So Sad, No More Twinkies

I think there is a perception out there that if you don't have a degree, that you are not as valuable and your salary should be capped. And businesses can take advantage of these worker by not compensating them properly because they lack a degree (or many other reasons). These are people, many, who have devoted their life to the company and helped them succeed as much as the guys in the coat and tie.

Without a union, individually, it is a small voice that can easily be replaced and the individual can't really afford to start all over. But united, the blue collar workers can be heard and compensated for everything they have given to the company over a lifetime of work.

With regard to Hostess:I think what happened sucks and everybody losses . . . but was inevitable.

We've shown we're really bad at trying to determine "fair" wages. Let the market decide, with a pre-determined floor (i.e., a minimum wage which is lower than the current one).

The judge is giving the union one more chance. They'll fuck it up, because it's not in their interests to capitulate. For the union, driving a company out of business is a sign of their power. And the union always puts its own interests ahead of its members.

What a bunch of suckers these factory workers are. They should decertify before they lose their jobs.

The market decides what your pay is. If you don't possess a skill that is in demand you won't be compensated handsomely. Unless you're in a union I guess.

I somewhat agree with this. Which means this whole term of being "underemployed" or 'underpaid" shouldn't exist. And those with degrees getting paid 30K/yr should also not be complaining because the market decides what they get paid.

Of course this gives the corporations and big business even more power to screw with the labor market . . . but I get the idea.

Why stop there, why impose a pre-determined floor? Less gov't regulation is good right?

Not always. I'm not an anarchist; I believe in limited government. I do think the idea of a minimum wage is a good one, but I think it should be lower.

What is the harm in letting the market set the minimum wage?

There's no real harm. I simply worry about exploitation of the mentally and physically handicapped. Also, if wages drop enough, the incentive will be not to work, because it will pay to be on welfare.

I agree that there should be some protections from corporations exploiting workers. Of course where that line of protection should be is what is up for debate.

The mediation talks failed....

The company has blamed union wages and pension costs for contributing to its unprofitably. Hostess Chief Executive Gregory Rayburn has also said the company's labor contracts have deterred would-be bidders for the company and its assets.

Here's what each side previously agreed to:

Teamster Union concessions:

•8 percent immediate pay cuts, which would go down to 5 percent next year
•Hostess will reduce contributions to the health plan by 17 percent
•Hostess will freeze pension contributions until 2015

Management concessions:

•Gave Teamsters 25 percent share of company stock
•Gave Teamsters two seats on the board
•Gave Teamsters a $100 million claim in bankruptcy
•Won't permanently freeze pensions contributions
•Former CEO's head on a platter: board ousted Brian Driscoll in March, 2012, after it was revealed his salary was tripled to $2.5 million at the same time he demanded steep pay cuts for workers

Hold it!

Oboma should step in , like he did for GM and purchase the company. Then he can give most of it to the unions....

Well, that are "too big to fail".

there ya go!

socialize it like GM and then sell off part of it to some french company that has no idea how to make a cupcake...give the banks some more money that they in turn can lend to the US gov to pay for the company...man, ya have to keep the unions afloat

we need to....

when I first caught this post the otherday, I treated it as a joke.

As you may or may not know I do not follow one side or the other, rather try to catch all sides of an issue and make up my own mind..

This AM I was listening to KBOO out of PDX and the topic was on how there is an agenda to make all businesses sign a mandate that if they acted aginst the "peoples interest" the government would be allowed to step in and take over or liquidate that business..

vague wording and cloaked intent aside, these guys were serious...

yay another conservative on this board, just what we need

The Left is funny. They love free speech, but only when it agrees with them. I prefer open and honest debate and dialogue.

nobody agrees with me, man. i'm just commenting on the surprising amount of fiscal and social (though less so) conservatism on this board.

I love a good debate too, but I'm feeling outnumbered.

Surprising the conservatives didn't come out and vote. Romney. Meh.

I would argue there are more on the Left on this board than the Right. We do have a majority of the loudmouths and a-holes, however (and I count at least as one in each column) :ghoti:
