Spencer Hawes v. Greg Monroe

I can't believe the answer isn't a unanimous "Greg Monroe" continent upon keeping Batum, Lillard, Aldridge.

Virtually everyone outside of Portland, if you look at the tweets by the "major" people, think that core four is TOP NOTCH.

He is 24. He rebounds. He can score. He's a beast in the paint and has a solid mid range game and an underrated passer. Not to mention the flexibility he allows us with the unknown of the LMA situation (although I'd assume LMA re-signs with us at this point).

I might not know what I'm talking about at all, but I would think Olshey's #1 objective would be to sign Hawes and then send him to detroit for Monroe if Detroit agrees to that. That way worse case scenario is you signed Spencer Hawes, best case you turn that into Greg Monroe who I think is our real Target. Is this at all a possibility? Or are there restrictions on doing something like that?

You can't sign with a new team and immediately be traded, I think you have to wait either A) year or B) a different length of time, maybe January?

However, trading for Monroe and then using our MLE on Hawes, I think works...

Are u serious?! U wouldn't want a player because he's a republican?
I really don't understand this at all. Why would you at alll care about a players political beliefs. I mean, if our players were Green-Party Nation-of-Islam members who funded abortion clinics, it wouldn't make me root for them any less.

Yes. I want to like the players that I root for. Now, I like some Republicans, and hate plenty of non-Republicans and Hawes sounds like he's not too bad, but it's one element. If Hawes got in a fight with Dwight Howard, I'd probably root for Hawes (not that that would save him from being killed) even if Howard is a Democrat. I know some people never had a problem with rooting for Ruben Patterson, but it really turned me off the team. (No, I'm not equating being a Republican with being a rapist, I'm just responding to the "I don't give a shit about anything about on the court" meme.)

Why are you liberals so intolerant?

Haven't you been paying attention? We're Nazis at heart. That's also why we want your guns.

I don't think you can sign a free agent from another team and then trade him like that.

If getting Monroe doesn't require us to give up on any of our starters, he's the unanimous choice by landslide. Problem is, I doubt Detroit will give us Monroe unless we give one of them up (most likely batum). And if that's the case, then I say "fuck no"

Totally, who gives a shit. I don't care if Spencer comes to town and walks around with teabags hanging from his fucking head, as long as he keeps hitting that three at a 41% clip.

As an Englishman, the whole "Tea Party" thing enrages me as much for the waste of tea as it does anything.

(It's also pretty hilarious that the original Tea Partiers dressed up as Native Americans because they were totally chickenshit.)

Woah now you think republicans are in the same light as a rapest? Holy Shit man!!! I never knew you hated republicans gm that much?!

No shit. Now you know why our political system is so fucked up. You have stupid knuckleheads on both sides pointing the finger at the other (it's a fairly small minority all-in-all), with the majority stuck in the middle asking, "Why are you so stupid?" but all the while not really giving a fuck because the system is fucked.

Lamest. Reasoning. Ever.

Matthews OR Lopez, I'd be willing to give up for Greg Monroe.

Have any plans for Fourth of July weekend? The rez totally has the best fireworks.

LMAO! love it

I initially shared this point of view. But with Kyrie just signing a 5 year max, and Lillard's contract coming up, I think we'd be playing with fire bringing in Monroe on a fat contract.

Anyone who thinks giving up Lopez for Monroe is a good idea, is a SlyPokerDog! A BIG, FUCKING, SLYPOKERDOG! All three of the bigs (Monroe, Hawes, Frye) are shit on defense. Lopez is the real reason we made a 22 win jump. You lose him without replacing a similar defensive caliber player, then you are quite fucked!

I haven't even mentioned LeBron. All I'm saying is I doubt any agent would list Portland as a suitor to get more money. Chill out. Only guy I haven't been giddy about is hawes but even then I'd be ok with him if it only cost us freeland and wright. How is that whining? Tell me now.

I just find the correlation between when you wanted to get Lebron (which I agreed with you), to now we're not, and you seem frustrated. I could have read it wrong but that's how it came out to me. That's why I asked you, although rather rudly, my bad on that part.

Player vs player for the Blazers, It's Monroe. We need a consistent low post threat to make our shooters more deadly, not a stretch 5

Giving up any of our starters for Monroe would be a mistake. He is a big name that is god awful on D and in 4 years has shown zero care about that side of the ball. He would be a great weapon off the bench but at his price tag and what it takes to get him degrades his value to the Blazers.
Hawes is a better fit for the team, will be overpaid but so will monroe so that doesnt matter too much, but his ability to shoot will add a potent option to a bench that badly needs it. Hawes is also a surprisingly good passer.

So you would argue Thomas Robinson is not that player?

I don't know that it's and either/or situation with respect to Hawes and Monroe. Hawes would be an outright signing using the MLE and Monroe would be a sign-and-trade deal. They certainly could play together with Hawes stretching the defense and Monroe playing under the boards. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but a front court combo of LMA/Lopez & Hawes/Monroe would be epic.

I do agree with this concept as well. Having Aldridge as our only low post threat is a problem, but then again; SAS did win the title without a true low post threat.

What if you could get Hawes on a "sign and trade" with Wright and Leonard being the pieces? Then you would have MLE to use on another player. Maybe use that MLE to get a legit back up PG? Maybe Chalmers?

Maybe we need a stretch 5 to open up easier driving lanes for our wings who generally have mediocre ball-handling skills?

It wouldn't be so bad this year if Hawes signs for the MLE at $5.3M and Lopez is still at $7M. We'd be dumping some salaries to take on Monroe. Might get painful next year if Lopez is looking for a big raise.
