Orlando loses to Miami, but IND up on the Knicks by 4 with a minute to play.

No. A coin flip will determine odds. We have to lose
A coin flip wouldn't have even determined the odds, we would have had to split the odds in the lotto with the Magic and if neither team moved into the top 4 then a coin flip would have determined who picked before the other team.

Fortunately our team didn't leave anything to chance tonight.

Walker or Whitmore?
This is a great question.

Personally, I’d be bummed if we were at #5 and picked either guy over the Thompson twins, but ultimately, I’d be fine with either guy as a prospect for this team.

With Walker, I worry he won’t be able to be a consistently good defender on the perimeter. But the energy and interior defense would be sorely needed. If SAS wasn’t so bad this year, I wonder how a front court of Walker and Sochan would turn out defensively in a few years.

With Whitmore, I worry about the tunnel vision. That’s often harder to reel in than having a guy that needs to be more aggressive. However, he has an NBA ready physique, great athleticism, and won’t even turn 19 until after the draft. Defensively, he has no reason to not be great on that end.

Ultimately, I’d lean towards Whitmore.

You can call it whatever you want, but everybody in the NBA knows Portland is tanking. Saying a player is “injured” is a little game that the NBA commissioner should certainly be smart enough to figure out. The Mavericks can claim their players needed “rest” as easily as Portland can claim their players are injured, but again, the NBA commissioner should be smart enough to see through both ruses.

Process matters. Dallas didn't jump through the hoops any more than someone who takes a paid sick day and says they just didn't feel like it (yes, some places allow that, but the vast majority require people to at least pretend).

And, no, the NBA is not currently empowered to tell the Blazers and their players, "You aren't injured enough not to play. Nor are you. Nor are you. Nor are you. Nor are you." A player could definitely say they were healthy and that's one thing, but absent that, there's not much they have ever been able to do.

A "rest" designation, though, is clearly hogwash. The NBA can act more easily on that designation and (hopefully) punish the Mavericks.

AKA... we're trading anything outside of the #1 pick or we're trading Dame.

If he truly feels like this it scares me about Sharpe, also if we land Wemby there’s no chance in hell we trade him and the organization/fans are gonna have to settle for a Wemby/Sharpe era.

Wemby should be ready to win right away.

We're not contending next year or the year after regardless; I don't know what Dame expects from the braintrust.

If Sharpe is traded it better be for a Jaylen Brown or someone of that level. I’ll fucking puke if he’s sent out for anything less.

I wonder if Dame would block an Ant trade if they wanted to trade him instead of Sharpe.

He’s going back and forth. Which is it?

It’s okay if he doesn’t want to wait on guys that are 2 or 3 years away. Please demand the trade and be done with all this bother.

It’s better for both sides if he demands a trade anyway.

He's telling Cronin to make a win-now trade, not to trade him.

I think the assumption that Dame thinks that Shae is 2 or 3 years away might not be accurate after what he showed down the stretch of the season. I hope everyone knows that Dame needs a big guard next to him, that doesn't need to dominate the ball and plays defense... aka not Ant.

He's not going to demand a trade. I think if Cronin has another presser where he says he just couldn't get it done that Dame will speak with Jody about getting a different GM that will pull the trigger. That might get Dame traded but he will then say that the team chose to move on without him, not the other way around and this organization will look terrible.

I know he is. That’s not what’s best for the team. There isn’t a “win-now” kind of trade short of Embiid.

Trading multiple 1sts + maybe even Sharpe for a Siakam or OG is not a win-now move. That’s a “get back in the playoffs so my career can have a ‘I made the playoffs this many times’ legacy” kind of move.

That’s not the best move for the organization. He got compensated for being in this situation. Put up or move on.

I think he's saying "don't get projects". But it makes for a much more sexy headline to imply otherwise.

LOL at "settle" for "Wemby/Sharpe" era. I think most fans would be hugely excited about that! Sign me the fuck up!

I'd argue trading Dame isn't best for the team either. Not an ideal situation.

For those of you worried that we're going to trade Shae for a borderline all star instead of including Ant... if we are going to get a star player, we're going to have to include Ant's salary to make it work or I guess use Jerami in a sign and trade but that would be really risky.

I think if we land the first pick we'll keep Wemby and we'll trade Ant, Nurk and future firsts for a forward that complements what we would then have on the roster. I think if we land any pick besides the first pick that pick will be outgoing with Ant and Nurk and likely more picks to get the best player possible to be our second option.

Now we just get to wait and see.

He expects trades for seasoned star players. Which will happen before long.
Unfortunately, lately teams have been asking for and getting the moon for star players, with high draft picks becoming less valued then 5 or 10 years ago. This IMO is not the time to vastly overpay for someone, rather build thru the draft and trade or keep Dame depending on what he wants. I think it's better for both sides if he leaves, he gets a chance at a ring and Por gets a rebuild.

Pray for Wemby folks. That's all we can do from now

I don't know if it's smart to be in the mindset of him being "all" the team can do, because that sets us up for a lot of disappointment when reality hits and they drop in the draft.

I think anyone can be traded except Dame for the right players. Yes, even Sharpe (I dont want that but he's not going to be dominate on both ends for a few years). Simons, Nurk & Picks can be dealt and even Grant could be signed and traded.
it all depends on what players are available for trades.

I think you're substantively right... giving up chunks of the future won't make us a contender for anything other than HCA unless it's a remarkable, remarkable deal (like you allude to)).

I'm not sure that Dame agrees with us, even though it seems so obvious. I think that he really believed that Grant was an important addition, and I think that he thinks that another piece or two being swapped in will make a big difference.

But (again, as you allude to) who gives a fuck? What does Lillard know about building a championship-level team? LeBron James doesn't know anything about it, and he's won a lot of rings.

We're in a position where we care about the team's well-being after he retires. He doesn't have to give a shit about the team after he retires. Our priorities are very different. In this case I would tell Dame to try and understand that the franchise can't destroy itself for him (any more than it already has)
