Happy we didn't trade for this guy. Sure, with Lillard out we might not want him playing this season, but this looks like a recurring problem, not to mention he came to the Nets out of shape,
- Brooklyn Nets guard Ben Simmons has a herniated disk in his back, coach Steve Nash said prior to Monday night’s 114-106 win against the Utah Jazz. Nash remains optimistic that Simmons will play at some point this season, but with just 11 regular-season games left, the organization is running out of time for the former All-Star to make his season debut. Simmons had an epidural last week to alleviate some pressure in his back. “He’s had this a couple years ago, so he’s had [herniated disks] throughout his career at some points,” Nash said. “And I guess there was a flare-up. I’m not sure when they recognized it was beyond a back flare-up and a herniated disk or what not, but somewhere along the line there, that was the reason for the epidural.”

Let’s start with the documentary that you have coming up. It’s on Title IX, and I know it’s supposed to air during the men’s Final Four. Is this the debut film from Baby Hair Productions? Candace Parker: Yes, it is the debut film and I’m excited that it’s at home on Turner’s networks. And I don’t know, I just think that this is a passion project that has been, you know, coming to light for a while. This is my baby in terms of what I’ve been super passionate about. Because I feel like I am a result of Title IX, I have the opportunities that I have as a result of Title IX. And I think, being able to tell the story from my eyes of the many women and many people that have been involved with bringing this and bringing these opportunities to the next generation, just being able to tell it through my lens of being in the middle of two generations, where my mom didn’t have the opportunity to play basketball in college – she was ‘72 to ‘76. That’s right when Title IX was enacted.

Media, Candace Parker
Yeah, for sure. Okay, so can you tell me a little bit about just your role at Turner, and NBA and NCAA coverage. You do a terrific job. Was broadcasting something you always knew you wanted to transition to eventually? Candace Parker: Thank you. It really is fun, because I think it’s the second best job in the world. You know, if I’m not playing basketball, then I definitely want to be talking about it. So, to me just being able to watch March Madness and be able to watch the NBA, be able to cover the really fun and cool games. I mean, it’s a dream. It does come with work and obviously there are days that it’s more difficult than not but I’m telling you, it is so much fun to be able to watch something that you genuinely are interested in and to be able to cover it and that be considered your job.”

For one, LeBron has another year left on his contract. So if he were to try and get back to Cleveland for next season, when the Cavs could be really good, Cleveland would either have to trade a bunch of the young players that are part of the team’s exciting core — which LeBron really likes — and probably throw in Kevin Love’s expiring $30 million contract, which the Lakers probably wouldn’t want in a rebuild. Two summers from now, LeBron would be a free agent, but he’s said his last goal in the NBA is to play with his eldest son, Bronny, who as of now will be NBA draft-eligible in the summer of 2024. The easiest, most logical place for the James family to play together is in Los Angeles, where the Lakers, with Paul’s help, can draft or sign him as a free agent. It’s much cleaner if Paul tries to direct Bronny to a team where his dad already plays.

D.J. Augustin, who joined the Lakers just in time for the bottoming out, said he senses a shift within the locker room. “Internally we feel like we’re a great team and we can do something special,” said Augustin, who was perfect from the field on seven shots and buried six 3-pointers. “Make a run. Get into the playoffs. And make a run in the playoffs.”

Augustin did not miss a shot in the first half, making all six of his shots from the field and all five of his threes, for 17 first-half points. He didn’t miss a shot the entire game, going seven for seven from the field and six for six from three-point range. Augustin credited LeBron James and Russell Westbrook for having faith in him and passing him the ball during the Lakers’ 131-120 win over the Cavaliers. “Just being ready to shoot,” Augustin said. “Playing with guys like Bron and Russ, they create and draw so much attention and they’re so willing at passing and finding guys. Maurice Creek had only been in Mykolaiv for six weeks. It was dumb luck that he was there at all. He was replacing another American player on the Ukrainian SuperLeague team. The 31-year-old Creek was living the life of a professional basketball player abroad, going from team to team, country to country, year after year. He was originally going to play this season in China, but that deal fell through. In January, he got a call from a former coach of his on a team in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital; Mykolaiv, which had been struggling all season, needed a player. Creek needed a gig. Now, he was stuck there. He didn’t know any Ukrainian. Before the war began, he Google Translated with fans who chatted him up on the street. Now, he got his news about what was happening primarily from his family back in Maryland and his American teammates via group chat in Mykolaiv.

Ukraine, Maurice Creek
Storyline: Ukraine War
“They were trying to find a way to get to CNN and find out where the bombs were coming from and stuff,” Mo Creek says now, from the safety of his parents’ home in Upper Marlboro, Md. “They were telling me, ‘Dude, they’re getting very close to (your) area.’ We was already getting news like, Kharkiv had just got bombed. Kyiv had already had the tanks over there; a tank just ran over a car with somebody driving it. They was like, Odessa Airport was just bombed; that’s where I was supposed to get my flight (out of the country) from. I was definitely getting the news. It was just a crazy thing to hear the information and know that we might have to go to one of these borders to even get out.”
– via David Aldridge @ The Athletic
Ukraine, Maurice Creek
Creek spent the next several days, when it was safe, shuttling back between his apartment – which, like most buildings in Mykolaiv, was pitch black most of the day – and, after the air-raid sirens went off, the bomb shelter. Creek contacted his family and basketball community when he could, with increasingly dire messages. “When he was hunkered down in that bomb shelter, he sent me a voicemail,” said Joseph, Creek’s coach at GW. “It sent chills down my spine, just to hear the worry in his voice about not being able to get out. He was on his way out, and he heard the sirens, and he had to shelter. I can’t believe he was in that situation.”
– via David Aldridge @ The Athletic
Ukraine, Maurice Creek
Even though Creek is back home, he remains worried for his Ukrainian teammates who couldn’t leave. “I try to text them on a group chat every day – are you guys good, what’s going on with you guys?” he said. “I got a couple of texts back from some guys actually saying they’re OK, they’re with their families. So, I’m at peace. But I definitely do pray for everybody that’s in Ukraine. I knew 80 percent of the league, playing against them. But I’m not talking about basketball; I’m talking about all of Ukraine. They didn’t want no parts of this. They’re just trying to do what they need to do for their families.

Quin Snyder an option for Lakers?
Marc Stein: Yet as the playoffs draw near, with the Jazz mired in the fourth slot in the West since Jan. 17 and having convinced few NBA observers over the course of the season that they are headed for a long-awaited postseason breakthrough, no one in Salt Lake City has league insiders musing about his future like Coach Quin Snyder. In discussions with numerous officials from rival teams in recent weeks, I’ve heard questions raised repeatedly about how much longer Snyder, now in his eighth season in Utah, will remain there. As covered in my previous This Week In Basketball column, Snyder has been increasingly mentioned as a potential target for San Antonio to succeed Gregg Popovich. I’ve likewise heard Snyder’s name posed as a probable Los Angeles Lakers candidate should the Lakers and Frank Vogel part ways after what has been a nightmare season in Hollywood.

Snyder has ties to both teams after a three-season stint as San Antonio’s G League coach in Austin and one season as a Lakers assistant under Mike Brown. It’s crucial to note, of course, that Snyder is not currently projected to be a coaching free agent at season’s end. The 55-year-old’s precise contract situation is not publicly known, but he signed an extension with the Jazz before the 2019-20 season that, according to an ESPN report at the time, added “multiple years” to a deal that had two seasons remaining. NBA coaching sources nonetheless insist that Utah has been unsuccessful in its attempts to extend Snyder’s contract further, leading to the belief that the coach tied for the league’s third-longest active coaching tenure alongside Golden State’s Steve Kerr might be more gettable than advertised.

The Bulls have been in a funk since the All-Star break, and LaVine, who missed games around that time with knee discomfort, has talked about playing more aggressively as the Bulls floundered. Did he sense it was his time to take over in the third? Well, he wouldn’t quite go that far. Scoring 14 points in five minutes isn’t exactly an out-of-body experience for a professional bucket-getter. But it was clear his approach changed at that moment from earlier in the game when he was more focused on setting up teammates. “Reading the game, trying to be aggressive there,” said LaVine, who scored 26 points on 9-of-18 shooting. “Just reading the game and going from there.”

Brooklyn Nets guard Ben Simmons has a herniated disk in his back, coach Steve Nash said prior to Monday night’s 114-106 win against the Utah Jazz.

All we have to do is be ready to catch and shoot and knock it down. Just staying ready. That’s the biggest thing.”

So why isn’t that applying to the MVP race?
Giannis Antetokounmpo: Nah, I want another championship. You know, like, the joy that I felt when I won the MVP was unbelievable. I was with my family. I wish my (late) Dad was there. That was an unbelievable feeling. Grateful. But the joy that I felt when I won a championship, there’s no comparing. There’s no comparing (an MVP) to the joy of being on the bus and seeing 200,000 people celebrating — White, Black, Hispanic, or whatever the case may be. Everybody was celebrating, and you’re giving everybody that joy. There were people that had never seen a championship for 50 years. (They’d say), ‘The last time I saw the championship, I was two years old.’ You know? That’s a different type of joy. It’s not just me being able to win the award. The whole city won an award. That’s what I want, you know? And hopefully, God can bless me and give me that. I’ll do whatever I can do to do it.

Ben Simmons has a herniated disk in his back, coach Steve Nash said prior to Monday night’s 114-106 win against the Utah Jazz.
