackson, Ayton and Bagley this year so they'll be looking to develop their own bigs rather than buy.

Plus don't forget Cousins and Jordan will also be on the market. They will get more than Nurkic will.

I'd say that's kind of the point, right? If you're a team that needs a C, you can spend 4/150 maxing out Jordan (age 30-34) or Boogie (age 28-32) -- ~38M/yr-- or 4/110M (5/140M if we do it) maxing out Nurk age 24-28. (~29M/yr) Tossing a close-to-max deal at Nurk could make sense for a team needing a C like SAC or PHX. And all it takes is one RFA deal.

I don't think we're keeping Nurk for less than 22M/yr. That, frankly, may be a steal. :dunno:

If the team thinks they will need to pay $22 million, they should trade him now.
Jusuf Nurkic
2017-18: 14.6 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.2 bpg, 1.9 apg, TS% 0.493, PER 16.0
2016-17: 15.2 ppg, 10.4 rpg, 1.9ps, 3.2 apg, TS% 0.545, PER 21.1
Nurk Fever is gone. What remains is a serviceable starting center. It's hard not to be disappointed, but all things considered, he's only 23. My guess is he still has upside. Hopefully we see that upside in a Blazer uniform.

If they will take Leonard

I really do like Randle’s game... wouldn’t mind trading for him... but I like Vonleh better for the salaries they will get paid. Randle will get 12-15, Vonleh I’m guessing 8-10. I think 16-18 for Nurk

The problem with looking at stats right now is that if he goes on another 20 game tear to end the year then someone is going to pay him a lot of money.

FWIW, Nurk's minutes are down from 29 to 27.

His per 36 are stellar, IMO.

19.3PPG/10.6 RPG/2.5 APG/1.6 BPG

His DRtg is down from 104 to 102.

We're obviously missing the chemistry we had with him last season.

No one would complain about Nurk if he wasn’t asked to be the second or third option offensively. That’s not his fault. His offense is a work in progress but there are enough flashes there worth developing. But right now he would be best served in a Steven Adams type role where his main focus and responsibility would be anchoring the defense. Another reason why a third scorer would be a godsend for Portland. Collins has the best chance internally to be that guy. I wish we ran more plays for him.

He got comfortable....too comfortable

Without considering cash/future trades for said contract, etc. yes. He would instantly be an upgrade. We could permanently slide Aminu back to SF where he belongs and line up Lillard/CJ/Aminu/Randle/Nurkic

Randle is a solid player who is still young enough to develop with us.

I like it; what we really need is one more power forward. Especially an underachieving one. Best crappy bench ever!

Randle comes off the bench and puts up 13/7/2 in 23 mpg. Per 36 of 21/11/3. I wish all of our PFs underperformed like that.
He's also played the majority of his time this season at C.
Something like Davis, Swanigan, Layman for Randle and Hart gets us an intriguing backup, albeit a pending RFA, a young SG, and also gets us out of the LT this season.

Lillard/Napier
CJ/Connaughton/Hart
Turner/Harkless
Aminu/Collins
Nurk/Randle.

Maybe take out Hart, and include Leonard/Clarkson swap? With then routing Napier elsewhere afterwards? They shave $$ off of Clarkson next year, for free agency?
