I mean, he said if they can tear down "historical" Yankee Stadium, the Boston Garden, and Chicago Stadium to make way for future venues, then, certainly, the powers-that-be can raze the MC for the same purposes..............even if only for a state-of-the-art Triple A baseball stadium!

Sam Adams is a wuss.

Triple A baseball is a black hole.

It's going to cost A LOT of money to renovate this steaming pile of crap. The MC isn't even needed, either!

What could have been:

My grandfather's name is in the memorial wall at the MC. That being said... I am all for moving the memorial and tearing that POS down.

Exactly right. There's nothing special about the arena, it's small, it's dingy and ugly. I'm all for recycling and repurposing things, but this city's obsession over keeping everything is laughable.

You could probably even tear down everything around the memorial and build around it.

I'd like an entertainment district there. maybe something like the Nokia theatre....smaller venue entertainment center, cinemas, IMAX, restaurants, parks. seriously, we use that shit for what...hockey?

its not like its an icon of the Portland landscape.

I've always thought of tearing it down for a new MC for football/soccer. It would hold about 15,000 and PSU, UP, high schools, Timbers... could use it.

Portland Civic Leaders have no vision for sports, and haven't for... like ever. They don't see it as a priority, and the area keeps electing people who, bluntly, promote an eco-friendly, gay-friendly, ultra-liberal agenda that has more to do with bike paths and waterfront walkways than sports arenas.

"Saving" Memorial Coliseum has nothing to do with the sanctity of the memorial (which is a real argument) or the archtectural worth of the building (which is a canard). It has to do with stopping development.

The MC is an eyesore with little architecural value that should have been torn down when the RG was built.

Agreed. It's no longer a sports town.

When has it been?

Was it when the people voted not to build a stadium to bring the NFL to town?

Was it when MLB to Portland gained as much interest as a brothel with no women?

Was it when the NHL begged Paul Allen and the city of Portland to get a team and no one spoke up?

Was it when the AAA Beavers left the city on two other occasions?

Portland is he smallest minded large city in the country.

Truth, at least when it comes to sports. Light Rail? Euro-liberal community involvement? Biking paths? Portland is at the forefront.

I would be happy with moving the Timbers here, just because parking is awful. If they ever had an overlap though, that would be a nightmare! That said, I don't want another sport like baseball or football. I'm happy as it is. But definitely that space should be used for something. Maybe a 5 star hotel

Did a casino ever get discussed? Not that I'm a total proponent of it, but I am at least a bit intrigued.

Timbers should move out to the soccer field at Delta Park where the mexicans play or something and they should keep the Beavers playing at PGE Park.

Might not be a bad idea. It would bring in revenue and could afford to be a high class hotel. But i doubt it would ever, EVER fly.

okay, that is just racist. there reason why the beavers are leaving is because THEY DONT MAKE ANY MONEY!!! NOBODY LIKES TO WATCH THEM! the timers actually make money. Do you even live in portland man? I bet the Timbers army is twice as big as the regular attendance to a beavers game.

What if it meant bringing an NBA All-Star game to the Rose City?

I would be for it. But I don't think that the crunchy hipsters would be swayed by that.

How is that at all racist?

Because I don't like Soccer?

Civic Stadium was built for baseball. Its should be used as a baseball stadium, either Triple-A or Major League.

Soccer even at the highest level will always be a second rate sport.

BTW, raised in Portland, currently live in Vantucky.

It is racist because you said to move it by the mexicans. Assuming only mexicans like Soccer. Not hispanics, not white people, only mexicans. Because mexicans don't live in portland. Were these not implied assumptions?

Regardless of MLS vs MLB, we aren't talkign about that. We are talking about MLS vs Triple A baseball. And you are STILL completely ignoring the ticket sales. The city said they didn't want to prop up a nonprofitable activity, the beavers.

So how often do you go to Beavers games? How many people were at the last game you went to? How often do you check the scores of teh Beavers games?

Maybe I'm the only one here, but I'm happy not tearing it down until we know what to do with it.

Personally building a baseball stadium there was shot down and you would have to know MLB is coming in and do it right if you were doing that. To build soccer is a waste in that location. To build some entertainment district is insane because you're also wasting the potential sports space.

The reality is that like nearly a million people visit the site already because it is functional to have events like the Grand Floral parade, the X-game Dew Tour, the Monster Truck Rallies, the Winterhawks, the Disney on Ice, and the half dozen other events that can't quite fill the Rose Garden or want to come when the Rose Garden is already filled up with Blazers hogging it.

So the MC gets used and gets used often. I like the thought that they will save taxpayer dollars to just upgrade the items that would turn it from a POS to a comfortable 2nd choice venue to the Rose Garden (like new bathrooms, new seating structure and maybe a new concourse with new vendors, etc.). It could suddenly seem pretty nice in there with a quarter of the cost of tearing it down. Then when MLB is looking to come to town with some new, rich owner in 2020, we'll have a site right there on lightrail with no AAA team clogging the way. So as much as I'd like a shiny new building of something in that old hole, I think this is the best move for MLB or NHL hopefuls and the best move for the taxpayers. We just need to suck it up and look at the greater good for our children and the city as a whole after we're dead and gone.

That a real stretch.

All I said was that I always see Mexican's playing soccer on the field at Delta Park when I drive by.

Now I'm painted as a racist? riiiiiiight.

I'll drop the whole thing, if you'll admit that The Beavers are not as successful as the Timbers. And it makes sense to use the venue for the Timbers.

Soccer sucks though and the Timbers Army is obnoxious. They act like the Timbers are some European powerhouse soccer team and since they are an allegiance of fans they can act like assholes. But ya, they get more fans then the Beavs.

OMG... I understand why you hate them now... "allegiance of fans they can act like assholes." THEY ARE LAKER FANS IN DISGUISE! :ohno:
