On courtside they mentioned that if we are going to make a trade, which is a strong possibility, we have to do it before Miles' contract kicks in.

What is KP's plan-B now that Miles will likely come back onto the books?
 
We'll without a doubt make a deal before the deadline. Major trade or not, a deal will be made. IMO.

I don't think so. I could see us just waiting 'til the off-season unless someone Butler/Wallace calibre is available for the right price. Let Frye, Diogu, one or both of Blake/Outlaw walk and sign a few free agents.
 
I hope KP calls Chris Wallace in the middle of the night at around 3-4 a.m., proposing ridiculous trades like S-Bo, rights to Freeland and Kopponen, for Mayo, Gay and Conley.
And keep leaving messages on his voice mail.

I'd say the odds are against a deal.

Our biggest bargaining chip is the RLEC - but at any given time, only a limited number of teams is willing to trade talent for cap-space. Unless one of those teams can offer us an upgrade at either PG or SF, no deal is getting done.

Here's a question: would KP deal the RLEC for dead weight and a decent draft pick? Personally, I would prefer a mid lotto pick to a modest amount of cap-space - but I am not sure the Blazers see it that way.

Why does Miles's contract impact the timing of this trade (or possible trade) in the least?

I don't get that.

I would think that the only way it would effect them is by having to deal players by this deadline so they won't have to pay the luxury tax...since Miles contract kicks in retoactivly to his 10th game played...so his contract reflects in the offseason numbers calculated for the luxury tax....is that right?

Since contracts have to be traded for roughly equal value, trading Lafrentz or whomever else, means the Blazers will still have about the same amount of salary on their books -- thus luxury tax liability will be the same regardless.

The only pressure to get a deal done is if you think you can get the player you want now and his contract would exceed the Blazers cap room this coming off-season, which will be between 8-16 million (assuming Miles goes back on the books).

That's not exactly correct. Contracts only have to match within 125% + $100K on each side. That means that the Blazers could send Raef's $12,722,500 contract out and would only have to take back a touch over $10 mil back in salaries, thereby saving $2.7 mil in salary and another $2.7 mil in tax.

That said, I don't see what impact Mile's contract would have on the timing of such a deal. It just might impact the dollars that the Blazers are willing to take back.

Right. That's why I said "roughly equal," not "exactly equal"
 
They on't need to match if one of the teams is under the salary cap. I don't know who is under the cap at this current time.

So, before that, Portland still has it's full cap space. If they wait until later, there will be a $9 million hole cut from their cap space.

Remember, if you're under the cap, salaries don't have to match...so you can essentially "trade cap space."

Yes, but right now, this season's payroll is in effect, right? So we are over the cap no matter Miles's contract.
