App says we are getting a signal.....CenturyLink says we are getting a signal. Sounds like it's the modem.....is that the box that sends the signal to the house, or is that the one mounted on the wall?

They say that's MY equipment that they sold to us.

Can I just go buy a new one?

with inflation and your lawnmower wages? Probably not.

Don’t get stuck in the ice storm tomorrow! We’ve seen this movie one two many times around the Portland area. Will there be abandoned cars tomorrow?

When I was just a little girl
I asked my mother, what will it be
Will cars be abandoned tomorrow?
Here's what she said to me
Qué será, será
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Qué será, será
What will be, will be

I have a NJ house over 136 years old with stone rubble foundation walls. After water seepage and a stream of water entering my walls, I decided that the sump system was only a stop gap measure. Yesterday, on January 15th, I had the perimeter trenched because the masonry contractor advised it. Of course, with the luck I have, it snowed three inches last night and is still happening today. WTF

Three killed after power line falls on car in NE Portland, officials say

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Portland Fire & Rescue says three people died Wednesday morning after a power line fell on a car in Northeast Portland.

Officials say a branch fell onto a power line and the power line then fell onto a car, killing three people, two adults and a teenager.

Portland Fire tells KATU News that a two-year-old survived. They were taken to a local hospital.

Crews were dispatched just before 11:45 a.m. to the 12300 block of Northeast Siskiyou Street.

Geez that poor toddler!

Well fuck!

My mom's funeral is Tuesday. Not sure what to do.

Okay, shit is getting comical.

Got my mom's funeral moved to Friday.

This happened today, this is the road in Clackamas right next to my parents house.

And now there might be more freezing rain on Friday.

So main roads around NE Portland are clear and fine…..BUT FAMS…..the side streets are STILL treacherous! Took us like 10 minutes to get to the car on the street! Still an ice rink out there in the neighborhoods…..be safe.

When I first started working at Ace part time I bought myself and my wife each a pair of shoe chains. Hadn't had a real need for them until this week and have been ever so glad we had them. The dogs are grateful also, as they have not yet missed a walk, regardless of how icy it has been. I can't recommend them enough.

Last night, finally got above zero for the first time since the cold front started. But, at the cost of 10" of new snow.

Spent 4 hours charging the batteries in the tractor and pickup. The cold was brutal on batteries. Nothing would start without charging.

Heard a number of reports from EV owners being very frustrated. The cold reduces their EVs range, and take much longer to charge. Some claim charging lithium batteries when the temp is below freezing, can damage the batteries. Not sure how true that is?

I can say from experience that my Prius has been an iceball every winter since 2013 when I bought it new and the battery has never run down nor the range ever diminished. My 4 wheel drive Xterra has more problems in the cold with a dead battery than my lithium hybrid has ever had. I don't have a garage so my vehicles all are exposed to the winter. My property gets a lot of ice and snow that the valley doesn't get....part of being a hillbilly I guess. Hybrids and EVs need to be started up once a week minimum to keep battery life. we left for a fishing trip once and had to jump start it when we got back but it had sat a couple of weeks.

Never heard of any problems starting or running an EV in the cold. Only that the colder it is, the less range it has. Anywhere from 10-30% decrease in range, which returns to normal when it is warm again. Also, that the charging time increases in the cold, but back to normal when warm.

Heard this so many times, I almost believe it.

Shit man….. our side streets in the neighborhood in NE Portland are worse than ever. Even MORE slick than yesterday! Busy streets just fine. But it takes us like 10 minutes just to get to the cars on the street!!!

But how long does it take to get to the cars on the street?

I can say that that doesn't hold true with my hybrid...it doesn't change performance seasonally at all. When you buy one they tell you you have to start it once a week minimum, so that's the only issue I can think of. Lot of big car folks have had scary stories about hybrids but I can assure you, they are not true in most cases. I was told when I bought it new by many non hybrid owners that my battery life would be shortened after a few years....it's been 11.5 years and no signs of regression. Also it's zero issues for maintenance...can't say that about my Xterra at all. I've had to replace all kinds of stuff on it and both the vehicles have pretty much the same mileage on them since purchasing
