A full quarter of ignoring that a basketball game was happening.

At least once the game started I could tune the announcers out and concentrate on the visuals. Before the game I am stuck watching Trae Young in a polo shirt, and it took them until tipoff to say he wasn't even going to play. WTH.

That would be (a) unwise (Caleb is a large gentleman) and (b) something any coach or veteran on their own side should take them aside and beat the snot out of them for. Laughing at the other side when you're 22 points down (even in SL) is a no-no.
Yep. Players who show respect will get no respect in the future.

With that said, I would trade Swanigan for Spellman 6 days a week, and 10 times on Sunday.

One of my biggest frustrations with our bigs is that they are aloud to do to0 much, (I include Aminu in that group)
Swanigan hustles his ass off. He is relentless on the boards. He plays physical. If he just concentrated on that he would be useful. Don't shoot, don't fucking dribble, just rebound and pass. If he does that then yes he can be a rotational player.
Because that's exactly what this Team needs, another big who can't shot or pass. Yeah mediocrity forever. Swanigan is a bust. Can't shot, can't pass, can't defend, is slow, is a turnover machine. The only nba skill he has is rebounding, no way he should play except garbage time

At the moment you are right, he probably will not make the rotation. I never liked the pick. I am just saying there are some things that are "fixable". We are talking about a role player who can rebound very well. Like Aminu he is a turnover machine when he dribbles, like Nurk he does try the "tough" pass too often. Those are correctable. i.e don't bring the ball up court, don't dribble in traffic, and don't force passes to players you just started playing with.

But he can rebound, he can pass, and he does have a mid range jump shot. He just is not showing it right now. We tend to write off a young player every summer...... and are eventually proven wrong.

I am disappointed in swanigan it like he just not motivated out there I hope for him. But also remember olshey saying he was better then vonleh last year at this time so what I got to say to him you need to eat your words because there know way. If olshey does do a trade then you need to add swanigan in that deal.

not saying much

Vonleh was and is still, much much better than Caleb. Vonleh actually played really well with Nurkic and he started in the NBA. Caleb unfortunately looks like he should be a bench player in the summer league.

I hope Caleb puts it together soon.

I agree that there is a place for him in the rotation to do what he does best and maybe no more. As you stated, rebound, pass and score when it makes sense. As bad as he has looked scoring, he has been very consistent on the defensive boards and helping on defense in general. In the second unit that should be fine.

Blazers Summer League guys who rank in a category:

Zach Collins: 2nd in blocks (3.3)
Wade Baldwin: 1st in assists (8.0)
Jake Layman: 18th in points (18.0)
Caleb Swanigan: 8th in rebounds (10.3)

Good to see everyone on the reg. season roster is doing well in their specialty

Collins' block number should be around at least 6 per game. I am supremely confident that he is going to be an elite defender in this league. He plays with so much composure and skill on defense. We just need to get him a coach who can help him develop on the offensive end.

Baldwin is 100% the reason why our team is doing so well. When he's on the floor we mop up. Our offense looks like an NBA offense. When he's off the floor and we have Goodwin or Trent or Simons trying to run the point, the game turns into ratball.

Layman has looked gooooood, but Neil pretty much put it all out there when he said, "Jake needs to make shots (next season."

Caleb has looked horrible. I don't think he's going to make the rotation next year. I'd rather see Meyers frankly.

Actually, he is a very good passer, albeit a turnover prone one. But that is fixable. In SL he average 4.0 assists/game which is more than the next FOUR players combined.

To amplify your point on Baldwin: he is +75 in 102 minutes of summer league play. (For every 20 minutes we play, we go up by 15 points).

Too bad they don't track plus/minus totals for summer league. I would guess Baldwin is at or near the top.

I can't give you +/- but I can give you other advanced stats.

https://basketball.realgm.com/player/Wade-Baldwin-IV/Summary/81056

Over the last 4 games he has a PER of 29.74.

He has an AST% of 50.71

He has a STL% of 3.06

He has a TS% of 58.3

He has a eFG% of 59.

He has a ORtg of 124.2

He has a DRtg of 86.2

The dude is balling out. Compare that to Lonzo Ball, who was such a great passer last year, but only had an AST% of 40.69.

Layman is also putting up crazy advanced stats in SL.

30.3 PER
71.9 TS%
70.2 eFG%

Thanks. Baldwin's normal stats don't jump out at you, but when you watch him in the game (and when he is out) it's pretty hard to find something you don't like--and his advance stats testify to it too. I loved his scoring/assist balance, he wan't turning the ball over (understatement), he pushed the ball when appropriate, his defense ranged from good to amazing, and the biggest compliment I can think of (as I said in an earlier thread) he took what should have been a summer league team and made it look like an NBA bench squad in mid-season. Coach gets a lot of credit for that too, but Baldwin was making it happen on the court.

I know it's just summer league in every way, but I would sooooooo love to see a Dame/Baldwin backcourt at some point. The intensity which they both play at could be amazing.

Man if we could find an idiot GM (there are a few) to take on Biggie, we could bring back Vonleh for the minimum.

And here's the problem with that...

It takes two teams to make a trade happen, and if Swanigan is as horrible as you say, what other team would want him? If your assessment of him is accurate, he has negative trade value and I can't see the point of sacrificing another asset (player, draft pick, etc.) just to move a guy making the min salary with only one year guaranteed left on his deal. It would make more sense to bury him on the end of the bench, or in the G League than to pay another team to take him off our hands.

This is so true. In most years our summer league games are painful to watch because there is no floor general. My expectations are very low because without a good pg in summer the other positions suffer on offense. Maybe one of the reasons why Jake has looked better? He is getting the ball at the right time and in the right place. Makes a huge difference for catch and shoot players.

Vonleh > Caleb

A little bit, but they are different players. Vonleh was much more athletic, but maybe lacked IQ. Caleb seems less athletic, but with a higher IQ. Last year, per 36 (small sample for Caleb)

Vonleh: 13/13/2/41/48 (pts/reb/asst/fg%/ft%)
Biggie: 12/10/3/40/67

Biggie is one year younger. All in all, I would rather have Vonleh too, but in a way it is swapping one set of issues for another.

Another interesting comparison for Baldwin

The last floor general that we had was Tim Frazier back in 2015-2016. That's when we had TRob and The People's Champ.
https://basketball.realgm.com/player/Tim-Frazier/Summary/3977

Frazier averaged 9.8 ppg, 7.5 assists, and 4 rebounds. He only shot 38% from the field and 17% from three.

Frazier had:

11.85 PER

44.5 TS%

40 eFG%

38.79 AST%

91.4 ORtg

104.4 DRtg

Baldwin is amazing. There is no freakin way we should be letting this kid go.
