Spurs fans grade LMA first preseason game

Do I think for a second that LaMarcus is going to be the guy that leads the Spurs to another NBA title? Not by a country mile. But everybody declaring his career D.O.A. in San Antonio and crowing about how awful he has looked in the preseason will probably be singing a different tune in May and June.

For one thing people are foolish to bet against Popovich finding a winning a formula with that roster. Hell even if LaMarcus' statistics are down in the regular season this year, this team will probably be a very tough out in the playoffs when it counts. Aldridge doesn't even need to be their best player to be a serious threat in the playoffs, he can probably be the Spur's "Rasheed Wallace" and I wouldn't be shocked if they made it to the WCF.
I agree with you, I think the Spurs actually win a title but it is much more fun to bash Lamarcus for dumping us like an ugly prom date

My money is on the Cavs, but I think the Spurs are going to be very, very close. A lot of what happens depends on health (as always).

But he wants to be their best player. He made it clear to Udoka that he wanted his stats and didn't want to sacrifice shots.

You can't really deny that he looks like flabby. That's a new development for him. Usually he looks lean and motivated.

The Spurs are being extremely overrated. Their backcourt is pretty poor, Parker is way closer to a lower tier starter than an all star these days, Manu is pretty much finished, Danny Green is a nice 3&D guy but nothing elite, and Patty is a nice guy to come off the bench... But not much more.

They'll really have to rely on the health of Leonard (because lord knows who their backup 3 is...) and Duncan. Their front court looks stacked but imho they're more bark than bite.

Allbitch / West
Duncan / Diaw / Bonner

While I agree, I'm absolutely LOVING all the hate he's getting, and relishing in every mediocre stat line and misguided quote. Schadenfreude at it's finest!
But I don't doubt Pops' ability for a second - if anyone can turn LMA into an effective basketball player it's Pops. At the same time, LMA isn't very skilled when it comes to raw fundamentals, he isn't very smart as a person or a player, and he has a weak psyche - so I think there's equal chance for success and failure. What will win out? Pops' amazing coaching abilities, or LMA's general weakness?

Yeah, he doesn't look like he has in the past. Who knows, maybe he added bulk because he thinks he's going to be splitting more time at center? Whatever the case, I suspect that if he wants to lose the weight it'll be fairly trivial for him.

I agree with the psyche part, but the rest is just . . . "c'mon man."

Really?
Dribbling - horrible
Passing - horrible
Picks - horrible
Court vision - horrible
Help defense - horrible
Catching passes - not great
Rebound positioning - not great
Jump shooting - average
Footwork - average+

Sometimes he can be a beast in the post, but not often enough for it to be considered a strength. That, coupled with defending other bigs one-on-one are the only things that could be considered strengths.

Pops is going to so totally mind fuck LMA. But in the end LMA will become a better player than he ever was in Portland.

God forbid I get into situation where I'm defending a player I didn't even like all that much, but I think that's just a little bit skewed. You and I both agree that we're glad he's with another team, because there was no fucking way this team was going to win a title with LMA as its linchpin, so bon voyage!

Or he will pout, mope, and withdraw into himself.

LMA might do that for a while but eventually Pop, Duncan, et al will get his mind right.

"What we've got here is a failure to communicate..."

Pop wasn't able to get Dennis Rodman to produce, and Rodman was arguably the best rebounder of all-time. He performed in Detroit and won championships, and he performed in Chicago and won championships. If Pop is so great, why wasn't he able to get Rodman to produce in San Antonio with Robinson?

Probably because Pops wasn't the Spurs coach when Rodman played there.

Lamarcus needed a father figure..that's why they call him Pops..so now he's back in school and he's an underclassman

It's so much more fun to have LMA on a different team.

Just think if it was the Lakers, though!

You are correct, and you can't underestimate the value of a good mind-fucking.
