I thought it was cool that this one particular stat, AST%, confirms EXACTLY what we've seen with our own eyes. Many posters have commented on how much better the second unit is playing with Maynor compared to Price or Nolan, and his AST% explains why. He runs the offense well, creates for his teammates and does a great job finding the open man.

I think this makes him a very desirable back-up PG. He doesn't have the scoring ability to be a starter, but the flow and ball movement is great for getting the bench guys involved by getting them easy baskets. I know it's a long season and guys like Leonard, Freeland and Claver are learning as they go, but I can't help but wonder how much further along they'd be if we'd had Maynor on opening night.

Um, no. Assist percentage is an estimate of the percentage of teammate field goals a player assisted while he was on the floor. The volume or frequency of field goals scored while a player is on the floor doesn't really enter into the equation. The formula for assist percentage is 100 * AST / (((MP / (Tm MP / 5)) * Tm FG) - FG).

Now, a higher assist percentage might mean that he's providing easy shots for the other players, but it doesn't necessarily correlate to higher scoring numbers overall.

He has a point. Maynor had 12 assist the Timberwolves game. Thats at least 22 points assisted. On top of whatever points he scores. He could score 0, that 22 points assisted coming from a backup PG is pretty darn good in my book. Theres no arguing our bench is like night and day when Em got here.

Where I had it wrong is that it just means more baskets are assisted, not necessarily that there's more baskets (there could have been a lot of one-on-one points before that are now assisted, meaning the upgrade in points isn't 1:1 with AST%) - totally legit mental misfire on my part. Plus, Maynor is playing about 1/3 to 1/2 of his time with starters and Lillard while subbing for Matthews.

Observationally, however, our offense is running much better with Maynor than with either previous backup PG.

Maynor is driving his price up. How much will he get this summer? The guy could probably starting for 1/3 of the teams in the league.
