Summer League takeaways - What We Learned

One thing that irked me in the Olshey interviews is that he never missed a chance to condescendingly bash and dismiss and disrespect summer league players. It was the fast talking Olshey version of "every one of these summer league guys suck turds that's why they're in summer league". I mean really, was that necessary? What a prick.
Yeah, the more I hear Olshey the less I like him. Trader Bob had many flaws but at least he kept his trap shut.

I learned that if you do something good in summer league it means something, but if you struggle it doesn't.

It's interesting...

I look at every poster on this forum as a balance of worth. Every poster has good posts and bad posts. Sometimes I agree with each poster, and sometimes I disagree with them, and I like that. I don't want to always agree with everyone, but I don't want to always disagree either. I just hope that every poster offers up opinions, actual opinions, about the Blazers and the NBA. What gets tiresome are the people who don't post much about the Blazers. They post about the forum. They troll. They try to be funny. Zero substance. Nothing of value. Nothing worth reading.

Sly rarely posts anything about the team. It's usually just him trying to be funny, and he can be funny, but I wish he would write about the team more.

Jlprk posts..... I don't even know what the hell he posts. It's usually nonsense and I just skip right over it.

And you post almost exclusively about the forum itself, which gets tiresome. You are consumed by the meta of this forum, which is of little value. Why should anyone read what you post? What worth does it have? In the end, we all come here to offer up opinions for others to consume. If nobody read or cared about what we wrote, we wouldn't come here. You should keep that in mind.

I learned biggie is a fucking beast whose shot is butter and his passing is smooth. Hes going to look good next to Nurk. Or even off the bench when Nurk is resting to keep the offense moving. I love how how he always heads to the rim on shots to get rebounds. Guy is a workhouse.

One thing about Trader Bob, he was very pleasant to talk to at the Rocky Mountain Review summer league in SLC. Some coaches and GM's are not as friendly, but Bob would always give me the time of day.

Mo Cheeks on the other hand was a prick to most fans IMO. Even if he did help the young singer with the National Anthem.

he could struggle in the minors in baseball for a decade....34 year old rookies pitch their debut games in baseball often....he's got plenty of time to try pitching but after a couple seasons with an NBA franchise....riding the bus in some small town in Alabama and staying in a motel 6 making less money than a schoolteacher.....he'd make a million bucks in Europe or China playing hoops....

It's actually pretty rare for a 34-year-old to make an MLB debut. I mean there are some guys who toil in the minors for ages, but most players quit or are released before reaching such a point. As well, the players that do last normally have at least AAAA talent which means that they've also likely played at some point in the Majors already.

That's interesting about Mo. I always found him to be a nice guy.... but I wasn't interacting with him as a fan. Maybe he was just nice to the media?

Olshey explicitly demeaned the importance of such an event, so the best you can do is say that about the fans. I'd also say Stotts toned down the hyperbole.

Dogs don't have opinions. They exist to amuse.

But otherwise, good post.

so the best you can do is say that about the fans

That's what he's talking about. MM has made it his personal crusade to educate us. He has taken it upon himself to keep us in check and remind us how we are too fanatical about our team.

Plus if there was one player who really set the tone for the team, it was him. Non-stop grit and grind and he was prepared to get nasty. We need someone like him with a real edge. Come on - surely he can be our Quarterman replacement?

But with guys like Quarterman you take them as projects you might become decent rotation players if they developp well and you get really lucky. I don't see the the point of having a 29yo 3rd stringer. Except if you're going for the garbage time championship

He has value from his example and as a practice player. And he would instantly be our very best backcourt defender.

In my view baseball pitching is the hardest rotation to crack in pro sports...and it carries a lot of stress with the job...Pat is young...he knows he can fall back on baseball later but you get only one shot at basketball usually when you're his age

Obvious: Caleb "Biggie" Swanigan has a nose for the ball. He also has a nice outside touch and can pass quite well for a big man. Concerns would be that he is not very explosive and doesn't finish well around the rim in traffic and doesn't seem to have that Zach-like ability to create space from the ground....yet. But there is no denying this kids work ethic and you have to like what you saw from him on a consistent basis.

Cont. concerns would his ability to guard the perimeter. An ever increasing demand for 4's in the league.

Let me rephrase it, I may have been too strong about Mo. Bob went out of his way to be friendly to Blazer fans and would talk about the young rookies. From sitting close to Cheeks I viewed him completely different. This was a small gym and fans were close. Not as bad as Bird who basically had security keeping fans away, but none the less went out of his way to ignore the fans. The expression on his face was never friendly and he made it clear to stay the fuck away. I never bothered him but sat close enough to watch him how he dealt with everyone. I guess my point was Bob was friendlier than most.

I watched the other summer league than you guys - I watched the one where everything was the same as in yours, except Spock had a beard and Jake Layman's defense stunk.

I wish Stokes could make the roster, he seems like he'd be a fan favorite if he made the team. But he won't.

barfo

We need to stack the 14th/15th roster spots with high upside guys. Montero didn't pan out but there was a glimmer of hope at least. Give me Cleveland.

And why the fuck doesn't PA have a G League team? Someone explain that to me. Can other teams poach your players so it doesn't really matter?

I kinda liked what the kings did with the no defense thing they employed with their g league team. I forget the details but it was like leave a guy back to cherry pick every possession or something.

With Swanigan's biggest weakness to his game being overall athleticism he really needs to prove it against the guys in the NBA for me to be a believer. There just aren't a lot of guys who are 6-8 and lack athleticism that make it very far in the NBA.

Now if we could morph his skill set with Noah Vonleh's physical profile I'd be getting excited.

With the caveat that I didn't watch the SL games, just some highlights, I'm in the same boat. I was lukewarm on him in the NCAA tourney because he looked to me like the typical dominant college guy who won't have the physical edge at the next level. SL isn't a higher level in that regard, so his Vegas successes haven't yet convinced me that he's as much of a sure thing as many here now believe. I am cautiously optimistic, though.

*C-Bo should be the starting PF from day one.

*Lonzo Ball is the real deal. I hate that LA has him. Game changing passer.

*Z. Collins showed that he has the awareness/tools to be an elite defensive force.

*Layman has the most diverse skillset of any SF on the roster.

*Alex Caruso would've been a great pickup. High IQ on both ends. Again, fuck the Lakers.

In the games I saw Layman absolutely sucked ass. He will probably make the team, but he shouldn't in my opinion.

That's good for you mm, you really did not get it for most of this summer league, and it did not matter, but now that you do - it does!

The play around the 2:30 mark is money! Passing to a cutter off the dribble? For a big man? Hell yeah!
Also that Gutierrez play around 3:30 where he broke some ankles and then set up two defenders for a mid-air collision while dumping it off for Biggie - loved it!

I was wondering who you were posting about, and then I realized I couldn't tell because I blocked him over a year ago. For the exact reason you specify.

He's actually the only poster I've ever blocked. There are more offensive or annoying posters out there. His shtick is just so predictably, condescendingly tedious. I'd rather just go look through my tax filings from last year than read a dozen of his posts. The IRS at least leaves out the condescension.

And now I'm doing the meta stuff too. *sigh* I guess it's contagious, which is another good reason to block.
