No I don't think I know what every black guy means... that's the point and I don't feel I know how you use the word as a straight white male... that's why I'm asking you. You have the right to call anyone anything you want for sure, we all have that right, but I would recommend you consider your surroundings. The DRSEUF comment isn't a racial or gender slur so I don't how it relates to this subject at all.

The word boy to me means a male human under the age of 18 and it is not demeaning in and of itself.

If you didn't catch on to this trend a long time ago he just hit the right buttons. I wouldn't be surprised if his kid isn't doing half the tweeting.

That was the entire point of the discussion. That someone could say something you think is a racial slur and not mean it as such. Or even that what you consider a slur isn't necessarily one.

You've already said you can say bitch to your friends if you want. Context, the beginning and end of story.

As for bitch, I use it equally for a man and a woman. It means what you think it means. A person who complains a lot.

If women feel that describes them more than it does men....sorry.

Why would I call an adult male a boy? That would be demeaning. I can call a male child, a boy and it's not offensive.

Don't hold your superior logic back on my account, I can handle it. But sure, I'll go ahead and stop because some anonymous person on the internet who I've never met and don't care about accuses me of nonspecific insinuations I've made on the board on other topics. That really hurts, I'm cut to the core.

I refer to buddies of mine as "my boys" all the time. Not demeaning at all. They're "boys" because we're tight. It has nothing to do with their age, their maturity, their stature, or their value.

I refer to my wife as "my girl" all the time, and it's not demeaning. It's a term of endearment. When we're in our 80's, she'll still be "my girl".

As has been stated elsewhere, context is everything.

Explain to me how you would use my own logic against me if you didn't think your own logic was superior to mine? It has nothing to do with you being male.

I totally agree with you, I was trying to be really clear with that particular poster because I felt my words were being twisted. I call my hubby "my boy" all the time because I love him and he's the bomb! Just like I can use the other B word with my girlfriends and it can be a term of endearment.

I think I should also say that I'm starting to think I might be coming across as really angry or worked up about the subject but I'm not a "black and white" person at all. I see nuances but also feel words are important and we shouldn't forget their origins if they were used to describe a person considered inferior at the time. For instance, I'm a Christian so when people say "God Damnit" or the name Jesus Christ in vain it really bothers me but I rarely say anything because the real meaning has become so diluted and it's so common people don't even realize they're saying it half the time.

Yes and Yes, I can attest to the second from experience.

But I guess I am just barely sensitive enough to catch the clue when I offend someone with this familiarity. I won't make the error again because it usually is the beginning of not referring to them period.

The world is changing fast... working in the corporate world you're constantly having to go to training on things you can say, subjects you can discuss, etc. because they're so afraid of getting sued. You have to be so careful anymore. I would like to think these discussions on the board are an attempt to understand each other. I'm not trying to offend anyone and I'm trying not to get offended. I once got called into HR because I was chatting with a friend after hours (but still in the office) about George W. and the rest of the "Republican scum" lying about weapons of mass destruction and going to war ... someone overheard (I never knew who it was) and they were offended. I got some early training on watching my language and giving my opinion in public but fortunately didn't lose my career. Like most people, I've made inappropriate jokes in the work place in the past but I am super paranoid about doing it now!

Hmm a gender slur...ok. If someone feels demeaned by a word then its a slur even if it wasn't the intent. It was taken thay way....then your going to mock little people come on man
