I don't recall exactly but it was probably somewhere around '72. The thing was vibrating like hell as I approached top speed. One of the many dumbest things I've ever done.
I've been caught drinking, twice as a driver and once as a passenger when driving somewhere. First time was in Portland around 1966, the officer stopped me and then asked me where I lived. I told him accross town in in the West hills. He told me to follow him to my house which I did. That was that.
Before I get to the second time, one time I was driving home drunk and did a 360 while driving up Broadway Drive. Dumb beyond belief.
The second time was when I was a passenger in Florida. Three of us were cruising around looking for something to do when this one guy directs us to a business that was closed for the night. We drove around back and there was a beer vending machine that you could drive up to. It had a sign that said you had to be 21 to use the machine but we just laughed and put in a series of quarters and bought cans of beer at 25 cents each. We then got stopped by a police officer. As the conversation progressed we started laughing and he started laughing. He then told us to drive slowly and carefully home. You'll be amazed to believe that's just what we did. That as also about 1966.
The third time was when I was renting my mother's house in Lake Oswego. I had been drinking that night and was on my way home. I got about half a block from my house when I got stopped by a policeman. I'm sure he could tell I was drinking heavily but I think it was the same person that lived a half a block from me as kids. He later became chief of police in Lake Oswego. I told him where I lived and he let me go.
I hardly drink at all now, Maybe One drink every 2 to 4 weeks. On special occasions, I might have two and once every couple of years or so I'll have three. My wife and I take turns driving if we're drinking.
You'd never get away these days with what I got away with nor should you, but I thank those officers for letting me and my friends go.
Good people can do stupid and even bad things. That doesn't mark them forever.
Am I a good person? I try very hard to be but I know I miss the mark here and there. Whenever I fail in that endeavor and I realize it, sometimes much later, I regret it.
Geez, there's my life story. Oh, not all of it. I've done other dumb stuff and I've got the ex wife to prove it.
